Whether you have just rolled into town or have been feeling your way around for a little 

while, the 2009 Drayton Valley Family and Community Guide is your tool to get the 

scoop on useful information and various services that the Community has to offer. 

We have designed this guide a little differently this year as we have added housing 

information, by-laws, and other tips and hints for day to day needs. We hope you find it 

useful. It also contains listings for everything from health and wellness resources to 

recreational and social opportunities for families.

Rental accommodation is regulated by the provincial 

Residential Tenancies Act. The Act protects your rights 

as a Tenant as well as the rights of the Landlord. It is in 

your best interest to be informed about your obligations. It

Bylaws YOU should know about! 

Dog Bylaw (91-15) 

All dogs in Drayton Valley must be licenced and wearing a collar with a current licence 

at all times. Dogs must not be a public nuisance, this includes excessive barking and 

running at large. Don’t forget to clean up after your dog – scoop the poop! 

Noise Bylaw (92-12) 

Thinking of throwing a party? Think again! Playing loud music or creating noise that 

disturbs your neighbours or public at any time of the day could result in violation fees 

$$. 

Smoking Bylaw (2003/18/P) 

Drayton Valley is smoke free in all public places. This includes places of employment 

and enclosed patios. 

Snow/Mud Bylaw (2000-09) 

All sidewalks and parking areas, roadways are to be kept free and clean of snow, ice, 

slush, and mud. Do not shovel your snow onto the street, sidewalk, or alley. 

Untidy or Unsightly Bylaw (86-13) 

If you own a property in the town limits, you are responsible to keep it neat and tidy. 

Lawns and weeds must be dealt with on a continuous basis. There is to be no debris left 

in alleyways. Generally, properties are to be kept clean and tidy!

Seeking Employment 

Drayton Valley usually offers a high demand of 

employment in the oilfield and hospitality industries. 

While for the most part there is an abundance of work, 

things can slow down significantly in the oilfield business 

at various times of the year due to road bans, repairs 

and softening of the grounds. Try to plan for those slow 

times, have something lined up before those months 

approach. 

Even if you get a fantastic job in Drayton Valley right away, remember that your first 

paycheque may not arrive for at least two weeks after you start your new position. 

Preferably, come to Drayton Valley with enough money to last you at least one month 

while you look for a job and settle in.

Bike and car thefts unfortunately do happen in the best 

communities. If you have a cool ride, get it insured, 

pronto! Always lock your doors, chain-up your bike, and 

never leave your vehicle running with the keys in the 

ignition. It is also a good idea to have rental insurance.

Garbage & Recycling 

The Town of Drayton Valley is very serious about recycling. We are working hard to 

reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. Through innovative recycling programs 

and good organics management, Drayton Valley could be a leader in protecting the 

natural beauty of our community. 

A successful recycling program is a team effort. Residents are encouraged to make a 

decision to reduce, reuse, and recycle before garbage is taken out. The Town will then 

collect the recyclables and deliver them to a processor who can turn them into highquality 

raw materials. 

The Aspen Waste Management Facility Site (landfill) is situated northwest of the Town of 

Drayton Valley. The Aspen Waste Management Facility is closed on Christmas Day, 

Boxing Day, New Years Day and Easter Sunday. The hours of operation are below.

Blue Bag Recycling 

Recycling Tips 

Here are some tips to make your recycling efforts most effective. 

Tin Cans do not have to be flattened, and the labels can stay on. 

Aluminum cans do not have to be flattened, and the labels can stay on. 

Clear or coloured glass food containers are acceptable. Coloured glass mixed 

with clear tableware, cookware and light bulbs, lids or attachments, dirty 

containers, and ceramic materials are not acceptable 

Newspapers must be clean, dry, and uncontaminated. Envelopes, flyers, boxboard, 

and magazines are acceptable. Wet or dirty paper products are not acceptable. 

Corrugated Cardboard must be flattened, clean, dry, and uncontaminated. 

Boxboard, pop cases, pizza, and cereal boxes are acceptable. Styrofoam is not 

acceptable. Heavily taped or stapled packing material is not acceptable. Wet, dirty, 

or oily cardboard is not acceptable. 

All mixed paper, except shredded paper, can go in blue bags. Shredded paper 

should be in a separate blue bag and taken to the depot. It is not acceptable with 

other materials or door-to-door pick up. 

Clean Plastic Grocery Bags are acceptable. Place bags inside the blue bag. 

Rigid Plastic - Only No. 1 and 2 clean plastic containers are acceptable. 

Clear white plastic milk jugs must be well rinsed. Please remove lids and flatten 

as much as possible. Lids and caps or any other types of plastic leftover milk 

containers are not acceptable. 

Milk Cartons must be well rinsed and flattened as much as possible. Leftover milk 

is not acceptable.

Know Your Rights 

Bullying - is a conscious, wilful, deliberate, and repeated hostile activity marked by 

an imbalance of power, intent to harm, and/or a threat of aggression. When bullying 

escalates unabated, it may lead to a feeling of terror on the part of the individual 

being bullied. Remember being bullied is not your fault, and there is nothing wrong 

with you – no one deserves to be bullied. 

Family Violence - is the abuse of power within relationships of family, trust or 

dependency that endangers the survival security or well-being of another person. It 

can include many forms of abuse including spousal abuse, senior abuse and 

neglect, child abuse, parent abuse, and witnessing abuse of others in the family. 

Harassment - is a form of discrimination and it is against the law. Harassment 

occurs when someone is verbally or physically treated differently from other people 

based on his or her sex, religion, nationality, race, colour, physical or mental 

disability, age, marital status or sexual orientation. 

Sexual Harassment - can be unwanted sexual advances or suggestions, 

threats, jokes, acts of revenge after you have rejected suggestions, or any unwanted 

sexual attention. All forms of harassment are against the law in Alberta. 

How can you get help? 

• Tell someone you trust you are being bullied, or someone else is.

• Inform the harasser that the behaviour is unwanted and ask them to stop. This

• If they refuse to stop be sure to inform a supervisor or someone who can help. 

• Keep a copy of any correspondence between you and the harasser. 

• Record incidents of harassment (include date, time, witnesses). 

• Be certain the allegations you make are accurate. 

• Contact the Alberta Human Rights commission and file a formal complaint

Meeting new people and having a good time? Enjoying the 

night life in town can sometime result in exposure to alcohol 

and other drugs. At times it can be easy to get a little 

carried away and wind up having an experience you would 

rather forget…so if you are going to party, party smart.

• Stay with people you know and trust 

• Do not leave your drink unattended while at a bar or party where there are 

people you do not know

Alcohol 

The most readily available drug in today’s society is alcohol. Although alcohol is legal, 

there are still risks associated with it. Alcohol is often thought of as a stimulant, because 

it lowers inhibitions, which could mean you may take chances you would not otherwise 

take. However, alcohol actually acts as a depressant on your central nervous system, 

slowing down brain functioning. So after that initial false sense of self-confidence and 

wit, you may end up feeling not so cool and potentially quite depressed. Alcohol also 

remains the most common facilitator of sexual assaults. Binge drinking (in excess of 5 

drinks) puts individuals at higher risk for all crimes including sexual assault. 

Remember, you know yourself best. Treat yourself with care and respect and make 

informed choices. 

Marijuana 

Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in Canada and our community is no 

exception. Marijuana is not as ‘harmless’ as it was 25 years ago. THC content 

(psychoactive potency) in Marijuana cigarettes has increased significantly. For instance, 

in the 80’s content of THC was at 3%, increasing to 38% in the year 2000. 

• Marijuana is illegal 

• It does impair your judgment 

• An average joint contains more tar than a cigarette.

Ecstacy, Ketamine, Crystal Meth and other synthetic drugs have made their way to our 

community. In order to make informed choices you should know… 

• Addictions, especially to meth, are common, and related crimes are on the rise 

• Illegal drugs are not regulated (you never know for sure what you are getting) 

• Mixing these drugs with others can result in dangerous chemical reactions in 

your body, potentially resulting in death. 

• These drugs effect the body’s ability to regulate hydration possibly leading to death.
