09:10 COUNTERFEIT MEDICINES: THE RISE OF THE ISSUE & OF THE CORPORATE RESPONSE
• The trade in counterfeit medicines is growing faster than the genuine sales & is estimated to be worth $75bn globally by 2010 (this is a rise of 90% in five years)
• How should such a problem be measured - in dollar value? Quantity? Threat to public health? Damage to reputation?
• Despite the fact that counterfeit medicines kill, counterfeiting has no international legal definition & is seen largely as a civil intellectual property crime
• There is more profit to be made & less risk in dealing with counterfeit medicines than in virtually any other crime
• Differential pricing, the presumption of free trade & the internet are a gift to counterfeiters
• Recognition of the risk & an effective response from both industry & law enforcement has only really become established in the last few years
Frank Gardner OBE, Security Correspondent, BBC
Frank Gardner is the BBC’s fulltime security correspondent reporting for TV and
KEYNOTE
related terrorism. In 2004 he survived being shot six times at close range by Al
Qaeda terrorists in the Riyadh suburb, Saudi Arabia. His cameraman Simon
Cumbers was killed. After many months in hospital he returned to the BBC to
resume his job and in June 2005 he was awarded an OBE for services to
journalism. Frank’s fascination with the Middle East began as a teenager when
he had a chance meeting with Wilfrid Thesiger (who extensively travelled and
photographed the Middle East). A fluent Arabist with a degree in Arabic and
Islamic studies from Exeter University; Frank spent nine years as an investment
banker in New York, London and Bahrain before switching to journalism and
becoming the BBC’s Middle East correspondent based in Cairo. He has reported
extensively on the so-called ‘War on Terror’ in Guantanamo Bay, Yemen,
Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. In May 2006, Frank’s first
book, Blood and Sand, was published by Transworld, reaching number three in
the Sunday Times Bestseller List. It is a remarkable snapshot of the Middle East
over a number of years and the poignant story of what can happen to your belief
system when the culture you have embraced ends up trying to kill you. Frank
openly condemns his attackers saying, “I just think it’s cowardice to shoot somebody who’s defenceless. That isn’t brave,
that’s not making a stand for your beliefs, that’s just cowardice. What kind of battle is that? It’s one thing for them to be
taking on the police in a shootout but taking on a couple of unarmed defenceless journalists?”, but his determination to
return to his full and active life make his story both fascinating and inspirational.
11:00 KIDNAP & RANSOM ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: WOULD YOU KNOW HOW THE
COMPANY SHOULD REACT & WHO SHOULD BE INVOLVED?
The corporate presence in emerging markets raises its own issues in respect of the safety of
those visiting these countries & indigenous staff to the threat of kidnap & ransom. The rise in
kidnap involves a global range of countries & is no longer the preserve (if ever it was) of certain
South American countries although the current unstable situation in Mexico tends to illustrate the
problem faced by a government trying to eradicate corruption within its public sector officials.
How a company prepares its staff for the possibility of becoming a hostage, or victim of an
express kidnap, & other forms of detention would be discussed in this session, & who within the
company should be involved. The need for clear decision making qualities will be discussed
whilst negotiations for the release of a hostage are in progress & their specific responsibilities will
be explored, as well as the importance of simulated training exercises.
• Specific roles & who should perform them within the organisation
• What experience does the crisis team have in managing a kidnap situation?
• Is training any substitute for experiencing the ‘real’ thing?
• What preventative & reactive measures should be taken to safeguard travelling company staff,
expatriates, contractors, & customers
• Is there any benefit in having a specific insurance policy?
Chris Flint, Director, Special Contingency Risks Limited
extensively throughout the Americas, Russia & Eastern Europe, & is a member of a number of organisations & institutions,
& more recently of the Business Continuity Forum. He studied law at the University of Exeter on a Police scholarship & on
graduation returned to mainstream detective duties. Following a period as Staff Officer to the Assistant Commissioner with
responsibility for national drugs intelligence & serious crime, Chris headed the first operational experiment in joint
Police/H.M. Customs & Excise working in the field of crack cocaine. He later studied drugs programmes in the USA under
an Eisenhower Fellowship, and prior to retirement from the police he was the operational head of crime policy at Scotland
Yard. He took up the post of Group Security Advisor for Cadburys Schweppes plc in January 1994 at a time when the food
and drinks industry was experiencing unprecedented threats of extortion & product contamination. He currently advises
clients in a number of fields which include crisis management & business continuity; kidnap & terrorist threat assessments;
security & safety reviews & audits; prevention & detection of corporate fraud; & other areas which fall within his knowledge
of security/risk issues.
15:00 INFORMATION SECURITY CONCERNS & CHALLENGES 2010-2015
The innovation rate in IT remains high – new products introduce new & unknown
vulnerabilities & have side effects that are hard to anticipate. Emerging risks are driven by the
inevitable adoption of products seen as “useful” such as virtualisation, cloud computing,
mobile everything & Web 2.0 social networks. Then there are activities hitherto considered to
be acceptably low risk such as off-shoring. Other domains of risk relate to the significant
dependence of societies on public sector services & how these are (under)resourced. This
presentation discusses a portfolio of vulnerabilities & risks that over the next five years are
likely to cause security managers to lose sleep.
