Sandringham Yacht Club
Chairman’s Report
Since becoming Chairman of Sail
Melbourne in October 2009 I have
come to understand much more
about the importance of this event to
the international sailing community
and Australia, and its potential to
significantly raise the profile of sailing
in Victoria and create a genuinely
major Victorian event. I hope this
Annual Report to the member clubs
of Yachting Victoria provides some
insight into this perspective.
I would particularly like to thank
the members of the Sail Melbourne
Management Committee and the
staff of Yachting Victoria, and all the
volunteers from clubs throughout the
State who have worked so diligently in
the last few years to create the current
successful regatta and a strong vision
for its long term success.
We are very fortunate to have strong
support from both the Victorian
Major Events Company and the
Department of Sport and Recreation
Victoria in sharing our vision. Both
Parks Victoria and Bayside City
Council have endorsed the potential
for involvement of the entire sailing
and boating community and the local
community with their support.
I invite all Victorian Yacht Club
Officials and members to come and
appreciate more about this important
sailing event this year – December
13-19 at Sandringham Yacht Club.
Sail Melbourne Annual Report
to Yachting Victoria Member Clubs 2010
Event Development Manager Report
Sail Melbourne’s success since the early
1990’s as a sailing regatta earned its
selection as a round of the inaugural ISAF
Sailing World Cup for 2008-11. Together
with the completion of the fabulous
new Sandringham Yacht Club building,
Melbourne has the potential to develop
even further its international sailing profile
both on and off the water.
The Sail Melbourne development strategy
is based around three key platforms:
1. Increased regional profile within both
Asia Pacific and Oceania
2. Increased corporate sponsorship and
involvement with the regatta
3. Extensive community involvement.
We are fortunate to have the support
of the State Government until the 2011
event to deliver on the strategies that
underpin these objectives.
In 2009 we implemented:
• An Olympic Sailing Dinner attended
by 180 people
• A Community Participation Day offering
sailing and other water sports to the
community and kids in particular
• A Ladies Lunch attended by over 150
people in support of Ovarian Cancer
• A Presentation “Lifestyle Party”
• Several on water corporate sailing
activities.
We look forward to further development
over the next few months with the recent
signing of corporate involvement of
Deloitte, Club Marine, Pacific National,
Linfox, Audi, Bayside City Council,
Chambord, Jetstar, Melbourne Weekly
Bayside, Australian Sailing Magazine and
the Herald Sun.
Kate Allen
Regatta Coordinator and Committee
The Sail Melbourne Regatta Organising
Committee delivered another highly
successful regatta in 2009. The team
lead by Kevin and Ross Wilson, Bill Bell
and Vikki Moloney delivered three race
courses over six days that were enjoyed
by 365 sailors from 29 countries.
Over 10 yacht clubs from around the
state were represented in the Race
Management team that included 25
on water safety boats and over 120
on water race officials.
The ISAF Olympic Commission
In the last year ISAF commissioned a
report into the entire Olympic Sailing
strategy and YA CEO Phil Jones was
appointed to Chair the Commission.
ISAF deemed the commission necessary
because of the non strategic changes in
the Olympic Class selection (in particular
the omission of the catamaran), the
need to raise the media profile of sailing
(and in particular remove the confusion
of various “world championships”) and
secure the long term position of sailing
at the Olympic Games, which generates
around $500m per quadrennial cycle for
the sport globally.
The Commission tabled its draft report
in May and the overall strategy reinforces
the importance of events like Sail
Melbourne into the future. A summary
and the full report are available on the
ISAF website – www.isaf.org
The Sail Down Under Series
Sail Melbourne has worked with YA
and counterpart regattas in Sydney and
Brisbane to create the Sail Downunder
Series to increase the attractiveness of
a trip down under to international sailors.
The series provides Australian Olympic,
Youth and Junior sailors multiple
opportunities to compete with the
world’s best.
Dates for the series for the next 2 years are:
Event 2010 2011*
Sail Melbourne 12-18 Dec 13-19 Nov
Sail Sydney 6-9 Dec 6-9 Nov
Sail Brisbane 29 Nov-2 Dec 28-31 Oct
Perth World
Championships
16-21 Nov 3-18 Dec
*2011 event dates to be confirmed.
Perth 2011 World Championships
Melbourne sailors who experienced the
1999 Worlds will appreciate the scale of
this event in attracting international sailors
to Australia. The Perth event in December
2011 and its test event in November this
year will do the same, and Sail Melbourne
is working around the dates of these
events to attract visiting internationals to
Melbourne during their trip down under.
Sail Melbourne has secured sponsorship
support from major Australian transport
providers, Pacific National and Linfox in
freighting boats to Melbourne from Perth.
Yachting Victoria’s Sailing Pathway
Saturday 19 December
Sail Melbourne is a regatta that serves
the higher levels of the sailing pathway,
in particular those sailors who want to
compete above the club level and those
who aspire to the Victorian Development
Squad, the Victorian High Performance
Squad, the Australian Development
Squad and the Australian Sailing Team.
Of course Sandringham Yacht Club,
venue for Sail Melbourne, is the on water
venue for the Victorian Institute of Sport.
Unlike most other sports sailing presents
the opportunity for local sailors to
sail against the world’s best – same
race course, same start line and same
conditions. It’s unique!
Sail Melbourne extends this opportunity
to all international Youth and Junior
Classes to race with the world’s best in
the Olympic Classes. Invited classes to
Sail Melbourne include for Juniors the
Optimist and International Cadet and for
Youths the Bic 293 Windsurfer, Hobie 16,
29-er, 420 and Laser Radial and 4.7. It’s
a fantastic opportunity to see the higher
levels of the sailing pathway in action.
Sail Melbourne is also an inclusive event,
hosting the Paralympic Classes of the
2.4m and the Skud.
Volunteering – A Great Experience
The success of Sail Melbourne is largely
attributed to the endeavours of its
Volunteer Race Management Team.
Sail Melbourne provides the opportunity
to be involved with world class race
officials like Ross and Kevin Wilson,
Bill Bell, Graeme Watt and Garry Hosie.
If you would like to be part of this
fabulous experience you can register
on the Sail Melbourne website.
