Ken’s Korner - March 2013
Fellow Nomads,What a magnificent day!! The
morning dawned bright and clear with hardly a drop
of wind and stayed that way most of the day.
Amazing how Mother Nature's gustiness seems to
be somewhat subdued the further one journeys
“inland”. Marvellous weather for what is hopefully
going to be a marvellous round of golf.
My partner on this day was Kenny Buchner, Captain of Uitenhage,
an accomplished golfer in his own right and whose son is playing
some magnificent golf on the Junior circuit. We didn't quite
manage to beat our opponents Dave Koen and Denis Byron on the
day, though we did make a fair run at the honours down the home
straight. Too late to break the stranglehold, however, and we
wound up parting with our hard earned cash.
Thanks must go to Marius Ferreira and his staff at Uitenhage for
the manner in which they accommodated us on the day. The
course was in great nick and although a little slow, the greens ran
true. Halfway House presented us with a bit of a challenge, but in
the end everyone managed to get through with some form of
sustenance. It was suggested that the girls might want to look at
presenting a smaller variety of choice and this suggestion was
relayed to the hierarchy.
Despite the halfway hold-up, the field managed to move quite
quickly and prize-giving started a little earlier than usual. My
thanks to the ladies for getting everything completed so smoothly,
to our Fines Master David Nicholas for an entertaining and
rewarding fines session and to the Vice and Junior-Vice for making
the prize-giving timeous and efficient, affording everyone the
opportunity to socialise after the match.
My personal thanks to Andre Weitz for his hospitality and the
manner in which hosted us at the prize-giving with the snacks and
table layout; it made for an intimate and congenial end to a great
day; thanks, Andre
Our 2013 Ebotse Nationals is just around the corner and I'd like to
wish the team well in their endeavours to capture the Bert Hunt
Trophy. To Michael, Greg, Brian, Dennis, Trevor, Nick, both

Stuarts, David, Ian, Dave, Pat, Marcelle, Cobus, Bruce, Des and
Benjamin - the best of luck; and to Mike, Mark, John, Ryan and
Martin have a great Players tournament. No matter what the day
brings, enjoy yourself!!
Also on the horizon is our annual challenge against Border; the
Rough Ryder and Frontier Trophy Challenges at Fish River and
Royal Port Alfred respectively the first week-end of April, so hone
those skills so that we can retain the Frontier in the Eastern Cape. I
am looking forward to a great turn-out for the weekend.
Our next monthly game (1st round Gary Player Knock Out) is at
Walmer Country Club on the 21st April. See you all there!!.

Fellow Nomads.
Uitenhage Golf Club welcomed us for our March game, a final
warm-up for those of us going off to Nationals at Ebotse.
The course was in its usual good condition and with the ball running so far on
the fairways, the ever present bushes gladly gobbled up several balls on the
day. The greens were smooth and true with some players struggling to find
the hole – not the courses fault. I thank my fourball of Rob Griffiths and
Dave Drimmie, who gladly contributed some cash to my ever steady partner
Dave Pearson and myself. We had a great day out there and obviously Dave
took a lot of tips from our game as he went on to win the Eastern Cape
Player prize at Nationals. Well done Dave.
Well done to the winners on the day, with some really good scores coming
through. Prize giving was held shortly after the last players came off the
course so well done ladies and Captains on getting matters dealt with in good
time. Nice to see that some of the players stayed behind for a few drinks
in the pub after the formalities had ended.
At this stage, we look forward to our upcoming Away Tour, to Fish River Sun
and Royal Port Alfred Golf courses for the annual Rough Rider and Frontier
Trophy competitions against our neighbours, Border. We hope to see most
of you making the trip which is always loads of
fun. Unfortunately, we were not able to bring
back the Bert Hunt Trophy from Nationals but
we did succeed in coming fourth nationally which
is a good result in the build-up to our Home
Nationals at Port Elizabeth golf Club in March
2014. Well done Team!
We look forward to seeing you all at Walmer
Country Club on 21 April, which is also the
closing date for the first round of the GPKO
competition.

“Tales” from Long Faced JVC
Game number 3 of the year.
We played at Uitenhage Golf club, in pretty good
conditions, and the course was in good shape too.
Unfortunately there were lots of milk drinkers this
month, so we ran out of milk, but NOT THE WHISKY. Anyway lesson
learnt. More milk will be available next month so you'd better drink it.
Now for the Tale...
I was paired up with Howard Lipman, who thankfully couldn't give me any
chirps about my kit or shaving. The enemy provided was new kid on the
block Stuart Reid and his guest Mark Grimsell. Gentlemen, it was a
pleasure playing with you, and I thank you for the extra coffers in my
pocket.
Coming up shortly is Nationals, so let hope we can bring home the Bert
Hunt. Personally I think we'll come 4th, but who knows. Then on the
weekend of the 6th April we have the Rough Rider and Frontier against the
Border boys. Entry forms were available, but by the time this gets printed,
entries will be closed. I thank you all for entering, and hopefully you can
give me some pointers for what we can do better in the future. It is Borders
turn to set up the Altar and host, so I am
very pleased about that.
The competition letter last month was
the letter 'A' but in the process of being
sent out the boldness in the font was
removed. The second letter is the letter
'E'. Remember to read my tales each
month to get the letters and a chance to
win the bottle of Bells.

A reminder to members of important information and upcoming events
Late withdrawal from Monthly and Special Games
-members are requested to notify Jean of their intended withdrawal before 17h00 on a Friday
before a game or be liable for the green fees. NO MEMBERS may enter or withdraw on behalf
of other members!
Payments
-Would all Nomads doing EFT or bank deposits please use your name as a reference.

Divisional Trophies
-Those members who have been victorious at a monthly game are urged to return their divisional
trophies to the Equipment Officer before the next game or incur a R200.00 fine
Tee-Off Times
-the Starter is struggling to ensure that the field gets off the tee box on time at our various games
-we urge you to arrive in due time at the respective courses, bearing in mind all that must be done
before even teeing up your ball on the 1st
Early Leavers (You will be fined!!)
You will be charged R20.00 for apologies at Registration -
R40 for apologies after the game and R100 for not apologising at all.
