We have designed this guide a little differently this year as we have added housing
information, by-laws, and other tips and hints for day to day needs. We hope you find it
useful. It also contains listings for everything from health and wellness resources to
recreational and social opportunities for seniors. This data has been obtained primarily
from information submitted by each organization. The listing of the agency does not
necessarily constitute endorsement of its purpose, method, or quality of service. This is
only a guide to services available.
FCSS recognizes that from time to time there will be changes to agency information and
we will make every effort to keep the information current. Please let us know if you

Yellowhead County reaches from the Jasper Park gates to the Pembina River. Through a
cost-sharing agreement with Parkland County, FCSS services are also provided to the
west end of Parkland County, including Entwistle, Fallis, and the Seba Beach area.

Act. The Act protects your rights as a
Tenant as well as the rights of the Landlord.
It is in your best interest to be

The Brazeau Seniors Foundation provides supportive housing options to members of our
communities.
Shangri-La Lodge – 5208-47 Avenue, Drayton Valley
The Lodge provides seniors with an opportunity to live safely in their community,
maintaining their independence while providing services like cooking, cleaning,
and added security. Go out and spend your time & energy doing things you like
to do, leave the cooking and cleaning to us!
Seniors Self-Contained Apartments

The Senior Apartments are provincially owned and are rent geared to income.
(30% of your gross monthly income = Rent)
Community Housing and Designated Rent Supplement Program
These programs are aimed to provide rental accommodation to those
applicants who meet the criteria.
The Community Housing Program has only 4 units and rent is based on
30% of the gross income.
The Designated Rent Supplement Program provides approved applicants
with a monthly subsidy of their current accommodation.
The Urban Housing Program
The Urban Housing Program is designed to provide affordable rent for a limited
three year period. This is considered a step up program where priority is given
to working families who are goal orientated with a regular work history. The
program encourages enrolment in the ‘Making Financial Cents’ sessions offered
through FCSS by the Town of Drayton Valley. The goal is to assist families and
individuals to eventually be in a position to purchase a home of their own by
providing affordable rent and financial knowledge.

All programs have an application that must be completed. Incomplete documentation will
not be considered. Upon completion of all documentation the applicant is interviewed
and processed as appropriate.

Bylaws YOU should know about!
Dog Bylaw (91-15)
All dogs in Drayton Valley must be licenced and wearing a collar with a current licence
at all times. Dogs must not be a public nuisance, this includes excessive barking and
running at large. Don’t forget to clean up after your dog – scoop the poop!
Smoking Bylaw (2003/18/P)
Drayton Valley is smoke free in all public places. This includes places of employment
and enclosed patios.
Snow/Mud Bylaw (2000-09)
All sidewalks and parking areas, roadways are to be kept free and clean of snow, ice,
slush, and mud. Do not shovel your snow onto the street, sidewalk, or alley.
Untidy or Unsightly Bylaw (86-13)
If you own a property in the town limits, you are responsible to keep it neat and tidy.
Lawns and weeds must be dealt with on a continuous basis. There is to be no debris left
in alleyways. Generally, properties are to be kept clean and tidy!

Garbage & Recycling
The Town of Drayton Valley is very serious about
recycling. We are working hard to reduce the
amount of waste going to landfills. Through
innovative recycling programs and good organics
management, Drayton Valley could be a leader in
protecting the natural beauty of our community.
A successful recycling program is a team effort.
Residents are encouraged to make a decision to reduce, reuse, and recycle before
garbage is taken out. The Town will then collect the recyclables and deliver them to a
processor who can turn them into high-quality raw materials.
The Aspen Waste Management Facility Site (landfill) is situated northwest of the Town of
Drayton Valley. The Aspen Waste Management Facility is closed on Christmas Day,
Boxing Day, New Years Day, and Easter Sunday. The hours of operation are below.

Blue Bag Recycling
Recycling Tips
Here are some tips to make your recycling efforts most effective.
Tin Cans do not have to be flattened, and the labels can stay on.
Aluminum do not have to be flattened, and the labels can stay on.
Glass- clear or coloured glass food containers are acceptable. Coloured glass
mixed with clear tableware, cookware and light bulbs, lids or attachments, dirty
containers, and ceramic materials are not acceptable
Newspapers must be clean, dry and uncontaminated. Envelopes, flyers,
boxboard, and magazines are acceptable. Wet or dirty paper products are not
acceptable.
Corrugated Cardboard must be flattened, clean, dry, and uncontaminated.
Boxboard, pop cases, pizza, and cereal boxes are acceptable. Styrofoam is not
acceptable. Heavily taped or stapled packing material is not acceptable. Wet,
dirty, or oily cardboard is not acceptable.
Mixed Paper All mixed paper, except shredded paper, can go in blue bags.
Shredded paper should be in a separate blue bag and taken to the depot. It is
not acceptable with other materials or door-to-door pick up.
Clean Plastic Grocery Bags are acceptable. Place bags inside the blue bag.
Rigid Plastic - Only No. 1 and 2 clean plastic containers are acceptable.
Plastic Milk Jugs Clear white plastic jugs must be well rinsed. Please remove lids
and flatten as much as possible. Lids and caps or any other types of plastic
leftover milk containers are not acceptable.
Milk Cartons must be well rinsed and flattened as much as possible. Leftover
milk is not acceptable.

We all know how important it is to eat right but that doesn’t make it easy to do –
especially if you are on a fixed income or have disabilities that hinder your ability to
cook. If you are finding it difficult to eat healthy, the following agencies are here to help.

Meals on Wheels is a volunteer driven project that delivers meals to those who are
unable to cook for themselves. Noon meals are available Monday – Friday. Deliveries

This volunteer driven service is coordinated through Drayton Valley
and District FCSS. If you are a senior who is unable to shovel your
paths and sidewalks clear from snow, please contact FCSS and we
will strive to match you with a volunteer.

earners during Federal Tax season. Please contact FCSS to find out if you qualify or for

Know Your Rights
Elder Abuse
Elder abuse is any deliberate action or lack of action which causes harm to an elderly
person. It can take many forms, including:
Physical Abuse - includes any kind of physical assault, such as slapping, pushing,
kicking, punching, or injuring with an object or weapon. It also includes deliberate
exposure to severe weather, inappropriate use of medication, and unnecessary
physical restraint.
Sexual Abuse - unwanted sexual advances or suggestions, threats, jokes, acts of
revenge after you have rejected suggestions, or any unwanted sexual attention. All
forms of abuse are against the law in Alberta.
Psychological Abuse - includes humiliation, isolation, intimidation, threats, and
inappropriate control of activities. Removal of decision making power when the
elderly person is still competent to make his/her own decision is also considered
to be psychological abuse.
Financial Abuse - includes the misuse of the elderly person’s funds or property through
fraud, trickery or force.
Neglect - is any lack of action required to meet the needs of an elderly person. It
includes inadequate provision of food, clothing, shelter, required medication or
other kinds of health and personal care, as well as social companionship.
How can you get help?
• Tell someone you trust you are being abused, or someone else is.
• Call the Family Violence Info Line 310-1818
• Contact the RCMP 780-542-4456
• Inform the abuser that the behaviour is unwanted and ask them to stop. This can
be done verbally or in writing.
• Keep a copy of any correspondence between you and the harasser.
• Record incidents of harassment (include date, time, witnesses).
• Be certain the allegations you make are accurate.
• Contact the Alberta Human Rights commission and file a formal complaint (310-
0000, then 780-427-7661).

witnesses. Information and referrals are provided to community residents who are

In the spirit of keeping healthy and active, FCSS is offering the ongoing Seniors’
Wellness Program to all residents of Drayton Valley, Tomahawk, and Brazeau County,
ages 55 and up.
The Seniors’ Wellness Program is committed to removing barriers and enabling seniors
to have access to existing wellness programs in Drayton Valley and area, as well as
providing additional programming to encourage participation, education, and to reduce
isolation.

Participants are required to register through FCSS in order to access the activities and
are given an identification card as well as a comprehensive outline listing all activities
that will be offered. Members are also kept advised of upcoming events and services
through the Seniors Wellness Brochure that is mailed out throughout the year.
