<strong>Meeting</strong> called to order: 4:20 PM<br />

President’s Remarks:<br />

1. Thank you again for your commitment and for always striving to do more/better.<br />

We are privileged to have each other.<br />

Gave thanks for all the help thus far. “When this bond passes, it will be a great help for you and will make your<br />

jobs easier.” All voters need to bring a spouse and a friend or two, and this will pass. The script for the phone<br />

bank was shared for suggestions. A sign up sheet passed for those willing to put a sign up in their yard. It was<br />

also requested for 1 person per building to assist at phone bank. School <strong>Board</strong> members will be walking the<br />

neighborhoods to make sure people know about the bond. A hat was passed for more donations for Vote Yes<br />

Lake Orion.<br />

Secretary’s Report:<br />

1. January minutes accepted as presented.<br />

Treasurer’s Report:<br />

1. Tax Prep: Go into paperless pay to print off copy/total of your last year’s <strong>LOEA</strong> dues.<br />

2. January Treasurer’s report passed as presented.<br />

MEA UniServ Director, Bill Curtis:<br />

1. Again, stay informed on what’s happening. Some State Legislators have suggested one state‐wide pay scale,<br />

one state‐wide benefit plan, to consolidate administrators, pension plans… READ THE PAPER! Stay in close<br />

contact with your elected representatives.<br />

2. MEA membership is down. Bill Curtis is secure, but may have more groups to service.<br />

3. The MEA Bargaining Conference was pushed back a day due to the weather last week.<br />

CMC arrived one day early to craft their proposal for administration.

1. Pine Tree attended, short meeting, done by 9:00 PM. Some topics: Awards to Leadership students, the<br />

Cut‐a‐Thon at Glitz on Sunday to benefit Special Olympics, Two billboards going up courtesy of the Detroit<br />

Lions for Coach of the Year, Chris Bell. (East side of M‐24 south of Silverbell & on I‐75) Jenna Bendle receives<br />

LO’s Teacher of the Year nomination. Discussion regarding keeping Marion Ginopolis on as Superintendent<br />

for the next two years. Next week is Principal’s Week.<br />

1. Cancelled Monday 2‐7‐11. Scheduled to meet again: Friday, February 25, 2011.<br />

1. Meets Spring, 2011<br />

Michigan’s A+ Agenda discussed underlying theme/message: Teachers ‐ Take BACK the profession! Be positive!<br />

Public Relations<br />

OLD BUSINESS:<br />

1. Being a good PR person for the public schools is ALL of our jobs!<br />

Membership‐ E‐mail Theresa Laba AND Joanne Purdon of any new members, name changes, returns from leave, etc.<br />

Shared Teaching‐ Requests due by March 1, 2011<br />

Return from Leave‐ Letters due by March 1, 2011<br />

Teacher Certification: Went live (for some districts) on February 8, 2011; Will go “live for all districts in April 2011<br />

LOCS Bond‐ February 22, 2011:<br />

1. If this bond fails, the board will have make reductions.<br />

2. Absentee ballots available!! This vote occurs during our winter break.<br />

LOCS School <strong>Board</strong> Election‐ May 3, 2011: <strong>LOEA</strong> Screening & Recommendation sessions scheduled for March 8 th &<br />

March 14th. E‐mail Joanne Purdon if interested in participating.<br />

Tax Policy Event: Thursday, January 20, 2011 and was attended by Jeffrey Faber‐ Emphasizes that we should be wary of<br />

salary comparisons when our level of education is not taken into consideration.<br />

NEW BUSINESS:<br />

AFLAC Presentations: Michelle Ulrych available for individual meetings, as well as next TUESDAY, 2‐15‐11 at 3:00 in the<br />

high school Kiva


Retirement Workshops: MEA/NOCA Offices 3‐22‐11 and 3‐23‐11; Want to know how to buy years? Could you retire at<br />

46? Good info to be gotten‐ not just for retirees. However, if you are planning to retire in the next 4‐5 years, you should<br />

attend!<br />

Major Education Reform Event: March 7, 2011 in Novi Registration offered through Thursday for MEA members first.<br />

<strong>LOEA</strong> Camperships/Scholarship: Each year the <strong>LOEA</strong> gives out $3000 to students. $1,000 goes to a senior who intends<br />

to pursue a career as an educator. These applications involve an essay and transcripts and are available in the high<br />

school counseling office. $2,000 are given out to students for summer camps. Applications dispersed to building rep’s to<br />

be handed out selectively by an <strong>LOEA</strong> member to the student. All app’s due to M. Schabel at Paint Creek by April 29,<br />

2011 and must be COMPLETELY filled out, with program/ camp registration/ pamphlet attached. Checks to be mailed<br />

by May 12, 2011, so if a student needs to register for a camp prior to then, the <strong>LOEA</strong> member should advise them to do<br />

so. If more applications are needed in your building, you may make copies, but please highlight the areas that are<br />

highlighted on the original. The committee will not consider any applications that do not adhere to the guidelines<br />

highlighted.<br />

MEA/Region 7 Elections Committee Update: Marie Okopski and Cindy Williams‐ any upcoming <strong>LOEA</strong> elections will be of<br />

the “green bucket” variety, until our <strong>LOEA</strong> bylaws can be changed to reflect the desire to hold on‐line voting.<br />

ISSUES AND CONCERNS:<br />

Facility Usage: The district owns the building. You cannot prevent them from using your classroom for after school<br />

activities. Lock up your stuff!<br />

Sub Shortage: Still exists. Encourage members to put in for planning time lost when they stepped in to sub for a<br />

colleague. The cut off time for AESOP is 6:00 am for the high school staff. After that time, you must call the dispatched.<br />
