I felt very sad about the bid because I felt that the dream had gone. We were<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g to become part <strong>of</strong> a big group. But I did feel excitement about the money<br />

too…I had never thought about sell<strong>in</strong>g the firm to a third party. I had assumed we<br />

would go for a management buy-out. (Founder – Margaret)<br />

The founders negotiated <strong>in</strong> private with the bidder (and did not <strong>in</strong>volve the Board <strong>in</strong><br />

their discussions). They were concerned about unsettl<strong>in</strong>g staff until they had reached<br />

an agreement with the bidd<strong>in</strong>g firm and called a meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> all staff to announce their<br />

decision.<br />

The atmosphere was electric. People were absolutely stunned. (Board Member)<br />

It was rather a shock. It was the first time we had been TOLD that someth<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g to happen rather than consulted. (Secretary)<br />

There was a sense <strong>of</strong> betrayal. I th<strong>in</strong>k people thought – ‘Ha. They are just go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Over the next n<strong>in</strong>e months, three senior staff resigned, fee <strong>in</strong>come plummeted, the<br />

acquir<strong>in</strong>g firm withdrew its <strong>of</strong>fer, and four staff were made redundant. At an <strong>of</strong>fsite<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>g the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g staff gathered to consider the future <strong>of</strong> the company.<br />

It was an astonish<strong>in</strong>g and emotional event. Feel<strong>in</strong>gs ran very high. People cried.<br />

People stormed out. A lot <strong>of</strong> stuff was processed that needed to be got<br />
