Residential Art Courses at luxury
eco retreat in southern Spain
One week art courses in a beautiful, ecological setting with two renowned and highly respected artists…
Frederique Edy is a French sculptor whose work can
be found in the private collections of Prince Ranier
of Monaco and the Prince of Asturias. She has
also won many prestigious awards for her work in
France and Spain. Her work is shown internationally
in galleries of high regard. She will be taking life
drawing classes, teaching and helping students to
develop traditional and new techniques to capture the human form.
Thomas Neukirch is a German painter who lives
and works as an independent artist in Andalusia.
He was formed as a painter in the Academy of Fine
Arts in Lyon where he studied with the painter Jean
Bertholle, professor of the Academy of Fine Arts
in Paris. He exhibits regularly in highly respected
galleries in France, Spain, Germany and Argentina.
He will be teaching techniques in watercolour, Chinese ink, charcoal, pencil and
gouache. www.thomas-neukirch.com
Picture yourself sat in the middle of the stunning British
countryside, sun shining, with just the sounds of birds and
local wildlife keeping you company; could anything be more
relaxing? This is how serene and calming a painting holiday can
be, whatever your location, and the best thing is that anyone
can have a go, no matter what your age or ability.
The closest many of us come to including art in our holidays is by visiting
national galleries and museums, and taking in the most famous pieces of work.
Italy’s Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo’s magnificent painted ceiling, and The
Louvre in France, which is home to 35,000 works of art - including Leonardo Da
Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ - are just two of the most popular places for those looking to
soak up some art.
However, with so many of us leading hectic lives, this type of holiday offers the
chance to take life at a slower pace and really learn to enjoy and embrace the
great outdoors. Painting is also therapeutic and has a very calming effect on
both the mind and the body.
As most of us now own digital cameras, with access to instant images of the
landscape we’ve just captured, we often ignore the true beauty and detail when
admiring views of the countryside. Taking time to delicately paint or draw the
landscape before you is the best way to truly take in your surroundings and
ensure you notice every detail of what’s right in front of you.
The summer is the perfect time to pick up a brush; the good, dry weather and
long days mean you can sit out for hours, observing and recreating the vast
landscape in front of you. Watercolours are great for beginners and the gentle
colours mean you can’t go far wrong.
reading a book can delay the onset of dementia. In the study from the Mayo
Clinic in Minnesota, nearly 200 people ages 70 – 89 with mild memory problems
were compared to a group who had no impairment. Researchers asked the
volunteers about their daily activities within the past year, and how mentally
active they had been from 50 – 65-years-old; those who had been busy reading
or engaging in craft hobbies had a 40% reduced risk of memory impairment.
You don’t have to travel far to find something of beauty worth painting, as local
parks, churches and trails are guaranteed provide a great place to start. If you’re
looking to travel further afield, the glorious scenery of Scotland and the sunny
south coast are fabulous for painting, drawing and more adventurous activities
to combine with your art.
If you’re already an experienced artist and are looking to step it up slightly or
add a different perspective, there are many companies that organise painting
holidays abroad. Whether that’s the lush, green landscape of France or the
dramatic wilderness of Africa, a change of scene means a fresh challenge.
fusball and gym facilties. The extensive 22-acre park-like gardens afford
views to the sea and Sierra Cabrera mountain range. La Finca is within easy
Julie Nash is an experienced artist, illustrator
and qualified art tutor based on the Fylde coast
of Lancashire. Julie said: “For as long as I can
remember I’ve loved to draw but it wasn’t until I
was in my 30s that I decided to get a degree; I’ve
been a freelance illustration artist ever since and
have been teaching on a part-time basis for the
last five years. I teach adult leisure courses for
a couple of days each week at my local college
alongside my own private tuition and commission
work.”
Julie offers private, one-to-one tuition at her
home studio as well as group tuition for groups
of up to four. She added: “Although I can only
cater for four at home, I am happy to travel to your
venue if you have a larger group that would like
tuition I tailor my workshops and demonstrations
to suit individual groups so please contact me to
discuss your needs and for a personal quote. I’m
looking into providing painting holidays and short
breaks in the future, hopefully next year.”
Julie has also written and illustrated her own
book, ‘How to Paint Cats and Kittens in
Acrylic’, which is due for release via Search
Press in September 2012. Julie said: “I spent a
week in the studio drawing and illustrating this
step-by-step guide; photographs were taken at
every step of the way and tracings are included as
the book is aimed at beginners and intermediate
artists.” ‘How to Paint Cats and Kittens in
Acrylic’ will be available from all good book
stores, as well as online from Search Press,
priced £8.99 (ISBN 9781844487165).
Julie is happy to paint a commission from your
photographs. Many examples can be seen on
the website; amongst these are police horses
(including the painting that was awarded S.A.A.
‘Artist of the Year’ finalist) cats, dogs and
wildlife.
Created 19 years ago, the National Exhibition of
Wildlife Art (NEWA) is the brain-child of Marion
Tuffrey and a group of like-minded art enthusiasts
with conservation as one of their underlying
concerns. Marion told Reflect: “I moved to the
Wirral in 1993 from London, where there’s a big and
passionate art scene. At the time, there was nothing up
here, no exhibitions to inspire or stir creativity so I got
together with some friends and started NEWA. In the
early days it was funded by a legacy my aunt left me
and over the years we’ve moved venues a number of
times as we keep growing bigger and bigger. Last year
we had 17,000 people visit the exhibition plus 20,000
hits on our online exhibition; NEWA is the largest open
exhibition of its kind in the world. The 2012 exhibition
will be held at the award-winning Gordale Garden
Centre, which covers 21 acres, within a specially
constructed gallery space.”
For 2012, NEWA have just under 400 original pieces
of artwork, in both 2D and 3D, in various mediums
on display, within the large greenhouse which
is hosting the exhibit. Marion added: “We have
numerous paintings, wood and bronze sculptures and
ceramics from a range of artists from good amateurs
to top professionals. It’s a selected exhibition and each
year we have five different judges choosing exactly
which submitted pieces make it into the exhibit; we
get a lot more submissions that we have room to
include within the exhibition, so we have to ensure only
the best, most interesting pieces are chosen to keep
things interesting for the public. Our opening ‘wildlife
weekend’, from 13th to 15th, features a variety of
demonstrations from the best artists in the UK.”
The NEWA exhibition runs daily from 9:30am until
6pm from Friday 13th until Sunday 29th July. It’s
free to go in and have a look around and every
piece of artwork on display is for sale. Marion said:
“A percentage of profits made from the sale of the
artwork is donated to conservation causes – in 2011,
50% of the works on show were sold, which is a very
high percentage for any exhibition. Every year I am
absolutely astounded by the sheer variety of work
submitted to us; the originality of the work and the
way each piece is depicted differently is surprising.
For example, we may get four paintings of a robin,
but all four will be totally different in their style and
their atmosphere and what they evoke in the viewer.
Nothing we do would be possible without the huge
team of dedicated volunteers who give us their time,
energy and expertise every year.”
With plenty of parking and a wonderful
restaurant onsite, why not visit NEWA and
make a day of it – you don’t even need
to worry about the great British weather
putting a dampener on your day! For more
information, or to view the online
gallery, visit www.newa-uk.com or
08 Seasonal Recipe
09
The Tastes of March
by Neil Walker, our resident chef
March can be every bit as cold and miserable
weather-wise as February but at least it has one
bonus - hope! Signs of life are beginning to show in
the garden and the hedgerows; primroses will defy
the harshest of weather with their yellowy flowers,
likewise daffodils, and whilst you may be waiting a
few months yet for sleeveless shirts and shorts, at
least spring is starting to show a leg.
Of all the wild spring greens, nettles are perhaps the
most reliable and easily identifiable. Not put off by
the harsh winter we have just had, I’ve noticed that
they are sprouting all around me when walking my
dog. Armed with a set of gardener’s gloves and a pair
of scissors I recently collected a small bag of the
tiniest nettles with tender stalks and used whole in
a green nettle soup. Nettles are rich in iron, formic
and silic acid and natural histamines - a healthy spring
tonic if ever there was one.
However, March to me means one thing only in
the kitchen - purple sprouting broccoli. I can’t get
enough of the stuff and although prices are nearly
double of that last year (once again due to the cold
winter), I’m prepared to pay the price. It only needs
five minutes steaming to bring out the natural sweet
and succulent flavour, which is bursting with vitamins
and nutrients.
This has to be one of my favourite soups as it’s still
earthy enough with its leek and potato base to warm
our bones, but with the purple sprouting broccoli it
gives us hope that spring is just around the corner.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli & Leek Soup
Ingredients:
500g (1lb) Purple sprouting broccoli, tough stalk
ends removed.
2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
2 onions, peeled and sliced
2 leeks, washed and sliced
900ml (1 1/2 pint) veg stock
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method:
1. In a large saucepan, fry the onion in a little oil
for 10 minutes without colouring, then add the
sliced leeks and sauté for another 5 minutes over a
medium heat.
2. Add the veg stock, potatoes and seasoning, bring
to the boil the simmer for 20 minutes.
3. Roughly chop the broccoli then add to the soup
and simmer for 10 minutes.
4. Leave to cool slightly then liquidise in a food
blender until smooth. Return to the pan, check the
seasoning then serve.
I like to serve this here at the restaurant with some
leeks, finely sliced and quickly fried in a little olive oil
then scattered on top of the soup before serving. Or
for a really decadent touch, you could add a slice of
creamy dolcelatte cheese on top and place under the
grill for 30 seconds.
Delicious!
10 St Patrick’s Day
Calendar Girls 11
Celebrate St Patrick’s Day
Saturday March 17th
Saint Patrick’s Day is an annual feast day which
celebrates Saint Patrick (circa 385–461 AD), one of
the patron saints of Ireland. St Patrick is traditionally
associated with the Shamrock plant, which he used
to explain the concept of the Trinity. The value of St
Patrick doesn’t really come from the historical details,
but from the inspiration of a man who returned to
the country where he had been a child slave, in order
to spread the message of Christ.
Saint Patrick’s Day is generally celebrated each year
on March 17th (however, in 2008 it was celebrated on
15th March to avoid a clash with Palm Sunday), which
this year is next Saturday.
In many parts of the world, namely USA, Britain
and Australia, huge crowds of people with no Irish
connections proclaim themselves as ‘Irish for a
day’ to celebrate St Paddy’s Day, usually with the
consumption of Irish alcoholic beverages, food, and
wearing green-coloured clothing.
To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, Reflect’s resident Chef,
Neil Walker, (who can be found at ‘Appetite’ in Abbey
Sports & Leisure Club, on Slater Street in Leicester)
has created another delicious recipe for you to try
your hand at…
“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate St Patrick’s
Day than with a steaming bowl of Irish stew, a pint of
Guinness and a thick slice of homemade soda bread
- still slightly warm from being baked. Although I’m
not going to give you the recipe for making a barrel of
Guinness or Irish stew (otherwise known as Stobhach
Gaelach), the following recipe for soda bread is quick
and easy to make.
No kneading of the dough for hours, or proving in the
airing cupboard until doubled in size etc. In fact, I’m
sure most of you reading this now could go to your store
cupboard and knock this up, served on the table within
30 minutes! The only downside is it only lasts for a
couple of days, but I’ve stuck a couple of slices under the
grill a few days later and served with some scrambled
eggs on top, with a dash of Worcester sauce, and it’s just
as appetising.”
Ingredients:
250g plain flour plus extra for dusting
5g salt
2 tsp baking powder
150ml milk
Method:
1. Preheat oven to 200c/gas mark 6.
2. Combine all ingredients in a bowl to make a dough.
Knead briefly and shape into rough rounds then
flatten slightly. Dust all over with flour then place on
a baking tray.
3. Cut a deep cross into the loaf and then stab all over
with the tip of a knife and place in the oven for 20-25
minutes. The bottom of the loaf should sound hollow
when tapped on the bottom.
4. Place on a wire rack for a while then best eaten
warm.
Did You Know?
• Saint Patrick wasn’t Irish – he was
actually British (maybe even Scottish);
Irish raiders took him from Britain
aged 16 and sold him as a slave. He
escaped after six years.
• It may be a good story but Saint
Patrick didn’t drive the snakes out of
Ireland - it’s unlikely there were ever
any snakes in Ireland. It’s believed
that the snake may be a reference to
serpent (the symbol of evil) and the
‘driving out’ a reference to Patrick’s
mission to rid Ireland of pagan
influences.
• He played a major role in converting
the Irish to Christianity
planned…
the screenplay of his smash-hit Miramax film for
Go Camping Crazy
Dornoch Caravan & Camp Park -
The Perfect Spot For Your Camping Holiday
Are you watching the pennies or looking for a greener
getaway? If so, the UK is the place to stay for a holiday.
Providing couples and families of all ages with a cheap
and cheerful, fun-filled break, with no passport required,
caravan and camping holidays have made a major
comeback in recent years.
As a self-catering, no frills alternative to a package holiday, providing flexibility
and freedom, camping and caravanning breaks offer the chance of an enjoyable
holiday that won’t break the bank. In recent years, the economic climate has made
us all more aware of every penny we spend, so to ensure you and your loved ones
can still enjoy quality time together on an annual holiday, opt for a caravan or
camping break.
Overlooked by many thanks to stereotypical ideas, such as cramped caravans,
soggy sleeping bags and the infamous shiver-provoking showers, it’s a well-kept
secret by keen caravanners that they’re not as behind with technology as one
might think. Today, many caravans come generously equipped with DVD players,
Sky, Freeview, double beds, toilets and private shower cubicles. Not only that but
even tents can now enjoy all the creature comforts of home thanks to electrical
hook ups - whatever you require (be it hair straighteners or proper lighting) to
ensure your holiday has all the creature comforts of home, can be catered for
when booking your traditional British holiday.
a caravan or camping holiday presents us with an opportunity to reduce our
carbon footprint! It has been proved that holidaying within the UK is the greener
way to travel. Around 600,000kg of C02 per aircraft is produced on a short haul
flight to Europe; this is a substantial amount in comparison to towing a caravan
400 miles by car, which only produces 161kg. If my calculations are correct, this
allows 3000 of us to go on a caravan holiday before we even reach that of the
short haul flight (http://www.busyoutdoors.com/caravanning_articles/Green_
Caravanning.html)! In addition to reducing our CO2 emissions, we can continue to
raise awareness, shaping the minds of our future generations to think green.
With locations up and down the country, caravanning and camping offer no
restrictions and with so much choice, you can go as near or far as you like. With
a camping holiday, you can get back to basics with campfire cooking and enjoy
the simple life. Kids can help with setting up tents and they’ll love the experience
of sleeping under canvas, as well as getting involved in the great outdoors. Kidfriendly
campsites usually offer some entertainment, but they’re guaranteed to
make new friends wherever you choose to go.
Still not tempted? For the more mature couples who are put off by the noise
pollution caravanning might hinder, we suggest taking a trip out of peak season.
With the inviting great outdoors beckoning on your doorstep, you can get close
with nature in a more peaceful, relaxing environment. You may find yourself
taking up a new hobby or rekindling an old past time - ever fancied yourself as a
bird watcher? Need to dig up your old rambling boots?
Boasting so much freedom and the chance to experience something new, it’s
easy to see why camping and caravanning holidays are back in vogue.
Falls of Shin and a few miles further on visit the Ferrycroft Visitors Centre
near Lairg and experience an audio-visual journey into the past to
ago.
The area boasts numerous castles of the Highlands including the
world-famous Dunrobin Castle near Golspie, the Ancestral home
of the Duke’s of Sutherland. This fairytale castle overlooks the sea
and contains a magnificent collection of furniture, silverware, and
tapestries. The castle is surrounded by some outstandingly beautiful
formal gardens. Also hidden in the gardens is a very unusual small
museum. Dunrobin is a must-see for every visitor to the Highlands.
Travel south from Dornoch Caravan and Camp Park to explore Loch
Ness on a boat trip or drive around its shores visiting the pretty villages
of Dores, Fort Augustus and Drumnadrochit, which is home to the
Nessie visitor centres.
A day trip to Isle of Skye is always a must if you have time. There are
many things to see including Dunvegan Castle, Talisker Distillery and
the unforgettable Cuillin mountains which dominate the Island. Before
crossing the bridge to Skye, make a stop at picturesque Eilean Donan
Castle.
Beauty, ever changing and thrilling to explore.
The campsite will take many people back to
wildflower meadows, which our grandparents
took for granted.
The owner, John Sankey, wants to preserve
the old meadows and has planted hundreds
of trees to encourage the wildlife and provide
shade for the future. Birds are abundant, in
fact, it is a birdwatchers’ paradise! Owls can be
heard and seen at night.
Chemicals and artificial fertilisers are not
used on Brow Farm Campsite. The wildflower
Covering 152,033 square miles, Great Britain has an abundance of places to discover and explore. A holiday
within the British Isles would allow you to not only avoid the stress of going abroad, but also discover some of
the magical, mystical and down-right spectacular places on this place we call home.
The stunning, unspoilt scenery and wealth of
attractions to entertain the whole family make the
Isle of Wight the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing
break any time of the year. The minute your family
step onto the ferry, a sense of relaxation, excitement
and fun overcome you. For a stress free, fun family
holiday, this stunning Island is the only place to
consider holidaying this summer.
Walking
With such spectacular scenery, the best way to explore the
Island, and get out into the fresh, unpolluted air, is on foot.
The Island has over 500 miles of carefully maintained and
well signposted rights of way, so you’ve no excuse not to
spend a day exploring some of the UK’s most unforgettable
scenery. In fact, the Island has its own Walking Festival every
May.
Beaches
With over 60 miles of coastline, half of which is ‘Heritage
Coast’, the Isle of Wight has some of the country’s best
beaches, perfect for building sandcastles, swimming in the
sea and generally watching the world go by.
There are currently 13 award-winning beaches on the Island,
including Ryde Beach, Compton Bay, Yaverland Beach
and, Reflect favourite, Shanklin Beach which forms part of
Sandown Bay. Not only is Shanklin Beach only a short walk
away from the centre of town, during the summer season,
it is machine cleaned and litter picked on a daily basis,
ensuring it’s as safe as a beach can be for you and your
family. In fact, it is so clean that large amounts of seaweed
are removed and taken to local farmers for use as compost.
The Great Outdoors
Approximately half of this historic and diverse island has
been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
mostly in the south and west, the outdoors really be seen to
be believed.
There are plenty of activities for the adrenaline junkie in
you to enjoy, from traditional windsurfing, sailing and
paragliding to the more unusual tree climbing and llama
trekking.
Visiting anglers are very well catered for on the Island with
64 miles of coastline available for sea fishing or numerous
ponds, reservoirs and streams for the Freshwater angler.
If golf is your thing, there are eight super golf courses
awaiting you on the Isle of Wight. Let breathtaking views
and fresh sea air carry you through your round, which can
be energetic or easy-going - just as you choose.
Cowes
Many see the town of Cowes as the home of yachting,
hosting the famous Cowes Week sailing festival each
summer. This festival consists mainly of organised yacht
racing, by both dedicated racing yachts and a series of
‘class’ events catering for the wide variety of non-dedicated
yachts. This yachting weekend has something for all the
family, whether you’re a hard-core yachter or a total novice.
Five Valleys Cottages
A wide choice of self-catering cottages and
Ten miles west of Cirencester, Stroud is
at the centre of the Five Valleys and at the
edge of the Cotswolds. Here, the steeply
wooded valleys wind their way back into
the limestone of the Cotswold escarpment,
providing unexpected views and woodland
walks. The familiar Cotswold landscape of
stone walls, rolling farmland and villages of
golden stone gives way to the exhilarating
high commons of Minchinhampton,
Rodborough and Selsley, with views across
the Severn to the Forest of Dean and the
Welsh mountains beyond, while the valleys
hide lakes and beechwoods. Not surprising
that this is known as the ‘undiscovered
Cotswolds’.
A survey carried out by car-makers Vauxhall found that, on average, Britons have visited only
2% of Britain’s 1,200 towns and cities; so this week, we’d like to encourage you to enjoy a
break in an area of great Britain that you’ve never visited before, whether it’s north, south,
east, or west.
Towards the end of 2011, VisitBritain predicted that in 2012 Great Britain should attract
30.7 million visitors (spending £17.6 billion in the process), in part thanks to the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee and London 2012, not to mention the numerous other great events taking
place across the country this year.
In fact, Britain’s image overseas has improved significantly over the last 12 months, driven
by better perceptions of British culture, its people and its appeal as a tourist destination. The
findings, published in the latest Anholt-GFK Roper Nation Brands Index (NBI), noted that
the UK now overtakes France on the overall rankings to become the third most admired
country globally - now one place higher than it was in 2010 - positioning itself as one of the
strongest and most well-rounded nations in the world.
Surrounded by ocean, the British Isles have an abundance of beach resorts, coastal paths,
and sea life all waiting to be discovered. Beach holidays are a great way to re-live your own
childhood seaside holidays, rekindling fond memories of donkey rides and amusement
arcades.
Situated with the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire is a haven for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts;
in fact its countryside is considered by many as quintessentially English. A must see when
visiting this stunning county is Gloucester’s spectacular cathedral. Described as northern
Europe’s sixth most beautiful building, Gloucester Cathedral is located in the heart of the
city. Features include the glazed fan-vaulted cloisters, the monks’ lavatorium, the medieval
glass of the great east window, and the tombs of King Edward II and Robert Duke of
Normandy.
If you’re looking for a peaceful and laid-back break away from the hustle and bustle of
everyday life Cheshire is the place. The largely unspoilt rural landscape is teeming with
quaint market towns and villages, whilst the City of Chester provides excellent shopping,
evening entertainment, restaurants serving delicious dishes and an array of attractions for
the whole family.
If you’d prefer to soak up some sun but want to stay away from the more popular, wellknown
European resorts, Reflect would like to recommend Rhodes. Situated in in the
eastern Aegean Sea, Rhodes boasts 220Km of coastline and a middle climate that just begs
to be enjoyed.

Hunter’s Yard
Few things in life can be as relaxing as holidaying on water, as exploring Britain’s 2,200 miles of
canals and rivers allows you to take life at a slower pace. With hundreds of miles of waterways
to explore and some of the most beautiful and peaceful scenery the British countryside has to
offer, it’s no wonder canal holidays are growing in popularity.
In fact, research carried out last year by Towergate Bakers
Insurance found that from the five most popular holidays
enjoyed by Brits, a canal boat holiday came in at a surprising
fifth place. With this type of holiday being described as ‘the
fastest way to slow down’, it’s easy to see why so many Brits
are opting for this kind of holiday.
Far removed from the pace of modern life, a narrowboat
holiday is the perfect way to unwind. Making your way
slowly through the British countryside in your floating
home you have the freedom to go as you please. No rush
(as speeds are limited to 4mph), no pressure, just mile after
mile of beautiful canals (originally created to transport
goods across the country) to explore. There’s always a new
view to experience around the next bend, something new
to discover and something for the kids to explore; it’s a truly
relaxing holiday.
Britain’s canals offer the unique chance to see parts of
villages, towns and cities that cannot be seen by any other
mode of transport. There are also numerous attractions
along the way to stop and enjoy including museums, shops
and pubs.
An abundance of wildlife can be seen along the canal,
including beautiful swans, families of ducks swimming
together, frogs perched on water lilies, and hundreds of fish.
Why not see if you can catch your dinner by fishing as you
chug along, but don’t worry if the fish gets the better of you
– there’s plenty of places to eat along the way.
There are numerous companies providing barge hire, with
accommodation ranging from basic two-man boats to large
family barges with all the creature comforts. If you’ve really
caught the boating bug, then you could invest in your own
barge so you can have a weekend away whenever the mood
takes you.
The UK’s premier waterways event takes place at the
picturesque Crick Marina (just off Junction 18 of the M1)
from 2nd – 5th June. The Crick Boat Show and Waterways
Festival is more than just boats – it offers an action packed,
great value, family day out, and it’s right on your doorstep.
More Than
Just A Holiday
Narrowboat holidays have been
described as the fastest way to slow
down, so it’s not surprising to see how
popular they’ve become in recent years
as we all try to manage the stress of
demanding work, and family, lives.
Established over 40 years ago, Anglo
Welsh Waterway Holidays provide
narrowboat holidays for all the family.
The company was taken over in 2000 by
Robert Lawrence who has spent the last
12 years investing a lot of time, effort
and money into refurbishing the fleet,
of 150 weekly hire boats and 10 day hire
boats, to a higher standard.
Operating from 11 locations around
England and Wales, 10 of which are
on Britain’s canals, one of which is on
the River Thames, Anglo Welsh cover a
section of Britain’s 2,000 miles of inland
waterways, in numerous stunning locals
that beg to be explored. Robert told
Reflect: “Our eleven bases are situated in
delightful areas of England and Wales;
they offer all the rural tranquillity you
could ask for, combined with the hustle
and bustle of quaint market towns, as well
as the history and heritage of the ancient
cities of Oxford and Bath.”
Anglo Welsh’s fleet is constantly being
upgraded as boats are refurbished
and replaced with brand new vessels.
The fleet of 150 offers a diverse mix
to accommodate every type of party,
including a cosy two-berth for a couple,
a four or six-berth for a family and eight,
nine, ten and 12-berth boats – these
all come in a choice of Cruiser and
Semi-Traditional stern arrangements
for a fantastic canal holiday. Robert
added: “Lots of people are surprised to
discover just how modern 21st Century
narrowboats actually are; they come
fully equipped with hot and cold running
water, flushing toilets, central heating,
showers or even small baths, sprung
mattresses and fridges are available on
every boat. We include a full tank of fuel in
all our hires, which would keep you going
for two weeks at a steady pace. We’re one
of the few large boat hire companies to do
this and customers actually save anything
up to £100 by choosing us over one of our
competitors.”
If you’re new to narrowboats and
are worried about a holiday on the
water, don’t worry. Anglo Welsh have
a number of boats to hire for the day
to give you and your family a taste
of life cruising the inland waterways.
Robert added: “We also ensure everyone
completes a nationally accredited
handover procedure by a qualified
member of staff on the fundamentals
of operating a narrowboat and water
etiquette. This is to ensure everyone sets
off on their holiday or day out confident,
comfortable and safe.”
A Message From Queen Elizabeth
Today, as I mark 60 years as your Queen, I am writing to
thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement
that you have given to me and Prince Philip over these
years and to tell you how deeply moved we have been
to receive so many kind messages about the Diamond
Jubilee.
In this special year, as I dedicate myself anew to your
service, I hope we will all be reminded of the power of
togetherness and the convening strength of family,
friendship and good neighbourliness, examples of which I
have been fortunate to see throughout my reign and which
my family and I look forward to seeing in many forms as
we travel throughout the United Kingdom and the wider
Commonwealth.
I hope also that this Jubilee year will be a time to give
thanks for the great advances that have been made since
1952 and to look forward to the future with clear head and
warm heart as we join together in our celebrations.
I send my sincere good wishes to you all.
All Saints, Horsey
Horsey is a precious jewel of a
church, tucked away in a quiet
prayerful.
All Saints has been newly rethatched
Bell ringers had noticed more recently
difficulty in ringing, and all possible
adjustments were made. The conclusion is
that the bells will become ‘unringable’ and
the tower will become unsafe. Estimates
by Bell Founders for refurbishment and
strengthening have been received of
£170,000. To date £89,000 has been raised
in an attempt to preserve 250 years of
change bell ringing. John Billett chairs the
Appeal Committee, which is now applying
to Charitable Trusts.
Thurning:
St Andrew
Thurning is a small, charming church
set in a rural hamlet. The church has
changed little in the 700 years since
built. The nave and the tower date
from about 1300 and the north aisle
was probably built some 200 years
later. The Church is complete with
a three-decker pulpit and dark oak
fittings including box pews, a donation
by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
With many years experience, gained by filming
at most locations in the Cotswolds and across
Gloucestershire, company director, Howard
Williams, together with his experienced crew,
provides a lasting memory of your wedding day.
Howard told Reflect: “We’ve been filming weddings for a
number of years; I ask that interested parties give me a call or
drop me an email to discuss what they want recorded so we
can create a package to suit them. I pride myself on capturing
the event in its entirety, in a way that truly reflects the day.”
For wedding day photography, Cotswold Wedding Video
& Photography use professional digital equipment and
provide a selection of formal and informal shots of the
happy couple with relatives and friends, so that after the
fun and excitement of the day, the magic moments can be
re-lived over and over again. You should also remember
that the DVDs and photo albums produced will be
cherished not only by the bride and groom, but also by
those who cannot be there to share the day.
On your wedding day, Cotswold Wedding Video &
Photography usually use either twin camera coverage for
the whole day to capture all of the action or twin cameras
for the ceremony and single camera for highlights of the
photocall, reception and rest of day. However, the choice
is yours. Separate camera coverage can be provided of the
bride’s preparations, family and guest interviews, special
sequence of the bride and groom in a chosen location or
reportage of the day, to name a few suggestions. Once
filmed, the footage is processed using the state-of-the-art
editing equipment. The finished product is supplied in
presentation cases with individually designed covers.
In the past, Cotswold Wedding Video & Photography have
filmed a wide range of weddings, from low budget to lavish
dos, in every type of venue from Register Offices, private
marquees, cathedrals and luxury hotels. In addition, they
have undertaken a great variety of filming projects from
services attended by Her Majesty the Queen, theatre and
dance productions, instructional and marketing projects,
corporate events and travelogues.
Howard told us about filming the Maundy Thursday
service at Gloucester Cathedral in April 2003: “The service
was attended by the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen and
the filming set up was very intricate and had to remain out
of sight. In order to film we had to get permission from the
Cathedral administration and Buckingham Palace. We had to
arrange our positions and movement with the security team
and no cameras were allowed to be visible to members of the
Royal party. We had a camera outside the Cathedral, which
captured the arrival of the Royal helicopter, journey to the
Cathedral and departure. There were a further seven cameras
inside the Cathedral - the organ gallery, pulpit, on the steps
and in the press gallery at the West End of the Nave. It was
a wonderful experience to be part of this event and I’m really
looking forward to the coverage of the Diamond Jubilee events
to be screened on TV in the coming months.”
As well as wedding day photography, Howard is also happy
to film any special event, including parties, anniversaries,
retirements, baptisms and confirmations. He also happily
accepts commissions, filming an array of events such as
dramas and musicals, concerts and festivals, sports and
equestrian events, documentaries, living archives, training
and education and corporate events. Recent commissions
include:
• Filming at the International Air Tattoo, which is held
annually in July at Fairford, Gloucestershire.
• MOD training videos of equipment in use at airfields
worldwide.
• A general interest film about RNAS Yeovilton and the
Fleet Air Museum.
• Aero club displays and events around Britain.
• British Connemara Pony Society seminars in
presentation of ponies and riders at events, dressage
displays and stallion parade.
• Training film about riding technique and animal behaviour.
• Eventing in the Cotswolds
• Numerous productions for music and drama societies
across the Cotswolds area.
television stations.
• Group travel abroad for schools, special interest parties
and national holiday providers.
• Video relay to large screen(s) in concert halls, churches
and Gloucester cathedral
It’s not hard to see why Reflect have selected Cotswold
