the 308 has it all
There’s safety in numbers… particularly the
numbers 3-0-8. You can add reliability, modernity
and elegance as well. Because the spanking new
Peugeot 308 has got the lot.
The successor to the 307 had to be something special.
And it is. The 307 has notched up world sales of
3.7 million since its introduction in 2002 and became one
of the brand’s core offerings. Similar global success is
predicted for the elegant and efficient 308.
This reliable yet rakish saloon was introduced into
South Africa in January 2008, only a matter of months
after its international debut at the Frankfurt Motor
Show in September.
The 308 is positioned in the mid-size segment that’s
become the most heavily populated space in the motor
industry. In South Africa, 342 competing models clamour
for attention and nearly 100 of them line up in direct
opposition to the newcomer.
Peugeot is obviously confident that the first car to carry
its ‘8’ designation is more than capable of holding its own
in the middleweight division.
There are three offerings in the local range; the 308
X-Line (R169 000), the 308 XS (R197 900) and the 308
XT (R215 900). Automatic and diesel versions of the XS
are on their way soon.
In whatever format, this vehicle has a good claim to be
best by test when it comes to reliability. Factory drivers
clocked up two million on-road kilometres ironing out
every possible snag in the everyday driving conditions that
are likely to confront every owner.
The onboard technology is advanced, but has all been
proven in various iterations before being brought together
in the stylish 308 package.
The newcomer has a five-star EuroNCAP rating – Europe’s
most demanding set of independent safety standards –
and the 308 diesel meets the brand’s newly launched
Blue Lion environmental criteria. Additionally all 308’s
are 95% recyclable at the end of their life.
Efficiency comes standard in the 308 whether the focus
falls on environmental sensitivity, engine performance,
braking, road-holding or fuel consumption.
Three engines are offered – two petrol (both developed
by the PSA Peugeot Citroën and BMW partnership) and
one diesel.
The 1.6 litre (110 kW) THP (turbo high pressure) EP6
petrol engine uses a common rail injection system
and generates an impressive 240Nm of torque. The
1.6 litre (88kW) VTi EP6 employs a variable valve timing
system for optimum efficiency – a world first in this
market segment.
