POLICY STATEMENT:
Registered nurses shall implement the Hypoglycemia: Adult Management
Protocol where delay of patient treatment for a blood glucose—
less than 70 mg/dL or
60-100 mg/dL with symptoms
may cause harm to the patient, unless otherwise ordered by a physician. The
order for the protocol will be entered into medical record with order mode
“provider co-sign required”.
Medication orders will be entered with order mode “protocol/no co-sign/follow up”
with the attending physician. The attending physician will sign the order
electronically once aware of the orders.

The RN will document all blood glucose results and treatment per protocol in the
appropriate areas in medical record.
