Dear Alumni and Friends:
It is a pleasure to greet you on behalf of Southern Arkansas University
as we move into a challenging and exciting new century.
With the 100-year celebration marking the creation of this fine University
coming next year, we have a great deal for which to be thankful.
The founders of the Third District Agricultural School had the
foresight to realize that from small acorns great oaks can grow. However,
I wonder if they, in their wildest dreams, could have envisioned
what their small agricultural high school would one day become.
This University, along with Arkansas Tech University, Arkansas
State University, and the University of Arkansas at Monticello were
all once district agricultural schools. The 1909 legislation, signed by
Governor Donaghey on April 1, 1909, led to the development of four
fine universities that currently have an enrollment of more than 22,000
students.
Dr. James Willis, professor of history at Southern Arkansas University
for many years, is near the completion of a detailed history of the
University that will be released in 2009. This publication will be a
treasure many of you will want to own.
You will be hearing much more about our plans to commemorate the
founding of this wonderful Institution. It will feature a symbolic signing
of the legislation creating the agricultural schools at the Arkansas
State Capitol. We’re also planning a recreation of the original Mulerider
trips to catch the train at McNeil.
The SAU Alumni Association is going to be very involved in the
centennial, and I hope you will support their efforts. You are making a
real difference in the life of Southern Arkansas University, and we all
appreciate your support.
Sincerely,
The Stater
Bond approved for
student activity and
recreation center
The Southern Arkansas University
board of trustees has approved a bond not
to exceed $6.5 million for the construction
of a student activity and recreation
center and improvements of academic
and administrative facilities.
While it is still being decided what all
the student and activity recreation center
will contain, $4 million of the bond is being
earmarked for this project. The other
monies will go to various projects on
campus, including renovations in Overstreet
Hall and a facelift for Wilson Hall,
as well as the replacement of air conditioning
units in that building.
According to Dr. Donna Allen, vice
president for student affairs, students
have been discussing with administrators
the need for an improved activity and
recreation center for more than a year.
“In 2006-07 the Student Government
Association administered a survey of the
student body, resulting in 93 percent being
in favor of the construction of a recreation
center and fee increase to support
the project,” Allen said. “The administration
and students will research recreation
reject big-spending lifestyles and live
well below their means. Danko found
that most wealthy individuals built
Ribble family funds new sign
Ribble family members clockwise from left include: Alan Ribble, Conner Ribble, Sarah
Ribble, Kerry Ribble, Kelly Ribble, Barry Ribble, Parker Ribble, Camille Ribble, Ronnie
Ribble, and Sophie Webb. Joining them in the photo is SAU President Dr. David Rankin.
A dedication was held Friday, May 16, for the new SAU sign in front of Overstreet
Hall. The sign was funded by the family of the late Patricia Baker Ribble, who graduated
from Southern Arkansas University, then Southern State College, in 1956, and was the
homecoming queen that year.
The unveiling of the plaque was made by the
Ribble grandchildren: Sarah and Conner, children
of Alan and Kerry Ribble of Texarkana; and
Parker, son of Barry and Kelly Ribble of Magnolia.
SAU President Dr. Rankin complimented the
beauty and size of the sign, and said it certainly did
the University more justice than the former sign in
front of Overstreet Hall.
“We finally have a sign worthy of the University.
This is built so that as you come up the hill
on Jackson Street you can see the sign,” Rankin
said. “I know Pat would be proud of this in her
memory.”
Further remarks about Patricia Baker Ribble
Jeanie Bismark, foundation
director, shares a moment with
Ronnie Ribble.
were made by Dr. David Ashby, a professor in accounting, finance and economics at
SAU. Ashby said that he found out from a family member that Ribble was the very
definition of a southern lady, and described her as someone that “bloomed where she was
planted” in Magnolia. Ashby also discovered that Ribble’s favorite flowers were red roses
and, ironically, that was what Pat King of the Physical Plant had already planted in front
of the sign. “Isn’t it funny how things just work out,” Ashby said.
Ribble, who was also known for her laughter and her love of the piano and the organ,
was the daughter of Milburn and Marie Baker. Her brother, Dayton Baker, and
“Beauty and the Beef” takes first place
The Mulerider Steak Cookers team took
first place in the parade competition Saturday,
May 17, at the 20th annual Magnolia
Blossom Festival. The theme of the SAU
float was “Beauty and the Beef.”
“We really wanted to be able to utilize
our costumes from this year’s homecoming
and the theme, and it just kind of came together,”
said Ceil Bridges, alumni director.
“I watched the performance and the crowd
was cracking up laughing.”
Mark Trout, associate professor of business,
played the role of “The Beef.” Outfitted
in a hat labeled “The Beef,” Trout also
donned a steak suit. Summer Carter, Miss
SAU 2007, played the role of “Beauty,”
and the pair theatrically wooed and danced
in a skit to impress judges in downtown
Magnolia.
The team also took third place in
the showmanship category, which is
judged on a skit the team performed
later in the day. Frank Byers, SAU
cheerleading co-captain, said his
advice to his team before the curtains
were drawn was simple.
“I just told them that we weren’t going
to choreograph it, we were going to
feel the moment,” Byers said.
That strategy worked and added to
the list of accolades the Mulerider team
has picked up in the past at the festival.
Members of the Mulerider Steak Cookers
2008 team included Becky Bell,
Bridges, Josh Kee, Aaron Street, and Trout.
Although the team did not place in the
actual steak cooking category, more than
one person remarked that you could cut the
Alumni Association seeks help with bridge
The Southern Arkansas Alumni Association
is searching for donors whose
generous gifts will make a bridge on campus
a reality. The bridge will connect the
Welcome Center with Wilkins Stadium.
“The cost of the project is estimated at
$50,000, and plans are for the bridge to
be completed by the first football game of
the fall 2009 season,” said David Butler, a
member of the SAU Alumni board and the
coordinator for this project. Butler said it
is anticipated that Unit Structures Company,
a local manufacturing company, has
been selected to work on the project.
Mike Waters, the president of the SAU
Alumni Board that governs the SAU
Alumni Association, said this bridge will
be a valuable asset to the University.
“With all the construction taking place
on the campus, this is a natural direction
for the Alumni Association to follow,”
Waters said. “This is by far the largest
project the association has taken on, and
the bridge is going to be the kind of project
that alumni will be proud they have
A dedication ceremony for the SAU
counseling program’s new training facility
was held Thursday, May 8, in Salon
B of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus
and Community Center. Following the
ceremony, the two new training labs in
Cross Hall were dedicated in memory of
Dr. Dan Bernard and in honor of Dr. Ann
K. Thomas, former SAU professor and
executive director of the Arkansas Board
of Examiners in Counseling.
contributed to.”
According to Jasper Lewis, physical
plant director, the planned alumni bridge
will be a pre-manufactured laminated
bridge provided by Unit Structures of
Magnolia at a cost of about $30,000. Additional
costs come from the substantial
concrete abutements that will have to be
constructed on each side of the bridge at
a cost of $5,000 each. Also, due to the
signifigant differences in elevation from
Artist rendering
one side of the bridge to the other, extensive
earthwork is required to insure ADA
standards are maintained at a cost of approximately
$7,500.
Those who make donations of $125
or more will be honored with a brick in
Legacy Lane.
Alumni Director Ceil Bridges said a
ceremony to honor the bridge will be held
in conjunction with SAU’s centennial
celebration.
Democrat-Gazette, and more recently on KATV Channel 7 on April 28, 2008.
It has caught the media’s attention both because it is a new program fulfilling
a need in the market and because of its proximity to the booming movie business
in Shreveport and north Louisiana.
The digital media major is replacing the broadcast journalism track. Students
Isaac Woods
Isaac Woods
enrolled at Southern
Arkansas
University in the
fall of 2001 at the
age of 16. Woods
was able to do
this because of
his hard work at
Dollarway High
School in Pine Bluff, Ark. He received
two separate double-promotions in
grade school, he graduated fifth in his
high school class, and two years ahead
of schedule. He was awarded the SAU
Foundation scholarship for his achievements.
Woods kept up this impressive
pace at SAU, completing his bachelor’s
of business administration degree
with major emphasis in finance
in August of 2004, just three years
after arriving. He graduated with
Summa Cum Laude honors, and was
inducted into Alpha Chi and Sigma
Beta Delta National Honor Societies.
In addition to his impressive
academic achievements at SAU,
Woods also found time in his three
years here to join a fraternity (Phi
Beta Sigma) and take active roles in
many other student organizations,
including Students in Free Enterprise,
Phi Beta Lambda, Business
Student Advisory Council, Accounting
and Finance Club, and the Black
Student’s Association. He also met
his college sweetheart, Monique,
who he married in May of 2007.
Immediately after graduation,
Woods moved to St. Louis, Mo.
Shortly thereafter, he was hired by
Edward Jones Investments, a large,
privately-held investment company
headquartered in the St. Louis area.
There, in his role as a retirement
sales services specialist, Woods assisted
the firm’s thousands of financial
advisors by providing them and
their clients with technical expertise
on individual and business retirement
plans, education plans, IRS
regulations, and changes impacting
these areas. While at Edward Jones,
Woods earned both a NASD Series
7 and Series 63 securities licenses,
as well as the Accredited Asset
Management Specialist certification
from the College of Financial Planning.
After almost two years at Edward
Jones, Woods left the company to
pursue a master’s degree in business
administration at Washington
University, St. Louis’ prestigious
Olin Business School. Enrollment at
Olin, a consistently top 30 ranked
business school, was the main reason
Woods wanted to move to St.
Louis after graduation; however, he
was able to gain valuable work experience
with Edward Jones before
his enrollment.
At Olin, Woods was awarded the
Consortium for Graduate Studies
in Management fellowship, and
has continued his history of academic
success. He has decided to
continue to concentrate in the area
of finance, broadening his previous
focus of financial services to
include corporate finance. After a
very successful first year at Olin,
Woods interned with S.C. Johnson
& Sons, Inc., a consumer products
company based in Racine, Wisconsin.
Impressed with the result of his
I was completely prepared
for medical school after SAU.
I mean medical school wasn’t
easy, but what professional
school is?
- Dr. Catherine Irwin
STORY BY BECKY BELL
Sending seven to
medical school
It has been 40 years since a group of seven students from
Southern Arkansas University were accepted into medical
school.
And as the University prepares to embark on a new chapter in
its history books with the building of the new Science and Tech-
nology Center, it seemed like an appropriate time to remember a
group, that as far as anyone knows, is the largest one of its kind
in the history of SAU.
The year was 1968. In national news that year, the Detroit
Tigers won the World Series, Martin Luther King was assassi-
nated and the Vietnam War waged on.
In Magnolia, seven students, six males and one female with
goals of becoming doctors, were all accepted into medical
schools. The group included Dr. John Smith of Conway, Ark.;
Dr. Ronnie Erwin of Fort Worth, Texas; Dr. Robert Henderson
of Dallas, Texas; Dr. Catherine Irwin of Anchorage, Alaska;
Dr. Steve Jones of El Dorado, Ark.; Dr. Harold Lynn Norman
of Jacksonville, Florida; and Dr. Tommy Polk of Spring, Texas.
Henderson, who has practiced general adult medicine since
1973 in Dallas, said several professors who taught members of
the group recognized potential in the ambitious students and
pushed them to continue their studies. One of those special
professors was Avalee Cox, who is now memorialized with a
scholarship in her name.
“It was a time in Arkansas that the state required certain
courses, and we actually completed our schooling in three years
and finished up our pre-med,” Henderson said, adding for clarifi-
cation that the members of the group didn’t graduate from SAU,
but were accepted into medical school based on their pre-med
requirements.
Henderson, who lives in the Turtle Creek area of Dallas, said
he comes back to Magnolia a few times a year to see his mother,
Daisy Uhrich, and his stepmother, Judy Henderson. During those
visits, he looks at the campus and remembers the days when he
took his labs and lectures primarily in Overstreet Hall.
The plans to build the 64,000-square-foot Science and Technology
Center are definitely something to be proud of, he said.
The project is tentatively scheduled to begin September 2008,
and should be completed a year later.
“I think it is wonderful, and I think that SAU is a tremendous
asset to south Arkansas and Magnolia; it really is,” he said. “I am
very proud of where the school has come. It has really grown.”
Foundation Director Jeanie Bismark said SAU’s Science Center
will help students receive an even more advanced education
in the sciences than in the past.
“SAU has a tradition of excellence as evidenced by the success
of our graduates in achieving entrance into and success in
medical, veterinary, and pharmacy schools. The science center
will enable the University to build on our history by providing
modern, up-to-date classroom and laboratory facilities where
students can get hands-on experience with the latest technology,
preparing them for the work force or for future studies.”
You would say it is only the breezes,
but it is my voice coaching the lovers.
To my shade
they come together.
I hear what no one else
has ever been allowed to hear,
for secrets told to me are always safe.
Some are bold and some are shy, but all
are brought by the same impulses; all comers
tell the same old, old story that has been told
for ages long gone by into the dim and distant past.
Each new year
brings new faces
to my ever welcome shade.
I love them all. They are mine,
my children. And when each year I hear
anew the honeyed words beneath my boughs
I think of all the campus lovers I have known
and realize that even a pine upon a campus dear
reaps pleasure from the surge of life about its feet.
I am the
campus pine.
My life is
sweet.
It has long been said that a picture is worth a thousand words.
What then does this photograph of Carl Wallace and Ona Price, later
Ona Wallace, say? What is the story behind what he is holding and
showing off for the camera and why she is wearing an amused, shylooking
smile?
The answers to these questions remain a mystery, but make for
an interesting pondering, especially when considering the legend of
the Lone Pine Tree that has been passed down throughout Southern
Arkansas University’s history. According to stories, this tree is where
young couples would go on the University campus to become engaged.
Dr. James Willis, director of the SAU archives, said his theory is that
the photo could very well be a link to the Lone Pine Tree.
“As for whether Carl is holding a ring, I would vote yes,” Willis
said. “There must have been a purpose in taking the photo and in the
pose of Carl. What else would he be holding that one could not see
as clearly? Surely not a bug! And if it were a bug, would Ona have a
pleased half-smile on her face?”
This photograph could have been made anytime from 1921 to 1925,
according to Bettie Clark, one of the couple’s four children. Clark,
who lives in Houston, said she knows her parents attended SAU in
1925 when the school became the Agricultural and Mechanical College,
Third District.
Clark found the photo when she was helping her son work on some
genealogy research and then shared it with Jeanie Bismark, director of
the SAU Foundation. Clark said she shared the photograph because of
the visual historical perspective the photo offers as to how the campus
looked, but she didn’t think a lot about what her parents were doing in
the photo.
“Jeanie got really excited because she was telling me about the history
of SAU being compiled and about the tree, which I knew nothing
about until they mentioned it,” Clark said. “But I do know that mother
and daddy got engaged, and maybe even got married, while they were
still there.”
Clark’s mother, Ona, grew up in a community called Christie’s
Chapel just south of Magnolia. Her father, Carl, grew up in Carthage,
Ark., which is northwest of Fordyce. Although she doesn’t know if the
photo she has of her parents is telling the story of their engagement,
she does know a few things about their life attending the institution
that later became SAU.
“I know my mother was in plays, and I think she played Beth in
‘Little Women,’” Clark said. “She also worked in the kitchen and dining
hall, which is how she met my father. After they got to know each
other, she would always go and eat with him. He played football and
got his nose broken two or three times.”
There is also a story about her father, his group of friends and a prize
chicken whose fate was the same as an average fowl.
“I think they barbecued it,” Clark said.
As for the photo, Clark said she hasn’t assigned any fictional tales
to it, but admits she would like to uncover the mystery. Although she
isn’t sure anyone could tell her what is really going on because the
photographer remains a mystery, she keeps her reflection of the photo
simple.
“What I think is that they were just enjoying each other. It just looks
like they were happy to be together,” she said.
Gooooooo...
CHEERLEADERS!!!
The Southern Arkansas University cheerleading squad participated
in the National Cheerleading Association’s competition in Daytona,
Florida, on April 10 and 11. The squad placed fifth in their division and
performed in both an indoor arena and in an open arena near the beach.
The competition drew competitors from across the nation. Nearby
University of Central Arkansas in Conway participated, as well as the
University of Little Rock. Larger schools, such as the University of Virginia
and the University of Kentucky, were also in the mix.
This is the second time the Mulerider co-ed cheerleading squad has
participated in the competition. Ceil Bridges, cheerleading sponsor, said that each year of competition better prepares
the team for the next.
“The team is still incredibly new to this level of competition, and our co-ed squad is only in its second year,” Bridges
said. “What is so wonderful about competing in nationals is that it provides an outlet for our team to see what is out
there and it helps us to continually raise the bar on our own performance.”
Cheerleading squads at nationals are judged on their stunting ability and the spirit they project on stage. In the
spirit aspect of the performance, the cheerleaders used rope and cowboy hats as props to showcase the spirit of the
Muleriders.
Cheerleaders who competed in this year’s national competition include Jasmine Abbit, Brennan Beams, Frank Byers,
Morgan Brantley, Joni Bridges, Gennie Caldwell, Kayleigh Collins, Michael Flanagan, Cierra Harris, Whitney Haynes,
Rianne Heron, Xavier Johnson, Melissa Lambert, Elizabeth Myrick, Kayla Pipkins, Mykolas Brian Sahene, Mykolas
Sakevicius, Kirby Turner, and Brent Walker.
An artist in the outfield
Magnolia insurance salesman Charles Tripp is selling paintings depicting
the Mulerider baseball team praying in a circle.
The paintings are $75 each and are available by calling Tripp at (870)
234-5412. One-third of the proceeds will go to benefit the SAU baseball
program.
Although Tripp said he follows many sports, baseball is by far his favorite.
He said he particularly enjoys watching the Muleriders.
The Muleriders had a phenomenal season and reached the 40-win plateau
for the third consecutive year, and reached the NCAA Division II No.1
ranking in the country for the first time in the University’s history in April.
SAU baseball receives a $500,000 grant
The Mulerider baseball team has
received a $500,000 grant from the
Willard and Pat Walker Charitable
Foundation, Inc., based in Fayetteville.
The grant will be used to make improvements
to the Southern Arkansas
University baseball field, but specific
plans have not yet been finalized.
Some of the ideas being considered
include a new score board, a new
press box, a concession stand, public
restrooms, and possibly office space
for coaches to meet with players and
prospective recruits in private.
SAU Foundation Director Jeanie
Bismark said she and Josh Kee, associate
director of the foundation, received
a letter Tuesday, May 6, that the grant
was accepted. The SAU Foundation
applied for the grant in February.
On Wednesday morning, the pair,
along with Mulerider Baseball Coach
Allen Gum, SAU Athletic Director Jay
Adcox, and SAU President Dr. David
Rankin, took part in a conference call
thanking the foundation for the gift.
They spoke to Debbie Walker, Executive
Director of the Willard and Pat
Walker Charitable Foundation.
“I just wanted to tell you what a
huge difference these grants make in
the baseball program,” Gum said. “So
much of recruitment is driven by the
quality of the facilities and we continue
to attract better recruits each year with
one of the nicest quality baseball fields
in (NCAA) Division II baseball.”
The Walker Charitable Foundation
first granted SAU a $160,000 matching
grant in July 2005 which provided the
lights at the baseball field.
Adcox described this year’s gift from
the Walker Charitable Foundation as
“tremendous” and said the benefits of a
top notch baseball facility impact more
than just the baseball team.
“This facility is a pride factor for the
University and the whole community,”
Adcox said.
Rankin said one of the goals for the
18 2008 summer Stater
University is to eventually
host the NCAA
Division II South Central
Regional Conference
tournament. The Muleriders’
season ended at the
semi-finals of the conference
with a loss to Delta
State.
The loss was the end
of a phenomenal season
by SAU (46-12) as they
reached the 40-win plateau
for the third consecutive
year and reached
the NCAA Division II
No. 1 ranking in the
country in April for the
first time in University
history. The team’s 46
victories matches the highest season
win total set by the 1987 NAIA World
Sending seven to medical school continued
Continued from page 14
Dr. Irwin, who now practices pediatric medicine in Anchorage,
Alaska, said she is very satisfied with the base preparation
she received at SAU. “I was completely prepared for medical
school after SAU. I mean medical school wasn’t easy, but what
professional school is?”
Irwin was an infant when her family moved to Magnolia in
1952. Her father, the late Dr. Frank Irwin, was hired to become
the head of the education department at the University. After
completing the 90 hours of necessary course work to apply for
medical school, she set her sights on the University of Arkansas
in Fayetteville. At 19, she was told she was the youngest person
they ever admitted. She was also attending medical school at
a time when only about 10 percent of her fellow students were
female.
Although it was a bit overwhelming at first, Irwin said she
never stopped believing in herself.
“I never had any doubt in my ability to do the work,” she
said.
Now, with 36 years of practice under her belt, she said she
is happy the way her life turned out, both with her practice
and her family. She and her husband, Bill Schneider, have
three children and one grandchild. And of course, the weather
in Alaska, which she has to admit is a lot more her style than
Arkansas’s sultry summers.
Time to relax...
Dr. Randall Adams and Dr. Henry Robison both retired
this year, and they are comparing their retirement gifts
(watches). Both professors were honored with a goodbye
ceremony in the Overstreet Boardroom on April 29.
