PEugEOT 4007 SuV T H E A D D I T I V E D P A T R I C U L A T E F I L T E R (FAP) SUVs are often criticised for being environmentally harmful, but now you can enjoy the benefits of an SUV and stay “green”. By extracting and burning off harmful particles, the new Peugeot particulate filter system (FAP) in the Peugeot 4007 eliminates virtually all diesel particles. It is the first 4x4 vehicle with an “additived” particulate filter, and is proof of Peugeot’s commitment to reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The particulate filter, devised by Peugeot, remains the ideal solution for reduced diesel emissions. Environmental issues have long been a major concern at Peugeot. Numerous solutions have been applied, starting with the development of efficient, economical diesel engines, whose lower fuel consumption guarantees lower emission levels. The Diesel Advantage Over the years, diesel, then turbodiesel engines have become increasingly efficient. The common rail injection system on the Peugeot engines has further increased their efficiency, with more power for less fuel: the diesel is exposed to high pressure and distributed as an extremely fine spray. The only remaining disadvantage was the all too familiar black smoke from particles in the exhaust, because whilst they emit less CO2, diesels used to release ten to twenty times more soot particles than petrol engines. Well aware of this, the engineers at PSA Peugeot Citroen have devoted much time and effort to the problem, hence 1996 saw the advent of the oxidation catalyser. Development continued and an FAP was created for the Peugeot 607. With this filter Peugeot found a way to reduce particle emissions to virtually zero. It is these microscopic contaminants that are filtered out, using electronically controlled common rail injection. Thousands of small channels making up the filter are blocked alternately to force the exhaust gases through it so as to capture the particles, which then have to be burnt off. By using the filtering process as well as ‘afterburning’, harmful emissions are reduced to virtually zero. previous generation. The 2.2 litre HDi engine has a new combustion chamber which works in combination with a third generation Bosch common rail injection system to increase injections by up to six per cycle, boosting efficiency and reducing pollution emissions at source. The air-fuel mixture, which is optimised to ensure the most complete combustion possible, also reduces noise. The FAP in the 4007 is the latest, i.e. “additived”, version, and is virtually maintenance-free, having a long service life of an impressive 180 000 kilometres. With an emission value as low as 191g/km, the 4007 not only meets but greatly exceeds the Euro 4 pollution standards, making this SUV very environmentally-friendly indeed. Going Even Further Since this spectacular breakthrough, Peugeot has still further – and quite definitively – improved the FAP.
