therapy and therapeutic support to men and women, aged 16 and over, living within Nottinghamshire
and further afield into the East Midlands.

Encouraging Men To Share In 2012
According to NHS statistics, men are three times more likely to take
their own life than women; in fact, in men under 35-years-old, suicide
is the second most common cause of death in England and Wales –
ahead of road traffic accidents, murder, HIV/AIDS or drug overdoses. It
is believed that this is due to men being more reluctant to talk about
their feelings or to seek help when they need it.
NCS MD, Leslie McDonald, said: “The tragic death of Gary Speed at the
end of last year has highlighted how common suicide is amongst men. There
are numerous clichés: the strong, silent type and the stiff upper lip but when
suicide rates are so high, a man’s silence really could be the death of him.
“The higher suicide rate among men is a worldwide phenomenon, but the
changing role of men in society seems to be to blame for the increases in
male suicide over recent years. As well as having a more stressful time in
achieving educational goals than their fathers and grandfathers, today’s
men are now less successful compared to their female counterparts and the
agony of adolescence has been prolonged, with adulthood and independence
being reached at a much later date – men are now not financially
independence until their mid-20s. We’re here to offer our services to
anyone who is feeling down and just wants someone to chat to, in complete
confidence.”
NCS has provided support, advice and therapy to thousands of
people over the last 30 years. As one of the most respected and
long-established counselling providers, NCS has a wealth of trained
counsellors, so they can help with almost any problem, but they mainly
deal with:
