COUNTESS
MAY 2011

Welcome to our 6th Season!
If your idea of great grand opera involved a heroine stabbing herself,
immolating herself, jumping off a building, or expiring from consumption,
you’re out of luck this season… although one of our leading ladies
(Cunegonde in Candide) does die multiple times.
Mercury Opera Rochester’s sixth season offers a much different operatic
experience. In the weekend’s production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s brilliant and
tuneful The Pirates of Penzance, no one will die, but the audience may
leave the theatre with sore tummies from laughing so hard!
No one had ever written an opera so perfectly as Mozart until Verdi wrote
his final masterpiece, Falstaff. No one has come even close to that
perfection since. Our production of Falstaff in January will be a feast for the
eyes and ears with a stellar cast from the great stages of the world, including
the Metropolitan Opera.
Leonard Bernstein’s ever popular Candide rounds out the season and is
bound to leave the audience humming and whistling its infectious tunes.
Our very successful new education program continues this year with another
of John Davies’ short children’s adaptations, Little Red’s Most Unusual
Day. The portable production will be touring to local elementary schools in
addition to its public performances in November.
Finally, our first artistic collaboration with Geva Theatre Center, Salieri’s
Kleine Harlekinade, has a few remaining performances before closing in
October.
We are very excited about this season, but we need your help to keep
Mercury Opera Rochester hale and hearty. Opera is all about passion –
extravagant love, patriotism, jealousy, and rage. We need YOU to be passionate
about supporting our endeavors to create a magical theatrical experience.
Your ticket price covers about half of the cost of a production. Please help us
make up the difference by donating generously. Thank you for joining us at the
opera and for your continuing support!
Synopsis
Act I:
England - February 29, 1879. Frederic has just completed his pirate apprenticeship and is being
hailed as a fully-fledged member of the gang. Unfortunately, Frederic must refuse; his apprenticeship
had been a mistake to begin with (his hard-of-hearing nurse, Ruth, had taken him to a “pirate”
rather than a “pilot”), and Frederic only stayed because he was duty-bound to do so. Now that he
is free, the young man feels morally obligated to hunt down and exterminate his former comrades.
The pirates are heartbroken, but understand Frederic’s predicament, and leave him on the beach
with Ruth. The middle-aged Ruth offers herself to Frederic; however, the sound of approaching
voices spells doom for Ruth’s plans - it is a bevy of beautiful maidens, who have come to the rocky
cove for a picnic. Frederic steps forward to ask if any of the maidens would stoop so low as to
accept the hand and heart of a pirate. Only one of them, Mabel, is ready to take him for what
he is. Of course, they fall in love at once. They are interrupted by the untimely return of the
pirate gang, who claim the girls for their own. Luckily for the girls, their guardian, Major-General
Stanley, has caught up with them. Although an open-minded man, the “very model of a modern
major-general” objects to pirates as sons-in-law. Fortunately the Major-General has heard of the
Penzance pirates before; they are notorious for their sympathy toward orphans (being orphans
themselves). He declares that he too is “an orphan boy,” and the tender-hearted pirates surrender
the girls and make the Major-General an honorary member of their band.
~ 15-Minute Intermission ~
Act II:
Weeping in the ancestral tomb of his (newly acquired) estate, Major-General Stanley is wracked
by guilt over his lie to the pirates. Frederic is to lead an expedition against the pirates, accompanied
by a squad of loyal (but rather timid) policemen. However, before he can depart on his
mission, the Pirate King and Ruth appear with a curious paradox: Frederic was apprenticed to
them until his 21st birthday – which is significant because, having been born in a Leap Year on
February 29th, he has technically had only five birthdays and thus is still a Pirate. Ever the slave of
duty, Frederic reluctantly agrees to return to the gang. He feels bound to reveal that the Major-
General is not, in fact, an orphan. The furious Pirate King vows a terrible vengeance and rushes off
with Ruth to prepare the attack. Frederic lingers to say a teary farewell to Mabel, who promises
to stay faithful. The policemen return in time to hide, for a series of roars and crashes herald the
pirates’ imminent “sneak attack.” Soon, Major-General Stanley, his daughters, and the policemen
are overcome and held at sword-point. The police sergeant calls upon the ruffians to surrender
in the name of the Queen. The command acts like magic. Loyally the pirates kneel to their captives,
for it transpires that they are all, in fact, noblemen who have gone wrong. Major-General
Stanley bids them rise and promises that if they return to their duties in the House of Lords, all
will be forgiven. Frederic and Mabel are re-united, and the pirates and other daughters pair off
for a very large wedding.
