tabboo!
the art of stephen tashjian
Tabboo! The Art of Stephen Tashjian is the first monograph devoted
to legendary underground painter, puppeteer, performer,
whose work is inspired by the people, places, and things populating
his encompassing, bittersweet worldview. When asked
in a 1995 interview with Linda Simpson about his early work,
Tabboo! noted: “The subject matter was drag, glamour, ladies’
shoes, lingerie, hairdos, vinyl—same as now.” But always to
these exuberant themes Tabboo! has added defiant resolve,
from poignant tributes to friends lost to AIDS, to fairy tales
fashioned into sophisticated treatises on gentrification.
Chronicling the young artist’s arrival to the apocalyptic East
Village of the ‘80s—where he established his own brand of
painterly mastery that continues to today—Tabboo! The Art of
Stephen Tashjian also presents a vast archive of flyers,
snapshots, and other ephemera that charts the development
of the drag performance scene from the Pyramid Club to Wigstock,
highlighting its intersection with popular culture and
the ‘80s art world.
Tabboo!’s own writings, along with essays by Jack Pierson, Elisabeth
Kley, and Lia Gangitano (editor), detail his life’s work and
his collaborations with Mark Morrisroe, Pat Hearn, Howard
Stern, Nan Goldin, and Deee-Lite, among others; as well as his
inclusion in such landmark exhibitions. Not only a prolific artist
in his own right, his distinctive style had a profound impact
on leading cultural figures of his generation, including Goldin,
Morrisroe, Jack Pierson, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, David Armstrong,
and Philip-Lorca di Corcia, whose portraits of Tabboo!
are also included in the publication.
fire island summers
polaroids, 1975-1983
tom bianchi
Growing up in the 1950’s, Tom Bianchi would head into
downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines
at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found a photograph
of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island sounded
exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he
recalls in the preface to his latest monograph. “I had no idea
it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was a
place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of law
school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited
to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered
a community of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera,
Bianchi documented his friends’ lives in the Pines, amassing an
image archive of people, parties and private moments. These
images, published here for the first time, and accompanied
by Bianchi’s moving memoir of the era, record the birth and
development of a new culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie
and reverie, Fire Island Summers conjures a magical bygone era.
Tom Bianchi was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and
graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1970.
He became a corporate attorney, eventually working with Columbia
Pictures in New York, painting and drawing on weekends.
His artwork came to the attention of Betty Parsons and
Carol Dreyfuss and they gave him his first one-man painting
show in 1980. In 1984, he was given his first solo museum exhibition
at the Spoleto Festival. After Tom’s partner died of AIDS in
1988, he turned his focus to photography, producing Out of the
Studio, a candid portrayal of gay intimacy.
the thrill is gone
images from the 1970’s
gusmano cesaretti
Self-taught Italian photographer Gusmano Cesaretti (born
1944) was one of the very first photogra phers to document
the street culture of East Los Angeles, and The Thrill is Gone is
a retrospective history of his celebrated photographic work of
the 1970s. Chapters include “Bikers,” “East L.A. Diary,” “Folsom
Prison,” “Maria Sabina,” “Muscle Beach” and “Street Writers,”
along with selected other iconic images from this important
time in the photographer’s creative history. As a boy grow ing
up in Italy, Cesaretti listened to jazz and rock ’n’ roll on the radio,
and was drawn to the worlds of Marlon Brando and James
Dean in Hollywood movies. But when he arrived in the U.S.—
Cesaretti has lived in Los Angeles since 1970—it was the raw
energy, graffiti, culture and people of East L.A. that seduced
him. His early work—featured here in the chapter “East L.A. Diary”—documents
his immersion in the low rider subculture of
the Klique car club. Cesaretti credits his poor English with allowing
him to earn the trust of local residents—he found it hard
to understand their graffiti on his own and had to ask for help.
Independent curator Aaron Rose describes him as “one of the
few true artists documenting outlaw cultures in the tradition
of Robert Frank.”
toiletpaper no. 7
maurizio cattelan
pierpaolo ferrari
photography
TOILETPAPER is an artists’ magazine created by Maurizio Cattelan
and Pierpaolo Ferrari, born out of a passion/obsession they both
cultivate: images. Each picture springs from an idea, often simple,
and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes the
materialization of the artists’ mental outbursts. TOILETPAPER
contains no text and ever since the first issue of June 2010 combines
the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative
tableaux and a troubling imagination, creating a world that
displays ambiguous narratives and surrealistic imagery.
The result is a publication that is a proper work of art which, through
its wide distribution in form of a magazine, challenges the limits of
our contemporary value system.
Maurizio Cattelan needs no introduction: he has exhibited internationally
in leading international institutions, such as the Skulptur
Projekte in Münster, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Contemporary
Art of Los Angeles and the Museum Ludwig of Cologne. In
addition, he has participated numerous times in the Venice Biennale
(1993, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2011) and curated the 4th Berlin Biennale
together with Massimiliano Gioni and Ali Subotnick. In the meantime,
he managed to promote No soul for sale - A Festival of Independents
that took place in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in 2010 along
with giving birth to art magazines such as Permanent Food and Charley.
Since retiring from art, after the acclaimed retrospective at the
Guggenheim Museum in New York City, he totally committed himself
to the new publishing project,Toiletpaper magazine.
Pierpaolo Ferrari is a fashion and advertising photographer and
creative researcher. His early career in advertising photography was
launched during the explosive years of the medium in Milan. In
2007 he began a productive contribution with L'Uomo Vogue that
offered him the chance to explore the portrait’s potential and radically
change its codes. His personal interest in art and publishing became
clear in 2006 when he founded the publishing and exhibition
space, Le Dictateur, with Federico Pepe, which is a free and unique
location for artists. In 2009, the metamorphosis is completed thanks
to sharing his new publishing obsession with Maurizio Cattelan: Toiletpaper
magazine. When he’s not shooting, he can be found surfing
in Costa Rica.
empire falling
elena dorfman
Los Angeles-based photographer Elena Dorfman’s latest body of
work both conceptually and representationally presents American
rock quarries as geologic phenomena.
In Dorfman’s epic tableaux, the ancient sedimentation and erosion
found at these sites form the basis for her complex and
highly layered compositions. “I manipulate and reconstruct the
landscape, reassembling the pictures just as the oldest rock begins
at the bottom and works its way up to the surface.”
Empire Falling presents the abandoned and active rock quarries
of the Midwest in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Executed over
the course of several years, Dorfman’s images record both the
minute and radical workings of nature, as these spaces give way
to human intervention and exploitation.
New York-based photographer Mariana Cook is known for
her character studies of persons both in and out of the public
eye. Among her previous bestselling photobooks are Mathematicians,
Faces of Science, Mothers and Sons, and Fathers
and Daughters. Her latest collection introduces us to some of
the women and men who are the faces of the human rights
revolution, among them former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan,
the 39th American President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop
Desmond Tutu, and the Burmese democracy activist Aung San
Suu Kyi. Cook traveled the world to photograph and interview
her subjects, and the accompanying texts—some written by
the subjects themselves, others edited from interviews with
them—share their insights into the nature and importance of
human rights, and their reasons for devoting themselves to that
cause. Through them we are reminded of the power of a single
individual—one face, one voice—to transform the world. These
human rights pioneers seek no personal gain: any rewards are
the benefits that we all enjoy when the rule of democratic law
protects us. The pictures and the words in this book show the
strength of human character that has made human rights such
a powerful movement across the world in our lifetime.
THE KING OF KOWLOON
THE KING OF KOWLOON
THE ART OF TSANG TSOU CHOI
A cultural icon who covered the streets of Hong Kong with his
graffiti for over 35 years, Tsang Tsou Choi (1921-2007) used a
brush and ink to proclaim himself The King of Kowloon—the
heir to an imaginary birthright that fueled a lifetime of artistic
output. With his signature style, Tsang wrote himself into
the collective memory of a generation caught between British
and Chinese rule. He left behind an oeuvre that includes
countless outdoor projects (the majority now extant only in
photographs), myriad works on paper, board and cloth, as well
as painted objects. In 1997, Tsang’s inclusion in the celebrated
traveling exhibition Cities on the Move gave him international
exposure within the art world, visibility reinforced by his inclusion
in the 2003 Venice Biennale.
This milestone publication documents Tsang’s influential practice
and enduring legacy, revealing an urban artist, consummate
outsider and self-styled emperor whose story is much
broader than the island he called home.
With over 100 reproductions, a forward by Hans-Ulrich Obrist,
critical essays by Hou Hanru, Ou Ning and others, interviews
and an annotated timeline of the artist’s life, The King of Kowloon
is the first comprehensive survey of Tsang’s complex and
fascinating artistic output.
paz de la huerta:
Paz de la Huerta:
The birds didn’t die
over the winter
Photographs by Alexandra Carr
Photographer Alexandra Carr met Paz de la Huerta—the actress
and Boardwalk Empire star—in New York in 2007, shortly before
Paz became the celebrity she is today, and they soon agreed
to collaborate on a photo project. They began shooting in the
fall of 2008, often using Paz’s small West Village apartment
as a backdrop—which was mercifully well heated throughout
that especially cold New York winter. Paz de la Huerta: The birds
didn’t die over the winter explores themes of love, loneliness
and the difficult transition from youth into relative maturity.
As Carr recalls, “it was made during a turbulent time in Paz’s
life and her life is a subtext in an otherwise imagined reality. We
would discuss a character and direction beforehand and then
Paz would play out these roles partly of made up characters
and of favorite scenes from films each shoot.” Paz is a charismatic
subject throughout the book, at once fearless, sexual and
vividly present, moving fluidly between role play and apparent
candor. Carr explains the title: “[Paz] called one morning in the
spring saying she had an idea for what we should call the book.
She said she woke up and heard birds outside her window. She
couldn’t believe they had survived such an abominable winter.
It was a perfect metaphor for the book.”
daniel brush
The work of Daniel Brush (born 1947) does not fit neatly into
the categories commonly used to describe contemporary art or
craft. While he uses traditional art media such as pen and ink
and paper or canvas, he also uses materials such as blocks of
billet steel, pure aluminum, pure gold and precious gems; he
also makes exquisite jewelry.
These mysterious artworks--drawings, paintings, small sculptures,
jewelry and other objects hard to classify-reveal, upon
close inspection, details that are astonishing in their precision
and technical facility. Most of Brush’s work is in private collections
around the world, and it is rarely seen in public.
Containing more than 450 photographs (all of which represent
the artworks at their actual size), this book shows much of the
artist’s work of the last decade and affords a rare opportunity
to contemplate these objects.
blend of visual impact and aesthetic delicacy, all united by a
strong vein of irony. He uses video, photography, installation
and painting by bending to the demands of a search that must
measures themselves against the limits and ambiguities of
representation and by these means, Gligorov conducts a systematic
and meticulous investigations into the relationship
between image and artifice, and into the cultural impact and
the power iconography holds over the human conscience. He
has held solo exhibitions in major European capitals (Paris, Berlin,
Madrid ) and Milan and Rome. His works are in major public
and private collections. Gligorov after a long study of drawing
and painting has come to the conclusion that there is not an
ideal medium for him.
Art for Gligorov cannot and must not become a job but a pure
and lucid gesture of heroic folly.
hidden identities
yvonne de rosa
Hidden Identities Unfinished documents part of an ongoing
project with Hope and Homes for Children, an international
charity that works to prevent the breakdown of families and to
ensure children grow up in a loving environment.
The charity’s cofounder, Mark Cook, invited London-based Italian
photographer Yvonne De Rosa (born 1975) to meet some of
the orphans he was working with in his attempt to transition
them from “hidden identities” to respected and recognized human
beings. For Hidden Identities Unfinished, De Rosa decided
to create two particular case studies: children in Bosnia and Romania.
Her photographs powerfully communicate the strength
of character these children have developed—their sense of personal
pride, community spirit and human kindness. Sam Taylor-
Wood contributes an introduction to the book.
deep s.e.a.
contemporary art from south east asia
Artists: Aung Ko (Myanmar), Donna Ong
(Singapore), Sopheap Pich (Cambodia), Natee
Utarit (Thailand), Nithakhong Somsanith
(Laos), Nguyên Thái Tuân (Vietnam), Khvay
Samnang, Aditya Novali (Indonesia), La Huy
(Vietnam), Ruben Pang (Singapore), Isabel &
Alfredo Aquilizan (Philippines).
Playing with the semantic meaning ambivalence, the exhibition
title revolve around the word “S.E.A.”, all the while acronym of
South East Asia and cross-reference to the common geo-physical
element of the sea, the only shared border among Southeast
Asian countries: except for Laos, indeed, all the countries shores
producing exhibited artists are lapped by the Pacific Ocean. Here,
the history of art becomes an hazardous ground, hard to sum
up within the limits of local art habits. Arguably, we will always
talk about art “from” Southeast Asia instead of “of” Southeast
Asia, supporting the objective absence of an art classifiable as
regional. Rather, it is a group of astonishing ideas and practices
springing up from a pinpointed creative context.
11 artists from 8 countries, introduced by internationally wellknow
local contributors, constitute the visual support of this
far-away-coming story, telling of identity and memory, hope and
trauma, religion and oppression, emotional and concrete diaspora,
constantly fluctuating between nationalism and globalism.
Southeast Asian artists become the protagonists of the global
art scene: from few exhibitions at the Singapore Art Museum to
the forth-coming No Country: Contemporary Art for South and
Southeast Asia, scheduled for February 2013 at the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum in New York, passing by the latest dOCU-
MENTA edition in Kassel, Germany.
Using a wide range of media, from painting to performance
documentation, each artist struggles to drag us into a glimpse
of his life and to whisper his personal world view.
Walter Vallini Architect
Works 2000 | 2012
Architect and artist/designer, Walter Vallini was born in
Rome and studied in Florence. He now divides his time between
Rome and Berlin.
Winner of the IDIA AWARDS in 1989, Vallini’s work has been
presented in numerous exhibitions and published by major
magazines and publishing houses.
Walter Vallini is an architect who practices design and art
not as two separate practices, but as a single, self-sustaining
activity. You could say that his works - tables, lamps, etc.
- are items of furniture of great quality that could be called
“sculptures”, one of a kind pieces that are being made in
serial production.
We prefer to reverse this train of thought: Vallini’s sculptures
are “functional” or “function-able”, meaning sculptures
that can also act as a lamp or table, but their essence
consists in spatial constructions within a space, meaning
sculptures.
This book is the first in a series entitled, “New Italian Creative
Generation”, directed by journalist and critic, Giorgio
Tartaro, and dedicated to the most interesting Italian architects
and designers of the last generation.
new book series
Damiani has launched a brand new
book series dedicated to artists who
are making their debut and who
would like to see their first book
published. FACTORY targets those
artists who move in the eclectic
world of the visual arts, where photography,
contemporary art, urban
art, fashion and design coexist and
occasionally influence one another,
producing extraordinary forms of
artistic expression.
The aim of the series is to generate a
platform for discussion and debate
about the works of less well-known
artists and to bring their art to a
wider public by means of publishing
the book. FACTORY is thus a workshop
in which books are devised and
developed, with the careful choice
of content and illustrations, graphic
format and quality printing that
distinguishes each and every one of
Damiani’s publications.
disquiet
amani willett
Disquiet is a meditation on starting a family in a time of social
unrest and uncertainty in America. A metaphoric journey that
examines the first two years in the life of the photographer’s
son, Disquiet weaves intimate family pictures with images of
American society and the economic and political instability
that defined its identity in the years between 2010 - 2012.
Utilizing a comprehensive visual approach, including environmental
portraiture, landscapes, still lives and sociological documents,
Disquiet creates a multi-layered story of beauty, tenderness
and unease.
The resulting book is a fresh and distinctive approach to storytelling.
One in which the themes of family, life, death, and external
forces come to the foreground, recede, then cycle back
again. The book brings the viewer on a journey that seamlessly
shifts from public to private spaces and from the more literal to
the metaphoric.
Through the complex mix of imagery and the thoughtful design,
sequencing and pacing, Disquiet moves beyond a simple
visual record to poignantly reconstruct the mood of the timeperiod
depicted. Disquiet is a striking visual interpretation of
one person’s experience that is sure to resonate with the experiences
of many.
the portrait machine project
carlo van de roer
The Portrait Machine Project, Carlo Van de Roer’s first book, explores
the idea that a camera can reveal otherwise unseen insights
within the relationship between artist, camera, subject
and viewer.
Van de Roer uses a polaroid aura camera developed in the 1970’s
in an attempt to record what a physic may see. His subjects -
friends, family and personalities of public note, including artists
Miranda July, Aurel Schmidt and Terence Koh, as well as author
James Frey - are connected by sensors to the camera which
translates biofeedback into information about their character
and how they are viewed. The modified land camera
depicts this information as color in the polaroid and as a printed
description and diagram. By including well-known personalities,
Van de Roer asks what it is a viewer expects from a portrait,
particularly a portrait of someone they think they know.
American photographer Andrew Moore began making
pictures in Cuba in 1998, and during ten subsequent
visits spread over the next fourteen years, worked to
reveal many facets of the island’s unique character and
life. In 2002, he published some of this work in Inside
Havana, to great acclaim, and which is now out of print.
This new edition, while including many of Moore’s
older classic images, reconceives its predecessor with
a new layout, as well as finer and larger reproductions.
This new book also includes many older photographs
never previously published, as well as new photographs
made specifically for this edition. The afterword
was especially commissioned for this edition from Orlando
Luis Pardo Lazo, one of Cuba’s leading independent
This volume compiles all of the photographs
from Terry Richardson’s wildly successful 2012
show TERRYWOOD, held at the oHWoW gallery in
Los Angeles. TERRYWOOD is the photographer’s
vision of everything that Hollywood has meant
and continues to mean in the public imagination:
grand-scale glitz, big budget glamour—and
of course the awards ceremonies, in homage to
which Richardson produced a series of ten award
statuettes for the show, fashioned in his own bespectacled
likeness. These works and all of the
photographs included in the exhibition are reproduced
here, alongside documentation of the
year long process of planning the exhibition,
and coverage of the opening night, which was
attended by celebrities such as Tom Ford, James
Franco, Odd Future, Sasha Grey, Paris Hilton, Paz
de la Huerta, Jared Leto, Lindsay Lohan and Frank
Ocean, and which has already become legendary
as one of the glitziest opening nights in recent
memory. TERRYWOOD also includes texts by Jeffrey
Deitch and Al Moran.
Gary Simmons’ art represents the most thoughtful,
poetic and subtle consideration of race and class
conceived in the last 25 years. Born in New York in
1964, Simmons attended the School of Visual Arts and
in 1990 received an MFA from CalArts in Los Angeles,
where he exhibited his most affecting sculptural work.
Simmons’ first studio after returning to New York was
in an old school building, where he found abandoned
rolling blackboards that he used as elements in his
sculpture. Soon after he began his first series of chalk
drawings using disturbingly naive racist cartoon
imagery, which he executed on newly fabricated
blackboards. The time spent in the school fortuitously
focused Simmons’ ongoing reclamation of childhood
fantasies and elusive ghostly memories. While
closely identified over the years with his enormous
wall drawings, or “erasure” drawings, Simmons has
consistently worked across media. His photographs,
installations, sculpture, drawings, paintings and
public projects explore the visual language of our
social and cultural landscape as they touch on symbols
and themes that range from poetic longing to the
vernacular of the inner city. With approximately 150
reproductions, an introduction by Okwui Enwezor,
critical texts by Gwen Allen and Charles Wylie and
a reprint of an important early essay by Nancy
Princenthal, Paradise is the first publication to offer
a comprehensive overview of Simmons’ multifarious
career.
A hardcover artist's book in the form of a visual collage,
incorporating photographs, drawings, paintings and
documentation of past and present installations. Barry
McGee's art buzzes with an infectious street vitality
that celebrates the rich pageant of city living, while
lambasting its "ills, overstimulations, frustrations,
addictions." His early years as a graffiti artist, tagging
on the streets of San Francisco under such monikers
as Ray Fong, Twist and Twisto, still nourish his need to
inscribe the blank face of modern life with the personal
and the handmade.
Ideas from Massimo Osti tells the story of the
creator of the clothing brands C.P. Company
and Stone Island. Crowned themost importantman
of 1990s menswear by Arena Homme +,
Massimo Osti (1944–2005) was one of the most
respected and imitated designers of his generation,
whose innovations confounded the rules
of the industry and created the fabrics of today.
This is the story of a fashion engineer who
throughout the 1970s and 1980s created an entirely
new category of clothing— today known
as “urban sportswear”— that was inspired asmuch
by the cultural ferment of those years as
by Osti’s enormous archive of vintagemilitary
uniforms and work wear. The book tells its story
through images of Osti’s most important designs:
his innovations in garment dyeing, his development
of new fabrics inspired by the tarps
truck drivers use to batten down loads, and othermaterials
such as rubber flax, the “Ice Jacket”
that changes colors with the temperature, or
Maurizio Cattelan’s newest body of work comprises startling
photographs done in collaboration with commercial photographer
Pierpaolo Ferrari and published in Cattelan’s limited edition
with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery these
images mark a new phase in Cattelan’s art production. This
important body of work is gathered here for the first time in
book form re-edited by Dennis Freedman in collaboration with
Maurizio Cattelan needs no introduction: he has exhibited internationally
in leading international institutions, such as the
Skulptur Projekte in Münster, the Tate Gallery in London, the
Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles and the Museum
Ludwig of Cologne. In addition, he has participated numerous
times in the Venice Biennale (1993, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2011)
and curated the 4th Berlin Biennale together with Massimiliano
Gioni and Ali Subotnick. Since retiring from art, after the
acclaimed retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New
York City, he totally committed himself to the new publishing
project,Toiletpaper magazine.
Pierpaolo Ferrari is a fashion and advertising photographer and
creative researcher. His early career in advertising photography
was launched during the explosive years of the medium in Milan.
In 2007 he began a productive contribution with L'Uomo
Vogue that offered him the chance to explore the portrait’s potential
and radically change its codes. In 2009, the metamorphosis
is completed thanks to sharing his new publishing obsession
with Maurizio Cattelan: Toiletpaper magazine.
The redesign of Lincoln Center is one of the most
challenging and innovative civic projects in recent
urban history. Over the past eight years, Diller Scofidio
+ Renfro (DS+R), in close collaboration with FxFowle,
Beyer Blender Belle and Lincoln Center’s leadership,
has transformed the 50 year-old modernist citadel
into a porous and democratic campus. This visually
rich document is the first comprehensive book to
feature the extensive redevelopment in its entirety.
Lincoln Center Inside Out details DS+R’s interpretation
of the modernist project after several generations of
social and political change. Through a combination of
photographs, drawings, renderings, archival records
and texts, the book describes the innovative strategies
that have dissolved the public/private divide and
effectively turned the campus inside-out, extending
the spectacle of the performance halls into the Center’s
mute public spaces and surrounding streets. Conceived
as a cross between an art book, a scholarly record and
an architectural diary, this publication demonstrates
how the recent redesign both respects and challenges
preconceived notions about Lincoln Center and its
ongoing role as a cultural hub in an ever-changing
city. This unorthodox publication is comprised entirely
of gatefolds; a series of inside-out centerfolds where
the exterior pages of each spread feature large-format
photographs highlighting different parts of the campus.
Destroyed
Destroyed, is the title of Moby album
and accompanying book of photography
published by Damiani. The pictures in this
book were all taken on tour. I wanted to
put out a book of tour photos. Touring is
strange in that: a) "It involves a nomadic,
peripatetic daily existence"; b) "It solely
involves anonymous spaces ( hotel
rooms, backstage areas, airports)"; c) "It
involves complete isolation(hotel rooms)
juxtaposed with complete immersion in
seas of people"; d) "Only about 2% of being
on tour involves anything even remotely
glamorous (...)".
Since 2004, the French artist JR has traveled the
world flyposting colossal black-and-white portraits
of ordinary citizens on the walls of city buildings.
In May 2012, JR collaborates with American artist
José Parlá on the latest iteration of The Wrinkles
of the City: a huge mural installation in Havana,
undertaken for the Havana biennale, for which
JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25
senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban
revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is
of Cuban descent, interlaced with palimpsestic
calligraphic writings and paintings. Parlá’s
markings echo the distressed surfaces of the walls
he inscribes, and offer commentary on the lives
of Cuba’s elders; together, JR and Parlá’s murals
marvelously animate a city whose walls are otherwise
adorned only by images of its leaders. This volume features
the portraits, short biographies of their subjects and
photographs of their mural collaborations painted around
Havana. a film documenting the project appears in 2013.
based in Paris, JR exhibits freely in public sites in the cities
around world. His projects include Portraits of a Generation
(2004–2006), Face2Face (2007) and Women Are Heroes
(2008). In 2011 he was awarded the TED prize.
José Parlá studied painting at the Savannah College of art
and design in Georgia, and the New World School of the arts
in Miami, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. a recent
project is a special commission for the Brooklyn Academy of
Mother Road is more than just a book. It’s the life of
Luigi “Raptuz” Muratore in pictures: his own pictures
to be exact, from his first graffiti in the hinterland of
Milan, to his latest works, which have been praised by
critics. His teacher was the street, the Mother Road. This
monograph is divided into sections, and within each it
is possible to discover Raptuz’s various human and artistic
facets. Before making space for the pictures, the
artist tells us about his passion for “writing,” which
came in a flash and which was cultivated in suburban
decay, always on the lookout for the police. The events
follow one another: the “krew,” the years in Los Angeles,
coming back to Italy, the first awards. Passion becomes
art.
Nick Haymes first met Gabe Nevins on an editorial
assignment in the summer of 2007. Gabe had just
wrapped up his lead role in Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid
Park, in which he had played a teenage skateboarder
who accidentally kills a security guard.
Gabe had never acted prior to starring in the film;
he had heard about Van Sant’s casting call from
a skateboard store and initially auditioned as an
extra. Meeting the teenager, Haymes recalls: “Initially,
Gabe was fairly shy, but it quickly transpired
that he had seen some of my skateboarding images
online and an instant friendship was struck.
When the assignment was over, I approached
Gabe about the possibility of working on more
photographs as there was something entirely
captivating about him and his energy.” Published
in an edition of 30 copies, this limited edition
includes a numbered and signed photograph by
Nick Haymes and original excerpts from Gabe’s
notebooks.
"One could say that Detroit has become America’s
version of an open city. It’s been left undefended
against an onslaught of scrappers, vandals, and
the forces of nature. It’s a city of hundreds, if not
thousands, of empty homes, apartment buildings,
factories, libraries, hospitals, schools, and churches.
All are abandoned and most are unguarded, barely
salvageable, and slated for demolition that gets
delayed year after year".
Andrew Moore
Since moving to the United States from his native
Germany, photographer Stephan Würth has been
fascinated with the mythical vistas of the American
West and the isolation and freedom of vast desert
expanses. Würth culminates this geographical romance
with the new series Ghost Town. These photographs
narrate the tale of three women as they journey
through Nevada, where they soon find themselves
stranded with a broken-down car on the side of a
desolate road. Shot over seven days on black-andwhite
Kodak Tri-X film, the images were scanned for
the book from 16 x 20 inch hand-developed prints and
never retouched. The book also features an epilogue by
Greg Gorman put together a collection of more than
200 portraits of young men, some of whom became
famous. An album that reveals the evergreen fascination
of youth, when time has yet to obfuscate ingenuousness,
melancholic gentleness and, above all, the
beauty that characterises life’s âge d’or. The photographer
writes in the introduction: “My photographs have
often captured the sensuality that goes hand in hand
with vulnerability. When the subject has an unawareness
of the camera, he reveals an inward truth, that
maybe he doesn’t even realize is coming forth in the
pictures”. From Tom Cruise to Kevin Costner, from Leonardo
di Caprio to Brad Pitt and on to Patrick Dempsey,
Charlie Sexton, Rupert Everett, Johnny Depp and many
others, In their Youth is a manifesto of the agonising,
sensual and “Wildean” promise of beauty. This limited
edition comes with a signed archival print photograph
of Christopher Atkins (17 x 13 inches), signed by both Atkins
and Gorman, and comes housed in a linen cloth
box.
Portraits spans the twenty-year career of acclaimed
fashion and celebrity photographer Michael Thompson.
Taken from the pages of leading fashion and lifestyle
magazines such as Vogue, W, GQ, Allure and Vanity
Fair, Michael Thompson’s images provide fantastical
yet revealing glimpses into the lives of the actors,
musicians and personalities who enliven our culture.
Through his chameleon-like adaptability, witty
storytelling and concise visual aesthetic, Michael
Thompson has created indelible imagery of celebrities
such as Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Sting, Mariah
Carey, and George Clooney. Michael Thompson,
after receiving a degree from the Brooks Institute of
Photography, he moved to New York City and became
primary assistant photographer to Irving Penn.
This is a Gotham City reconstructed from memory,
often infused with a glassy light and an atmosphere
sometimes glowing with vivid colors, other times
wrapped in muted hues. It is a sentimental journey in
the big apple of our imagination, from the East river
bridges to the Empire State Building, from the Gugthe
artist, "I reinvent and reinforce them." Serrano's
subjects for this series are selected from among his
friends and acquaintances, emphasizing (like Caravaggio
before him) the ordinariness of human features.
This volume is Serrano's major statement of
his religious and artistic belief.
