In retrospect some <strong>of</strong> the partners recognized that their concerns about the apparent<br />
‘corporatization’ <strong>of</strong> the partnership were bound up with their more personal concerns<br />
about the previous management team who were try<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g about the changes.<br />
Presented with a different rhetoric, at a different time, by a different management<br />
team, these moves towards a more ‘Corporate’ style <strong>of</strong> <strong>governance</strong> were viewed as<br />
less threaten<strong>in</strong>g and to some extent an <strong>in</strong>evitable consequence <strong>of</strong> rapid and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>itable growth.<br />
Discussion and conclusions<br />
As argued earlier, the exist<strong>in</strong>g literature on <strong>governance</strong> <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional service firms<br />
presents a variety <strong>of</strong> dichotomized <strong>model</strong>s which, whether focus<strong>in</strong>g on legal form or<br />
organizational archetype, ignore the more complex variety <strong>of</strong> forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>governance</strong><br />
prevalent with<strong>in</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essional service firm sector. In reality a pr<strong>of</strong>essional service<br />
firm may adopt <strong>multi</strong>ple forms <strong>of</strong> <strong>governance</strong> over time. The study therefore asked:<br />
how does <strong>governance</strong> change over time as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional service firm <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
<strong>in</strong> size and complexity?<br />
The study developed a <strong>multi</strong>-<strong>stage</strong> <strong>model</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>governance</strong> <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional service<br />
firms. It emphasised that this process <strong>of</strong> change is not necessarily sequential, l<strong>in</strong>ear,<br />
or <strong>in</strong>evitable, and that shifts <strong>in</strong> the balance <strong>of</strong> power can be reversed <strong>in</strong> response to<br />
