Our July people already know this but we thought our August people would like to know that “Our new neighbor, sort of” is Her Eminence, Taylor Swift, who has recently bought a house on Watch Hill in Rhode Island for the mere price of 17.7 million, thatʼs dollars, folks! Taylor and her pal, Her Wonderfulness, Selena Gomez, were seen at The Bridge Ice Cream store in Mystic. Now donʼt you wish you were here in July?..... Moving on... News from the South Shore Murphyʼs. Billy will be up from Atlanta on vacation from his job at SunTrust for the first week in August-- hopes to help out with the Jr. Sailing Regatta and connect with GLP friends. Right after that, Mollie is heading off to London to begin a teaching job at the International Community School. She is moving on from her position at Girls Prep Charter School in the Bronx. She actually postponed her flight so that she could see Billy before she leaves, although everyone is looking forward to visiting her in the Our new neighbor, sort of! UK....... Thursday Pasta Night was so successful last week and so much fun! We took a lot of pictures and promise to get them into the paper next week. But we had so much going on this week that we had to cover. At Pasta Night we promised the Palominoʼs that they would get into the paper because they have never been in before and they will be in - just not this week.... Sally and John Huss are usually at all the tennis finals and we thought weʼd see them at the Menʼs Singles finals. Sally likes to enjoy a cold Coke while she watches and her nephew, Charlie Newell, was playing in the finals. But, we were informed, Sally and Johnʼs son, Robbie, and his wife, Carroll, had just had a little baby girl named Adele Anne who weighed in at 9 pounds. So, John and Sally went home to meet her. Weʼre sorry we missed seeing you at tennis but we understand! Luise Bethencourt - Editor Redluisey@gmail.com cell 914 409-6869 SERVING GLP FOR OVER 40 YEARS B & H BUGBEE PLUMBING & HEATING Call 572-0274 KEITH BRIDGHAM JOHN HOLGREM East Dock Danger Advisory In the past, our community has experienced a few frightening incidents requiring rescue off East Dock, known to some as “Big Dock.” While many of us love the thrill of leaping off the dock or playing a spirited game of matchstick, it is absolutely vital that all residents, their children, their renters, and their guests be aware of the real danger of swimming off East Dock. The current that flows past the dock can move extremely quickly, and can even endanger the lives of experienced swimmers, by sweeping people out towards the sound and exhausting their attempts to return to the dock. Young children, even those who can swim, should NEVER swim off the dock, and should instead swim at one of the Pointʼs lovely beaches. Even older children and adults who can swim should not swim off East Dock unless they are truly strong swimmers. This would tire you out. Instead, swim at an angle to the shore. If thatʼs not possible, float on your back until the pull of the current lessens, and then swim diagonally to shore. Anyone who chooses to swim off the dock does so at his or her own risk, but as a community we obviously want to encourage people to make safe choices regarding swimming here at the Point. We do post warning signs and provide life rings. However, no measure replaces the power of good judgment, parental supervision, and open communication with guests and renters to ensure that all people enjoying summers at Groton Long Point make the best choices for the safety of themselves and their families. In the issue of August 6, 1982, he humbly apologizes: “A number of things of considerable importance have escaped the keen eye and ear of our reporter. (If he had two of each perhaps this wouldnʼt happen.) … The prestigious Commodoreʼs Cup Race was won two weeks ago in the Class Aʼs by the … Commodore, Connie Devine and her husband, Skipper Joe. We failed to mention this race for the previous three years because the Commodore at that time both couldnʼt bear reading of someone else winning the race or, if he won it himself (fat chance), wouldnʼt dare announce it for fear of a sheriffʼs raid.” The apologies continue: “The Yacht Club Staff assembled some 60 of our children to go roller skating at ʻRoll On Thomas (Zack) and Lynn Tsagarakis 860 535-0301 Americaʼ in Groton. As they drove up to the door the manager rushed out and said ʻRoll On…ʼ Quick thinking by the staff got them in as one family.” “We didnʼt miss this … because it hasnʼt happened but it will. Certain good citizens, plus the Yacht Club, plus the modest Associationʼs budget for these things … all are bringing this great event to pass. Now we will all be able to sit circle-wise … and converse.” Wendy Mathieu at one of her looms. Wendy Mathieu has been weaving for 40 years and calls herself a fiber artist. Her background was always in the Arts. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Fine Arts degree and then went on to receive her interior design degree and then her architecture degree from the Boston architectural center (now called the Boston Architectural College) and is licensed in both. While Wendy practiced architecture for 35 years, she always had a project on her loom. She considers weaving a “labor of love.” Sometimes at the conclusion of a residential project she would weave a wall hanging or a rug for a client as a house warming present. She has a studio in her house with two looms and is willing to give private lessons for anyone interested this summer. The small one is used to weave runners and scarves, while the large one can make rugs that are five feet wide as well as wall hangings, etc. She also has access to a very large loom for 9x12 foot rugs. “When I begin a project,” Wendy says, “I have an idea in mind of color and pattern but donʼt always sketch it out. Itʼs almost too confining,” she says. “I like to create as I am going along, I feel much more creative this way. I love to design a pattern and tie it all together with my creative use of color and texture.” Wendy has taken her weavings to farmersʼ markets and art shows this summer and will continue this fall. She is looking for commissions and she will be selling her weavings at the GLP Art Show.
