Another Triumph For
The Lincoln Whisky Shop
Reflect Editor, Elaine Ellis, said: “I actually came
across The Lincoln Whisky Shop when looking
for a Christmas present for my dad; I was so
impressed when I saw the range of whiskies on
offer – there was no one else in mind for this
Certificate of Recognition. I hope it encourages
more readers to see for themselves the varied
and extensive range offered by The Lincoln
Whisky Shop.”
Since October 2011, The Lincoln Whisky Shop
has been under the experienced and enthusiastic
management of Nick and Cathy Ridout. Nick told
Reflect: “The Lincoln Whisky Shop started life as one
of a small chain of local off-licenses here in Lincoln,
known as Pratt’s, but in 1976, it was transformed
into the specialist whisky shop it is today. We’re the
fourth set of owners since that time and only came
across the opportunity to buy the business by chance.
We were regular customers and discovered in a
chance conversation with the previous owners that
they were selling up, so Cathy and I decided to buy
it. I’d recently retired from 35 years in the Army and
was looking for something to do. I’ve always been
interested in whisky and odd/unusual drinks and felt
that shop keeping would be a fun and interesting
way to spend a few years, so we took the plunge. I’m
loving being my own boss as well as meeting people
from all over the country who share my passion for
whisky.”
The Lincoln Whisky Shop specialise in those rare
and unusual whiskies, spirits and liqueurs that
you won’t find in your local supermarket. Nick
said: “Our core business is whisky; we sell a wide
selection of malts and blends, the sort of bottles you
can get in the supermarket but we pride ourselves
on catering to a niche market as well, selling those
unusual varieties that you won’t find elsewhere. I also
relish the challenge of finding a whisky at special
request, whether it be from a small distillery or from
a certain year to give as a gift to mark a milestone
birthday or event. I aim to please and enjoy
responding to customer requests.”
As well as whiskies, The Lincoln Whisky Shop
sells a wide selection of spirits and liqueurs and
a small range of specialist gifts, including crystal
glasses and hip flasks. There’s also a selection of
miniatures to buy, which are especially good for
sampling a new whisky before committing to a
big bottle, as well as for cooking any recipes that
require a splash of whisky.
On hearing the news of their Certificate of
Recognition for Rare & Unusual Gifts, Nick
said: “Thank you so much for this Certificate Reflect.
It’s great to have all our hard work rewarded. Whisky
is a great investment. Some people invest in artwork
or jewellery, well whisky is another good investment,
especially at the moment with interest rates so
low. As well as being a great investment, whisky
also makes a great present, especially for anyone
celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. I
strive to offer my customers exactly what they’re
looking for; and if I don’t have it, I will endeavour to
get it for them.”
If you’re searching for the perfect place to buy
a loved one an unusual gift for their birthday
in 2012, Reflect would like to recommend the
range of whiskies on offer from The Lincoln
Whisky Shop, which dates back to 1976.
With such an extensive range, The Lincoln
Whisky Shop was the obvious choice for our
Certificate of Recognition for Rare &
Unusual Gifts.
Derek said: “Dad started this shop as he was working all
the hours he could for very little reward as a Co-Op manager,
so he decided to set up on his own and work for himself, be
his own boss. I left school and started working here in 1970
and plan to be here until I retire in eight years time. There’s
no-one in the family to take over from me, but hopefully I
can sell the business to ensure the H.E. Wilkinson name can
continue to serve the community of Cherry Willingham and
beyond for many years to come.”
Stocking a huge range of locally produced and sourced
beef, lamb and pork, H.E. Wilkinson & Son strive to offer
their customers reasonable prices and high quality meats
With a history of farming stretching back 400
years, the Ownsworth family began selling
their cold pressed extra virgin rapeseed oil
throughout Leicestershire, Lincolnshire,
Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire
two years ago.
Reflect spoke to Andrew Ownsworth, who said: “In
2001, my wife Ronnie (Veronica) and I moved our family
from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire, where we successfully
gained the tenancy of a 1,400-acre mixed arable
and stock farm in Fulbeck. We spent the next decade
altering and improving systems on the new farm, but
with increases in farm input costs, fuel, wages and rent
increases and unpredictable world commodity prices,
our income from the cereal and stock business made
life tough; we looked at ways to diversify. We planted
a 4,000 grape vineyard, part of which is grown within
a walled garden – we hope to have a rosé (pink) wine
available from May. We also renovated a beautiful
period cottage at the vineyard for self-catering holiday
A True Taste Of Lincolnshire
From H.E. Wilkinson & Son
Situated in the picturesque village of Cherry Willingham in Lincoln, H.E. Wilkinson & Son is a family-run
butchers that dates back to 1965. Founded by Bert Wilkinson, H.E. Wilkinson & Son is now in the capable
hands of Bert’s son Derek.
with a friendly service. Derek explained: “We get as much
of our meat as we can from local sources, local farmers
around the area, as well as bigger names including Browns
& Sons and Wrights of Boston. We have been getting our
pork from the same farmer since 1968. We’ve built up some
excellent connections locally and know where all our products
have come from – we can track them from field to plate and
I think our customers value that knowledge and trust.”
H.E. Wilkinson & Son stock a wide range of sausages
(including traditional Lincolnshire, pork and apple, pork
and leek, beef and tomato), burgers (including pork and
apple, plain beef and minty lamb) and joints, as well as
accommodation. However, our biggest and most
successful diversification project is our rape seed oil.”
Stocked in over 40 outlets, including local farm shops,
delis, butchers and bakers, Ownsworth’s Rape Seed
Oil has a great taste and a subtle earthy, nutty but not
overpowering flavour, which makes it a really versatile
addition to any kitchen. Andrew added: “Ownsworth’s
Rape Seed Oil information leaflets have been produced
and recipe brochures are always being circulated for
customers. We find that our customers love to ‘meet
their farmer’ and ask how their oil was produced; Ronnie
and I are always happy to chat to them and find the
feedback very useful.”
Ownsworth’s Rape Seed Oil is supplied in 250ml,
500ml, 5 litres and 25 litres (suitable for the catering
trade). Rape Seed Oil only contains 6.5g of saturated
fat compared to olive oil at 15.5g of saturated fat
meaning it’s great for anyone trying to cut down on
their fat and eat a healthier diet.
a selection of cooked meats, including ham, roast beef,
roast pork and their award-winning Haslet.
Every other year, H.E. Wilkinson & Son enter some
of their products in a local poacher competition held
at Lincolnshire Showground to judge their meat, as
Derek explained: “I started entering our products in this
competition about six years ago and we’ve had a very good
success rate – we always seem to come away with three or
four gold awards, as well as a handful of silver and bronze
awards. Our Haslet is a gold award winner. I’m planning on
entering some of our products into this year’s competition in
September.”
Open from 8am until 5:30pm (closed for lunch from
1pm until 2pm) everyday, including Sunday, there’s
no reason not to see the wide range of products on
offer for yourself. For more information, please call
