A five-speed manual gearbox is offered with the
two petrol-engine versions and a four-speed
automatic is offered with the VTi engine.
The 1.6 litre HDi FAP (80kW) diesel develops
240Nm and comes with a five-speed mechanical
gearbox.
The FAP (Filtre à Particules - French for a diesel
particulate filter) contributes to this engine’s low
carbon dioxide emissions; just 125gm/km.
Safety is assured. Seven airbags are fitted into
the top-of-the-range XT, with four or two
provided in the other levels.
ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) is available
on the 308 XT model, giving the driver sustained
and consistent braking performance when
stopping power is called for.
Road-handling has been enhanced – in part as a
result of widened tracks and a lower silhouette.
The 308 is 1.5cm lower than its predecessor.
It doesn’t sound much, but the sleeker lines in
combination with a set-back windshield and the
forward slope of the body create a feline look and
ensure a class-leading drag co-efficient.
The wide radiator grille and elongated lights add
to the effect, creating the impression of a cat
ready to pounce.
The sweep of the saloon’s extensive glass areas
adds to the feeling of modernity and streamlined
efficiency. In particular, the XT’s spectacular
panoramic glass roof is guaranteed to turn heads.
It will also turn your passengers into stargazers on
any night drive. The glass area covers nearly 5m²
(the largest glass surface area in the segment).
French styling characterises the interior aesthetics.
The lines are clean, the dashboard uncluttered
while the foot-wells create more space for
passengers in the rear. In fact, the impression is of
enhanced interior space and surprising roominess
for a car in the mid-size category. The large glass
areas and the inrush of natural light obviously add
to this feeling, but feelings are confirmed by the
generous leg-room and the space-saver seats.
Numerous storage units optimise the available
space, creating overall storage volume of 42 litres,
including an ingenious storage space concealed
beneath the rear shelf and accessible from either
the interior or through the hatchback.
Riding comfort is assured by the pseudo
McPherson front suspension, the rear suspension’s
rear torsion beam and the ‘anti-submarining’
rear seat system.
You don’t only get a comfortable ride, but a quiet
one. Sound-proofing has been significantly improved
thanks to thicker bulkheads, double tube seals in
the engine and the use of polyurethane, polystyrene
and felt padding to dampen engine noise.

U n d e r u r b a n
conditions, the 1.6
HDi version achieved
diesel consumption
of 6 litres per 100km.
In a mix of driving
conditions this came
down to 4.7 litres
per 100km. The 1.6
VTi petrol engine
with manual box
achieved 9.3 litres
per 100km in urban
conditions and 6.7
litres per 100km in
various conditions.
With the 60 litre fuel
tank, the 308 is
obviously designed
to take you a long
