Council Plan Sustainable Water Management Plan Vision The Nillumbik Sustainable Water Management Plan is guided by the vision, strategic objectives and strategies that have been outlined in the Council Plan 2007-2011. Vision Council’s vision for the Shire of Nillumbik is characterised by: • engaged, healthy and culturally vibrant communities with strong attachments to their local areas and to Nillumbik as a whole • strong environmental values and outcomes which conserve what is important about Nillumbik and deliver a sustainable Green Wedge • well-managed community assets which meet peoples’ needs • an economic base that delivers prosperity to Nillumbik and allows its council to deliver required outcomes. 3.2 Open space Maintain and develop open spaces including parks, reserves, roadsides and recreational trails which meet the needs of the community now and into the future and demonstrate environmental best practice. 3.3 Community facilities and buildings Manage and maintain the upgrade, renewal and expansion of community and recreational facilities and assets to meet current and future needs while ensuring ecologically sustainable best practice. 4.1 Good governance and community engagement Continue to improve decision-making processes which are democratic, policy based and allow our community to participate. 4.2 Partnerships Strengthen existing relationships and create new partnerships to maximise Council’s potential for responding to community issues. Influence Council will have a positive influence in the community, particularly in terms of environmental management. Council is committed to leading the way in sustainable environmental management. As major purchasers of goods and services, Council will influence industry by including water efficiency as a criteria when making purchases. Leadership Council will lead by example and demonstrate to the community and industry a proactive approach to sustainable water management. Advocacy Council will advocate for better broad scale benefits and consistency in water conservation ensuring that new projects such as sewer mining, local treatment systems, regional approaches to water treatment and reuse provide sustainable strategic outcomes. Awareness and education Council will work in partnership with Yarra Valley Water and Melbourne Water to establish, develop and facilitate distribution of education material and information relating to sustainable water management. Community workshops, industry forums and public education campaigns will provide effective opportunities for Council to facilitate community education to better manage and use water resources. Planning Council will play a significant role in new commercial and residential developments. Under state and local planning provisions, Council will seek Water Sensitive Urban Designs for new subdivisions and industrial estates. Council officers will work closely with developers and environment agencies to ensure that new developments embrace sustainable water use. Strategic Objectives 1.2 Resource conservation Practice and encourage the sustainable management of resources (air, water, energy), to reduce waste and pollution including carbon emissions/ greenhouse gasses and enhance biodiversity. 4.6 Statutory requirements Ensure we meet our statutory requirements and identify opportunities to improve these processes.
