Gardening On The Edge with Heather Laidlaw All Booked Up! by Bethany Buck GLP NEWS Page 6 Nibbling on the Wild Side Iʼve tried for years to establish fruit in the garden, but with the exception of Figgy, the Noank Firehouse fig, my plans have not come to fruition. The blueberry was finicky about soil pH, the juneberry did not appreciate the wind, and the dwarf cherry, obstructing the sacrosanct view, was promptly deported. Domestic fruit production demands constant maintenance and years of patience. But my fruit experiments have made me more conscious of natureʼs bounty. After seeing them in a catalog, I started some wonderberries from seed one year. That summer, I went to California and saw them everywhere. Then I returned, and found them on local roadsides, too! I recently identified an elderberry that I must have passed a thousand times, after buying and planting a couple last year. Maybe not enough to feed 15 houseguests or turn out a decent batch of jam, unless you devote your life to it, but more than enough for snacking as you walk and an occasional family dessert. Wild fruits are often exponentially higher in antioxidants than their domestic cousins, so a little goes a long way. They also tend to be sourer and seedier. Before disclosing a couple of hot spots, first let me disclaim. Donʼt eat anything you canʼt positively identify as safe and edible! Deadly nightshade grows among the brambles, poison ivy abounds. Thereʼs a strange concentration of foraging fruit on Duryea Drive. Itʼs flanked with a bumper crop of ripe wine berries now, with some blackberries mixed in. Chokecherries and elderberries hang overhead, still green. Wild grapes and wild mint can be found in the area, and autumn olives not far off. Another foraging area of note is the Joe Devine Riviera, full of beach plums. It looks like a good crop is ripening this year. A lovely and poetic picture book about a boy and his dog on a quest for a whale, this book is about the power of imagination and patience. It's a book that can be enjoyed by all ages, and a wonderful addition to your 'seaside' book collection. "Matilda" the musical won four Tony awards this year, so now's a good time to revisit the modern classic book by Roald Dahl. Matilda is the story of an extraordinary girl who triumphs in spite of her difficult parents. It's both funny and wicked. There's a great middlegrade fantasy series out now called The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann. Music for Newtown by Leah Deceasare Moved by the horrors in Newtown, Connecticut, our hometown, my sister, Beth Bogdan, launched Music for Newtown. She is the Senior Director of Artist Relations for Republic Records who sponsored the online auction in March 2013. After December 14, Beth, like so many who called Newtown home, felt drawn, and returned to Newtown. There was an incredible, immediate outpouring from people wanting to help, but the needs continue. Many of the affected families are out of work and struggling financially. Resources are needed for ongoing counseling services and eventually for building a new school. The United Way of Western Connecticut waived their administration fee so all proceeds directly benefited Newtown needs through the Sandy Hook School Support Fund. Artists who supported Music for Newtown included Elton John, Tim McGraw, The Eagles, Eddie Vedder, John Mayer, Lisa Marie Presley, One Direction, Taylor Swift and Rush. Others who donated were Five for Fighting, 3 Doors Down, Colbie Caillat, Florence and the Machine, Of Monsters and Men and the list goes on. www.cinderellascc.com Seven autographed guitars were up for bidding and Jack Johnson donated a ukelele handmade in Hawaii valued at $600.00 before it was signed by him; it sold for $2800. A signed Eddie Vedder tour poster pulled in $1,800 and the top grossing item was a bass signed by the members of Blink 182 which sold for $8,000. Beth pulled this off while working a full time job and nearly single-handedly conceiving, planning, promoting and executing the auction in only three months. The auction raised nearly $36,000. A Special Report by Our Intrepid Reporter and Professional Body Builder, John Huss The biggest event on the GLP Menʼs Golf Calendar is about to have a fresh look promises Tom Sullivan, newly named CEO of the prestigious GLP Open. This annual event, which serves as the Gala Curtain Closer to the summer season of Menʼs Golf on the Point will be held on Monday, August 26 at the challenging, tick-infested Richmond Country Club in Rhode Island. Tom “Smiley” OʼSullivan is the perfect choice to assume command of this important tournament, taking the reins from long-time event coordinator and public servant Stearns Martin. Tom, who has never had a bad day in his life (probably because he is lucky enough to be married to the perky and personable Candy), plans to institute some new wrinkles to the 18-Hole Scrambles event. First, “O”Sullivan is giving the Open an Irish Theme. On the course, the beverage cart will offer Green Beer and Baileyʼs Whiskey. The traditional logoed baseball caps will be replaced with sporty little Tam OʼShanters. And Leprechauns will be placed strategically throughout the course to throw errant golf balls back into the fairway. David Cruthers has once again generously offered his Weston Point property as the site of always popular Post Tourney Party and Awards Ceremony. But once there, you can expect some exciting new wrinkles! How about this… the First-Ever GLP Irish Step Dancing Contest! The following Sons of Erin have already committed to perform: Jack “O” Foley, Tom “O”Dolan, Bob and Danny “O”Murphy and the “O” Kellehers, father and son. This will be followed by a lovely rendition of Danny Boy, sung by world acclaimed tenor John “O”McGee. And finally, the traditional menu of grilled shrimp and kielbasa will be supplemented with corn beef and cabbage, a hearty stew, and a dram or two of Irish Coffee. The origin of the GLP Open goes back many, many years, pre-dating even Stearns Martin! According to one old timer (requesting anonymity for fear the Groton Assessors will discover he does in fact have a water view) there was once a small nine-hole course on the Point itself! The first tee was in the circle of Clubhouse Point, and the course criss-crossed the Point south of where the Casino is today. The lagoon was of course a real hazard, as were the few cottages then in existence. Our source recalls that owners generously kept their windows open (mosquitoes hadn't been invented yet) during the golfing season to help players who might otherwise be stymied. On Labor Day, a season-ending tournament was played with the winner receiving a handsome Sterling silver trophy. A quaint tradition in those days was to then throw the winner and his trophy off the end of the South Beach Dock! This is a tradition Tom “O”Sullivan might consider reviving for the upcoming 2013 edition of the famous GLP OPEN! See you all there!
