Malls
With a population of about 90,000
inhabitants, Setubal is the 3rd largest city
in Portugal. The Auchan Group owns a
hypermarket located at the main entrance
of the city that operates with great success
since the early 1990s.
The objective of this project is designing a
mall expansion of the hypermarket, while
maintaining operation, into becoming a
regional shopping centre. Adjacent to the
existing building and functioning as a twostorey
elongated mall, visitors can progress
from the hypermarket checkout on the
one side, and walk through a concourse
that culminates in a food-court terrace
overlooking the Arrabida Mountains at the
opposite end.

The facade of the new building consists of
backlit perforated metal panels and with a
pattern inspired both on the fishing nets of
the Setubal harbour and the “Azulejo” tiles
of the nearby Convent of Christ.
