This directory is dedicated to listing the various community services available for seniors<br />
in <strong>and</strong> around <strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>.<br />
We have designed this guide a little differently this year as we have added housing<br />
information, by-laws, <strong>and</strong> other tips <strong>and</strong> hints for day to day needs. We hope you find it<br />
useful. It also contains listings for everything from health <strong>and</strong> wellness resources to<br />
recreational <strong>and</strong> social opportunities for seniors. This data has been obtained primarily<br />
from information submitted by each organization. The listing <strong>of</strong> the agency does not<br />
necessarily constitute endorsement <strong>of</strong> its purpose, method, or quality <strong>of</strong> service. This is<br />
only a guide to services available.<br />

Yellowhead County reaches from the Jasper Park gates to the Pembina River. Through a<br />
cost-sharing agreement with Parkl<strong>and</strong> County, FCSS services are also provided to the<br />
west end <strong>of</strong> Parkl<strong>and</strong> County, including Entwistle, Fallis, <strong>and</strong> the Seba Beach area.<br />

accommodation is regulated<br />
by the provincial Residential Tenancies<br />
Act. The Act protects your rights as a<br />
Tenant as well as the rights <strong>of</strong> the L<strong>and</strong>lord.<br />
It is in your best interest to be<br />

The Lodge provides seniors with an opportunity to live safely in their community,<br />
maintaining their independence while providing services like cooking, cleaning,<br />
<strong>and</strong> added security. Go out <strong>and</strong> spend your time & energy doing things you like<br />
to do, leave the cooking <strong>and</strong> cleaning to us!<br />
Seniors Self-Contained Apartments<br />

The Senior Apartments are provincially owned <strong>and</strong> are rent geared to income.<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Housing <strong>and</strong> Designated Rent Supplement Program<br />
These programs are aimed to provide rental accommodation to those<br />
applicants who meet the criteria.<br />
The <strong>Community</strong> Housing Program has only 4 units <strong>and</strong> rent is based on<br />
30% <strong>of</strong> the gross income.<br />
The Designated Rent Supplement Program provides approved applicants<br />
with a monthly subsidy <strong>of</strong> their current accommodation.<br />
The Urban Housing Program<br />
The Urban Housing Program is designed to provide affordable rent for a limited<br />
three year period. This is considered a step up program where priority is given<br />
to working families who are goal orientated with a regular work history. The<br />
program encourages enrolment in the ‘Making Financial Cents’ sessions <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
through FCSS by the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>. The goal is to assist families <strong>and</strong><br />
individuals to eventually be in a position to purchase a home <strong>of</strong> their own by<br />
providing affordable rent <strong>and</strong> financial knowledge.<br />

All programs have an application that must be completed. Incomplete documentation will<br />
not be considered. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> all documentation the applicant is interviewed<br />
<strong>and</strong> processed as appropriate.<br />

Bylaws YOU should know about!<br />
Dog Bylaw (91-15)<br />
All dogs in <strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> must be licenced <strong>and</strong> wearing a collar with a current licence<br />
at all times. Dogs must not be a public nuisance, this includes excessive barking <strong>and</strong><br />
running at large. Don’t forget to clean up after your dog – scoop the poop!<br />
Smoking Bylaw (2003/18/P)<br />
<strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> is smoke free in all public places. This includes places <strong>of</strong> employment<br />
<strong>and</strong> enclosed patios.<br />
Snow/Mud Bylaw (2000-09)<br />
All sidewalks <strong>and</strong> parking areas, roadways are to be kept free <strong>and</strong> clean <strong>of</strong> snow, ice,<br />
slush, <strong>and</strong> mud. Do not shovel your snow onto the street, sidewalk, or alley.<br />
Untidy or Unsightly Bylaw (86-13)<br />
If you own a property in the town limits, you are responsible to keep it neat <strong>and</strong> tidy.<br />
Lawns <strong>and</strong> weeds must be dealt with on a continuous basis. There is to be no debris left<br />
in alleyways. Generally, properties are to be kept clean <strong>and</strong> tidy!<br />

Garbage & Recycling<br />
The <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> is very serious about<br />
recycling. We are working hard to reduce the<br />
amount <strong>of</strong> waste going to l<strong>and</strong>fills. Through<br />
innovative recycling programs <strong>and</strong> good organics<br />
management, <strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> could be a leader in<br />
protecting the natural beauty <strong>of</strong> our community.<br />
A successful recycling program is a team effort.<br />
Residents are encouraged to make a decision to reduce, reuse, <strong>and</strong> recycle before<br />
garbage is taken out. The <strong>Town</strong> will then collect the recyclables <strong>and</strong> deliver them to a<br />
processor who can turn them into high-quality raw materials.<br />
The Aspen Waste Management Facility Site (l<strong>and</strong>fill) is situated northwest <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Drayton</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>. The Aspen Waste Management Facility is closed on Christmas Day,<br />

Blue Bag Recycling<br />
Recycling Tips<br />
Here are some tips to make your recycling efforts most effective.<br />
Tin Cans do not have to be flattened, <strong>and</strong> the labels can stay on.<br />
Aluminum do not have to be flattened, <strong>and</strong> the labels can stay on.<br />
Glass- clear or coloured glass food containers are acceptable. Coloured glass<br />
mixed with clear tableware, cookware <strong>and</strong> light bulbs, lids or attachments, dirty<br />
containers, <strong>and</strong> ceramic materials are not acceptable<br />
Newspapers must be clean, dry <strong>and</strong> uncontaminated. Envelopes, flyers,<br />
boxboard, <strong>and</strong> magazines are acceptable. Wet or dirty paper products are not<br />
acceptable.<br />
Corrugated Cardboard must be flattened, clean, dry, <strong>and</strong> uncontaminated.<br />
Boxboard, pop cases, pizza, <strong>and</strong> cereal boxes are acceptable. Styr<strong>of</strong>oam is not<br />
acceptable. Heavily taped or stapled packing material is not acceptable. Wet,<br />

Mixed Paper All mixed paper, except shredded paper, can go in blue bags.<br />

Know Your Rights<br />
Elder Abuse<br />
Elder abuse is any deliberate action or lack <strong>of</strong> action which causes harm to an elderly<br />
person. It can take many forms, including:<br />
Physical Abuse - includes any kind <strong>of</strong> physical assault, such as slapping, pushing,<br />
kicking, punching, or injuring with an object or weapon. It also includes deliberate<br />
exposure to severe weather, inappropriate use <strong>of</strong> medication, <strong>and</strong> unnecessary<br />
physical restraint.<br />
Sexual Abuse - unwanted sexual advances or suggestions, threats, jokes, acts <strong>of</strong><br />
revenge after you have rejected suggestions, or any unwanted sexual attention. All<br />
forms <strong>of</strong> abuse are against the law in Alberta.<br />
Psychological Abuse - includes humiliation, isolation, intimidation, threats, <strong>and</strong><br />
inappropriate control <strong>of</strong> activities. Removal <strong>of</strong> decision making power when the<br />
elderly person is still competent to make his/her own decision is also considered<br />
to be psychological abuse.<br />
Financial Abuse - includes the misuse <strong>of</strong> the elderly person’s funds or property through<br />
fraud, trickery or force.<br />
Neglect - is any lack <strong>of</strong> action required to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> an elderly person. It<br />
includes inadequate provision <strong>of</strong> food, clothing, shelter, required medication or<br />
other kinds <strong>of</strong> health <strong>and</strong> personal care, as well as social companionship.<br />
How can you get help?<br />
• Tell someone you trust you are being abused, or someone else is.<br />
• Call the <strong>Family</strong> Violence Info Line 310-1818<br />

• Inform the abuser that the behaviour is unwanted <strong>and</strong> ask them to stop. This can<br />
