The South African motor industry is busy recalibrating its expectations for 2008 as sales begin to stall in the wake of higher interest rates and the implementation of the National Credit Act. The euphoria of early 2007 has been replaced by sober reassessments. It would be naïve to believe that Peugeot Motors South Africa is immune to industry pressures like these, but they will not occasion any change in our strategic view. Before passenger vehicle sales began to falter in mid-2007 we announced that we were getting out of the numbers game. Quality was our overriding concern and we pledged considerable resources to a major effort to achieve sustained improvements in customer service and in our relationships with our owners. Our quality focus therefore pre-dates today’s more challenging sales climate. We are well able to compete in a more competitive arena, but will do so on the basis of the quality of our offering and the quality of our support. Our strategic goal is to be an industry leader in terms of customer satisfaction. We have shown our customer orientation by giving an industry lead in our embrace of all rulings by the motor industry ombudsman and our increased investment in customer service. I’m happy to report that complaints are down and satisfaction levels are up. We have also increased our training commitment and invested in a new, much expanded head offi ce in Linbro Park. Warehousing space has been tripled – a signal that we expect sustained long-term growth. Simultaneously, we have maintained the pace of dealer network development and begin 2008 with solid representation in all metropolitan and rural areas. Concerns are mounting that some brands will be scaling down investments and even retrenching in 2008. In contrast, we are maintaining or stepping up our investment and have recommitted ourselves to the strategy of quality-driven growth. We believe South Africa’s economy will continue to expand in 2008 and that a robust economy will continue to create exciting opportunities for a new generation of upwardly mobile consumers. Getting upwardly mobile while getting the quality support you deserve means moving to Peugeot.
