AWARDS AWARDS AWARDS AWARDS!
We donʼt know about you but it was the first
time I can remember that it wasnʼt boiling hot
for the popular Awards Night. The kids gathered
anxiously last Friday to see if a trophy
or ribbon or plaque would come their way.
But even if they didnʼt win an award they
were happy for their friends who did and
cheered loudly for the winners. Along with
the kids and YC staff who did a great job of
presenting, parents and grandparents filled
Clark Hall to capacity and lined the back and
sides of the Hall and flashes were popping!
HEAR N THERE
Our Hear N There guest this week?
Our July people already know
this but we thought our August
people would like to know that
“Our new neighbor, sort of” is
Her Eminence, Taylor Swift,
who has recently bought a
house on Watch Hill in Rhode
17.7 million, thatʼs dollars, folks!
Taylor and her pal, Her Wonderfulness,
Selena Gomez,
were seen at The Bridge Ice
Cream store in Mystic. Now
donʼt you wish you were here in
July?..... Moving on... News
from the South Shore Murphyʼs.
Billy will be up from Atlanta on
vacation from his job at
SunTrust for the first week in
August-- hopes to help out with
the Jr. Sailing Regatta and connect
with GLP friends. Right
after that, Mollie is heading off
to London to begin a teaching
job at the International
moving on from her position at
UK....... Thursday Pasta Night
was so successful last week
and so much fun! We took a lot
of pictures and promise to get
them into the paper next week.
But we had so much going on
this week that we had to cover.
At Pasta Night we promised the
Palominoʼs that they would get
into the paper because they
have never been in before and
they will be in - just not this
week.... Sally and John Huss
are usually at all the tennis
finals and we thought weʼd see
them at the Menʼs Singles
finals. Sally likes to enjoy a cold
Coke while she watches and
her nephew, Charlie Newell,
was playing in the finals. But,
we were informed, Sally and
Johnʼs son, Robbie, and his
wife, Carroll, had just had a little
baby girl named Adele Anne
who weighed in at 9 pounds.
So, John and Sally went home
to meet her. Weʼre sorry we
missed seeing you at tennis but
we understand!
East Dock
Danger Advisory
In the past, our community
has experienced a few frightening
incidents requiring rescue
off East Dock, known to some
as “Big Dock.” While many of
us love the thrill of leaping off
the dock or playing a spirited
game of matchstick, it is
absolutely vital that all residents,
their children, their
renters, and their guests be
aware of the real danger of
swimming off East Dock. The
current that flows past the dock
can move extremely quickly,
and can even endanger the
lives of experienced swimmers,
by sweeping people out
towards the sound and
exhausting their attempts to
return to the dock. Young children,
even those who can
swim, should NEVER swim off
the dock, and should instead
swim at one of the Pointʼs lovely
beaches. Even older children
and adults who can swim
should not swim off East Dock
unless they are truly strong
swimmers.
Groton Long Point, CT 06340-8205
If you are swimming off the
dock and find yourself being
pulled out by the current, donʼt
fight it by trying to swim directly
back to the dock. This would
tire you out. Instead, swim at
an angle to the shore. If thatʼs
not possible, float on your back
until the pull of the current
lessens, and then swim diagonally
to shore.
Anyone who chooses to swim
off the dock does so at his or
her own risk, but as a community
we obviously want to
encourage people to make safe
choices regarding swimming
here at the Point. We do post
warning signs and provide life
rings. However, no measure
replaces the power of good
that all people enjoying summers
at Groton Long Point
things of local note were neglected.
In the issue of August
“A number of things of
Wendy Mathieu has been
herself a fiber artist. Her background
was always in the Arts.
She graduated from the
While Wendy practiced
architecture for 35 years, she
“labor of love.” Sometimes at
the conclusion of a residential
hanging or a rug for a client as
a house warming present.
Over the years Wendy has
taught weaving to children as
a studio in her house with two
this summer. The small
one is used to weave runners
and scarves, while the large
one can make rugs that are five
feet wide as well as wall hangings,
etc. She also has access
to a very large loom for 9x12
foot rugs.
“When I begin a project,”
Wendy says, “I have an idea in
mind of color and pattern but
donʼt always sketch it out. Itʼs
almost too confining,” she says.
“I like to create as I am going
this way. I love to design
a pattern and tie it all together
with my creative use of color
and texture.”
Wendy has taken her weavings
to farmersʼ markets and art
continue this fall. She is looking
Chimichurri Sauce
At The GLPWO luncheon in
June I was asked to write a column
on easy sauces for meat
and chicken. I took this suggestion
and present chimichurri
sauce and “Hello Dolly” pesto
sauce next week..
The origin of the word
chimichurri is unclear. One
story says it is a corruption of
English words, most commonly
the name Jimmy Curry or
Jimmy McCurry, supposedly a
meat wholesaler.
The Argentine gourmet Miguel
Brascó claims that the word
chimichurri came about when
the British were captured after
the failed British invasions in
1806-1807. The prisoners
asked for condiments for their
food, mixing English, aboriginal
and Spanish words. Still other
stories say the name of the
sauce comes from the Basque
settlers who arrived in
Argentina in the 19th century,
and the name of the sauce
comes from the term tximitxurri,
loosely translated as "a mixture
of several things in no particular
order." Chimichurri is one of
most delicious and versatile
sauces around. It's traditionally
served with grilled steak, and is
an essential part of the
Argentinean BBQ, but it goes
great with chicken and fish too.
Chimichurri works well as a
marinade, and is also delicious
with Katy Reed
on vegetables. I love it best
with grilled short ribs.
You will quickly develop your
own proportions in this recipe.
Some people prefer more garlic,
some prefer only parsley,
and some add cilantro and
fresh tomatoes - experiment to
come up with your own signature
chimichurri.
1 cup firmly packed, coarsely
chopped flat-leaf parsley,
stemmed
3 tablespoons red or white
wine vinegar
4 large garlic cloves, minced
(2 1/2 tablespoons)
2 tablespoons oregano
leaves- can use 2 teaspoons
dried oregano
¼- 1 teaspoons crushed red
pepper, depending on how
much heat you want
Kosher salt and freshly
ground pepper
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
In a food processor, combine
the parsley, vinegar, garlic,
oregano and crushed red pepper.
Process until smooth; season
with salt and pepper.
Transfer the sauce to a bowl
and pour the olive oil over the
mixture. Let stand for at least
20 minutes.
The chimichurri can be refrigerated
overnight. Bring to room
temperature before serving.
GRAPE NOTES
by John Lombardo
One fascinating aspect of
wine is the manner in which
regional cuisines developed to
complement the wines indigenous
to the region. For example
Coq au Vin in Burgundy or
Choucroute in Alsace. Katy
Reed in her food column this
week points out that
Chimichurri may have been created
by Basque settlers in
Argentina. So, as we look for a
wine pairing for grilled meat
with Chimichurri, what better
place to look than Argentina?
Malbec is a black grape
varietal and is one of the most
widely planted wine grapes in
Argentina. It is pronounced
“mahl-beck.” The grape has its
origins in France where it is
one of the six varietals that are
permitted in wines from the
exalted Bordeaux region. It is
used by the Bordelais to add a
plumlike flavor and complexity
to their wines. However, its
popularity in Bordeaux has
waned as it is prone to damage
from frost and is susceptible to
several vine diseases.
It is Argentina, however, that
has had the most commercial
success with the Malbec grape
and it may be thought of as that
countryʼs national varietal. The
best Malbecs come from the
Mendoza region of Argentina
which abuts the Andes
GLP NEWS Page 4
Mountains. The high altitude
and the hot climate make
Mendoza well-suited for growing
Malbec. Malbec has also
enjoyed some success in Chile
while it is virtually non-existent
in California.
Malbec is similar to Merlot in
that it is fairly fruity and medium
to full-bodied. However, it is
not as elegant as Merlot.
Malbecs can be lush and earthy
and can be aged. They, however,
lack the structure of finer
wines. Malbec wines are very
dark in color and are mouthfilling
with flavors reminiscent of
blackberries and plums.
You perhaps remember the
news stories from the 1990s
that touted the health benefits
of red wine. Further studies
have suggested that it is a certain
group of chemical compounds
in red wine which may
deliver these benefits. Malbec
is one of the two grape types
with the greatest presence of
these compounds.
Scientists may still be unsure
of the health benefits, but you
can be sure if you are grilling
meat this summer and topping
it with Chimichurri sauce, a relatively
inexpensive (generally
less than $20) Malbec will
make a great pairing.
The cousins......
Well, we went from tropical
to arctic weather all in one day.
The Womenʼs Singles took
place in October-like weather
which was a nice break from
the boiling hot weather we had
been experiencing but, where
were our fleeces?
In the semi finals Meg Hill
Bibby defeated Liz Butler 10-5
and Lesley Mahoney, who has
been playing very strongly this
summer, defeated Katherine
Miller who had just returned
from a family trip to Italy.
And so, as in the case so
many times here in GLP, relatives
from the same family were
vying for that first place trophy.
Meg and Lesley, who are
cousins, would go inside the
fence to try and win that July
Singles trophy. I must admit I
missed part of the first set as I
had raced home to get my
woolies on but I didnʼt race fast
enough!
The gallery that day consisted
of all kinds of relatives.
Every person, except for Liz
Butler, was a relative from the
same family tree. There were
mothers, sisters, children, inlaws,
nephews, nieces, cousins
and then, the outsider, me.
A brisk wind was a definite
factor holding the tennis balls
up and dropping them in when
it looked as if they were flying
way out. At first Meg was doing
a good job of keeping Leslie
back and then dropping some
shots for winners. But Leslie
decided that two could play that
game and dropped a few of her
own in. Then Meg tried to draw
Lesley in and lobbed a few over
her head. And then guess what
Lesley tried! Right! Meg worked
the score up to 5-2 and then
took the first set at 6-2.
In the 2nd set Lesley forestalled
Megʼs bid for set and
match by some good net work
and there were a number of
deuce games, but it was not to
be. Meg took the 2nd set at 6-1
and became the Womenʼs
Singles winner for July.
The “relative gallery!”
There were three Bocciaʼs
in the Menʼs Singles semi finals
but only one ended up in the
finals. Steven (the younger)
played against Charlie Newell
to see who would walk off with
the July trophy. And it was a
very exciting finals which showcased
a lot of power and
steadiness and ended up going
to 3 sets.
In the beginning, Steven did
a good job of returning
Charlieʼs powerhouse serves
but Charlie moved Steven
around by hitting accurately
from side to side. Charlie
jumped out to a 3-1 lead but
Steven made up those two
games and drew even at 3-3
and then went ahead to 4-3.
Charlie served at 4-5 and
Steven was so steady he had
Charlie on the run with his
returns and Steven went on to
win the first set at 6-4.
In the second set Charlie
was steadier and the games
turned into great overhead
shots and excellent lob shots
on both parts. At 3-0 Charlieʼs
GLP NEWS Page 5
power serves were back but he
began to double fault. He liked
hitting power shots to Stevenʼs
backhand and then coming to
the net to put it away. But
“Steady Steven” came back
from a 2-5 deficit to tie the
match at 5-5. At 6-5 Charlie
was smashing his overheads
but Steven kept returning them.
Then Charlie came to the net,
put away his shots and won the
second set at 7-5.
The 3rd set was a little sloppier
with both losing serves but
Charlieʼs serves proved truer
and he took the third set 6-1!
Gardening On The Edge
with Heather Laidlaw
All Booked Up!
Nibbling on the Wild Side
Iʼve tried for years to establish
fruit in the garden, but
with the exception of Figgy,
the Noank Firehouse fig, my
plans have not come to
fruition. The blueberry was
finicky about soil pH, the
juneberry did not appreciate
the wind, and the dwarf cherry,
obstructing the sacrosanct
view, was promptly deported.
Domestic fruit production
demands constant maintenance
and years of patience.
But my fruit experiments
have made me more conscious
of natureʼs bounty.
After seeing them in a catalog,
I started some wonderberries
from seed one year.
That summer, I went to
California and saw them
everywhere. Then I returned,
and found them on local
roadsides, too! I recently
identified an elderberry that I
must have passed a thousand
times, after buying and
planting a couple last year.
Gardening sharpens the
senses, the observation and
attention to the natural world.
Wild edibles surround us at
this time of year. Maybe not
enough to feed 15 houseguests
or turn out a decent
batch of jam, unless you devote
your life to it, but more than
enough for snacking as you
walk and an occasional family
dessert. Wild fruits are often
exponentially higher in antioxidants
than their domestic
cousins, so a little goes a long
way. They also tend to be
sourer and seedier.
Before disclosing a couple of
hot spots, first let me disclaim.
Donʼt eat anything you canʼt
positively identify as safe and
edible! Deadly nightshade
grows among the brambles,
poison ivy abounds.
Thereʼs a strange concentration
of foraging fruit on Duryea
Drive. Itʼs flanked with a
bumper crop of ripe wine
berries now, with some blackberries
mixed in.
Chokecherries and elderberries
hang overhead, still green.
Wild grapes and wild mint can
be found in the area, and
autumn olives not far off.
Another foraging area of note is
the Joe Devine Riviera, full of
beach plums. It looks like a
good crop is ripening this year.
To 'see' a whale off South
Beach you will need a copy of If
You Want To See a Whale by
Julie Fogliano. A lovely and
poetic picture book about a boy
and his dog on a quest for a
whale, this book is about the
power of imagination and
patience. It's a book that can
be enjoyed by all ages, and a
wonderful addition to your
'seaside' book collection.
"Matilda" the musical won
four Tony awards this year, so
now's a good time to revisit the
modern classic book by Roald
Dahl. Matilda is the story of an
extraordinary girl who triumphs
in spite of her difficult parents.
It's both funny and wicked.
There's a great middlegrade
fantasy series out now
called The Unwanteds by Lisa
McMann. These books are a
mashup of Harry Potter and the
Hunger Games (without the
Eleanor & Park is a teen
adults. It's about two misfits:
Eleanor, aka 'Big Red' who is
teased for her fiery hair and
personality; and quiet Park who
is into comics and 80s new
wave music. The relationship
begins when Eleanor & Park sit
This is a story about young love
that will stick with you.
Music for Newtown
by Leah Deceasare
Moved by the horrors in
Newtown, Connecticut, our
hometown, my sister, Beth
Bogdan, launched Music for
Newtown. She is the Senior
Director of Artist Relations for
Republic Records who sponsored
the online auction in
March 2013.
After December 14, Beth,
like so many who called
Newtown home, felt drawn, and
returned to Newtown. There
was an incredible, immediate
outpouring from people wanting
to help, but the needs continue.
Many of the affected families
are out of work and struggling
financially. Resources are
needed for ongoing counseling
services and eventually for
building a new school.
The United Way of Western
Connecticut waived their
administration fee so all proceeds
directly benefited
Newtown needs through the
Sandy Hook School Support
Fund.
Artists who supported
Music for Newtown included
Elton John, Tim McGraw, The
Eagles, Eddie Vedder, John
Mayer, Lisa Marie Presley, One
Direction, Taylor Swift and
Rush. Others who donated
were Five for Fighting, 3 Doors
Down, Colbie Caillat, Florence
and the Machine, Of Monsters
and Men and the list goes on.
www.cinderellascc.com
Seven autographed guitars
were up for bidding and Jack
Johnson donated a ukelele
handmade in Hawaii valued at
$600.00 before it was signed by
him; it sold for $2800. A signed
Eddie Vedder tour poster pulled
in $1,800 and the top grossing
item was a bass signed by the
members of Blink 182 which
sold for $8,000.
Beth pulled this off while
working a full time job and
nearly single-handedly conceiving,
planning, promoting and
executing the auction in only
three months. The auction
raised nearly $36,000.
Visit MusicforNewtown.org or
the Music for Newtown
Facebook page for more information
and to learn about
future, smaller auctions as new
donations continued coming in
after the auction closed.
New Management Team to Give
Annual “GLP Open” a Fresh Look!
A Special Report by Our
Intrepid Reporter and
Professional Body Builder,
John Huss
The biggest event on the GLP
Menʼs Golf Calendar is about to
have a fresh look promises Tom
Sullivan, newly named CEO of
the prestigious GLP Open. This
annual event, which serves as
the Gala Curtain Closer to the
summer season of Menʼs Golf
on the Point will be held on
Monday, August 26 at the challenging,
tick-infested Richmond
Country Club in Rhode Island.
Tom “Smiley” OʼSullivan is the
perfect choice to assume command
of this important tournament,
taking the reins from
long-time event coordinator and
public servant Stearns Martin.
Tom, who has never had a
bad day in his life (probably
because he is lucky enough to
be married to the perky and
personable Candy), plans to
institute some new wrinkles to
the 18-Hole Scrambles event.
First, “O”Sullivan is giving the
Open an Irish Theme. On the
course, the beverage cart will
offer Green Beer and Baileyʼs
Whiskey. The traditional logoed
baseball caps will be replaced
with sporty little Tam
OʼShanters. And Leprechauns
will be placed strategically
throughout the course to throw
errant golf balls back into the
fairway.
David Cruthers has once
again generously offered his
Weston Point property as the
site of always popular Post
Tourney Party and Awards
Ceremony. But once there, you
can expect some exciting new
wrinkles! How about this… the
First-Ever GLP Irish Step
Dancing Contest! The following
Sons of Erin have already committed
to perform: Jack “O”
Foley, Tom “O”Dolan, Bob and
Danny “O”Murphy and the “O”
Kellehers, father and son. This
will be followed by a lovely rendition
of Danny Boy, sung by
world acclaimed tenor John
“O”McGee. And finally, the traditional
menu of grilled shrimp
and kielbasa will be supplemented
with corn beef and cabbage,
a hearty stew, and a
dram or two of Irish Coffee.
The origin of the GLP Open
goes back many, many years,
pre-dating even Stearns Martin!
According to one old timer
(requesting anonymity for fear
the Groton Assessors will discover
he does in fact have a
water view) there was once a
small nine-hole course on the
Point itself! The first tee was in
the circle of Clubhouse Point,
and the course criss-crossed
the Point south of where the
Casino is today. The lagoon
was of course a real hazard, as
were the few cottages then in
existence. Our source recalls
that owners generously kept
their windows open (mosquitoes
hadn't been invented yet)
during the golfing season to
help players who might otherwise
be stymied. On Labor Day,
a season-ending tournament
was played with the winner
receiving a handsome Sterling
silver trophy. A quaint tradition
in those days was to then throw
the winner and his trophy off
the end of the South Beach
Dock! This is a tradition Tom
“O”Sullivan might consider
reviving for the upcoming 2013
edition of the famous GLP
