06 OCTOBER 2010
We have embarked upon the journey which will take us through the fourth term of 2010! Many of you will be thinking
“Where has this year gone?” For South Africans it was a year eagerly anticipated. We hosted the Soccer World Cup
with resounding success and proved to ourselves what a great nation we are. At the start of the year we suggested that
each child should make 2010 memorable for achieving their own special goals. We are on the last lap of the year. Time
is running out. Time is a commodity which we humans have created for our own convenience, but it often gets the
better of us! There are many idioms and proverbs relating to the concept of time – their differing meanings reflecting
our personal experiences. Time flies when we are having fun, it stands still sometimes too. We measure it, spend it,
save it, lose it and want to call it back. Time runs away from us, we cannot hold it, but the passage of time heals the
wounds which life inflicts upon us. SO this term have a whale of a time, but remember time and tide wait for no man
and PROCRASTINATION is the thief of time.
members who will be involved in the planning and preparation for two of our Fourth Term events, namely Golf Day and
Open Day.
TIME CHANGES FOR 2011
The Governing Body of Bergvliet Primary School has given permission for the following small amendments to our
school hours. On MONDAYS, TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS school will end at 14.30 (instead of 14.20) and
second break will last from 13.00 until 13.30 (and not 13.20 as before), for Grade Three to Grade Seven learners.
THESE AMENDMENTS WILL COME INTO EFFECT AS FROM JANUARY 2011.
STAFF NEWS
Mr Patrick Mhloli, one of our team of Maintenance Staff, happily welcomed his third child, a son, into the world on
Tuesday, 21 September 2010. We wish the family good health and happiness.
OPEN DAY
On Friday, 15 October 2010 we will open the school from 15.00 to 19.00 to enable parents, learners and friends to view
the wonderful work of our BPS learners. We encourage you to walk through the passageways with your children,
praising their creativity and thus encouraging further effort. You will also be able to enjoy a performance of music in
the Hall, work from the Art and Technology classrooms will be on display and the Media and Computer Centres will be
open to visitors. Classrooms which have the interactive white boards may also be visited for parents to view this
exciting technology in action.
Light snacks such as pies, samoosas, crisps, chocolates and cooldrinks will be available at the Tuck Shop. We look
forward to receiving you with a warm welcome for an afternoon which promises to be interesting, informative and
rewarding.
SCHOOL WILL CLOSE AT 13.00 FOR ALL LEARNERS ON THIS DAY
EARLY NOTIFICATION: SCHOOL FEES MEETING
The annual meeting to set the 2011 school fees will be held on WEDNESDAY, 10 NOVEMBER 2010. Please diarise
this important date now as it is essential for as many parents as possible to be present at this decision making meeting –
this is an opportunity to be part of the discussion and determination of your school fees for the new year which lies
ahead.
UNIFORM SURVEY FEEDBACK
We are most appreciative of the feedback from those parents who completed and returned their survey sheets timeously.
A significant number of parents indicated that they were indeed completely happy with the present “new”uniform.
We assume that parents who decided not to return a survey sheet were entirely satisfied with all aspects of our uniform.
We are presently “test-driving” a new fabric for the khaki trousers. Feedback on this will be given to parents at a later
stage.
Commencing in 2011 the white golf shirt will, as usual, be worn for Physical Education classes, sport practices and
athletics, tennis, and cricket matches. For soccer, hockey and netball matches the team players will be required to wear
the school sport top (also called the soccer top). This is available from the School Clothing Shop at a cost of R85,00 for
age 7 – 8 and age 9 -10. Age 11 – 12 and 13 – 14 sizes cost R90,00 and R95,00 for small and medium sizes.
Holistic Education to be proud of.

SUMMER UNIFORM
All learners are to be correctly and neatly dressed in the appropriate Summer school uniform by MONDAY, 25
OCTOBER 2010. This gives parents three weeks at the start of the term to shop for the necessary garments. A detailed
list of all items stocked at the School Clothing Shop and prices can be consulted in the Newsletter dated 01 September
2010. Please note the correct prices for the soccer tops (above). The School Clothing Shop will be open as usual on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 07.45 to 08.30.
WE ARE PROUD OF ……….
During the few days at the end of August when the Lions Operation Brightsight eye testing was being conducted at
Bergvliet Primary School, the behaviour of the learners undergoing the testing was so exemplary that the tester
complimented the staff. She visits many schools during the course of her work and she remarked that the polite, kind
and respectful children at Bergvliet Primary had impressed her enormously.
Cameron Williams (Gr 2T) found a Golden Litter Ticket while he was diligently retrieving litter from the school
grounds. His reward was a chocolate and a complimentary visit to the wonderful Two Oceans Aquarium at the Cape
Town Waterfront.
On the sporting front BPS is pleased to share the news of good sportsmanship and teamwork which resulted in the U10
Girls’ Hockey team enjoying an unbroken record of victory over their opponents for the season. Also undefeated were
the U12 Soccer teams.
We are very pleased to be able to share the latest news of Dewaldt van Rooi’s karate success. Dewaldt represented
Western Province at the Goju Kai Annual South African Championship in Durban on 25 and 26 September 2010. His
commitment to and enthusiasm for his chosen sport is most commendable.
“A Whisper in the Mill” is a publication by Whisper from the Heart Poetry Club. In the June 2010 publication the work
of several Bergvliet Primary School learners appears. Among the creative talents are those of Leah Michaels (Gr 7H),
Emile Steyn (Gr 7W), Carla Mathyse (Gr 7A), Caitlin Foley (Gr 7A) and Ryan Foley (Gr 5P). We are proud of these
learners and trust that they will continue recording their thoughts and ideas through poetry and prose, for the enjoyment
of their readers and for their own enrichment.
PEACE POSTER COMPETITION
Twelve BPS learners submitted artwork to the annual Lions Peace Poster competition. The adjudicators visited our
school on Tuesday, 21 September 2010 and selected a poster created by Leah Michaels (Gr 7H). The topic was entitled
“Vision of Peace” and Leah’s interpretation of this title and her vibrant use of colour impressed the selection committee.
Her poster will proceed to the next round of the competition which will be judged on 15 October at the Old Mutual
Business School. We are extremely proud to share the good news of Leah’s creative success.
RECYCLING
Recycling MUST be part of a sustainable lifestyle. Like many cities world-wide, Cape Town is running out of landfill
sites where the waste of the households of the city is burned and buried. Many creative artists and crafters have
demonstrated how innovatively and usefully recycled material can be transformed into decorative and practical
Holistic Education to be proud of.
products. BPS has a history of being a “green” school (not just the colour of our uniform) and our recycling grade
competition from 6 – 10 September demonstrated just how much paper recycling we could collect. An Everest of paper
reaching 186,5m high, was gathered from the combined grades, with Grade Three learners being the champions who
collected 48m worth! Second place went to the Grade Six classes who brought in 32m and third place was taken by the
Grade Seven learners who contributed 25,5m worth. A free Civvies day is the prize awarded to the victors. Perhaps we
should move the goalposts a little higher in the Fourth Term and aim to reach a 200m summit?
THANK YOU FOR CARING
Thank you most sincerely to all parents for your open-hearted response to our recent appeals for donations of cash and
tinned food for the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association, the R5,00 civvies donation towards the Lentegeur School,
and the donations of sugar and margarine for the Children’s Christmas Pudding charity project. Your support enables
us to truly say “Bergvliet Primary Cares”.
Many thanks are also due to all families who contributed items to fill our Golf Day (tomorrow!) goodie bags and kindly
gave prizes and cash donations. It is this spirit of generosity demonstrated by the parents at BPS which contributes in
no small measure to the annual success of this popular fundraiser.
GRADE SEVENS’ DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA
On Tuesday, 14 September 2010, our Grade Seven learners showed that practise does indeed make perfect, when they
treated parents and staff to an evening of fleet-footed, gliding, swirling and twirling dance expertise. The audience was
impressed and entranced by the very grown-up looking children, all stylishly outfitted in spruce suits and dramatic
dresses. A memorable evening was enjoyed by all, and even Ginger, the BPS cat, took to the floor for a stretch, a turn
and a roll! Many thanks are extended to all who contributed towards the running costs of the evening by kindly making
donations at the door – this was a great help indeed.
BARN DANCE
Our first BPS Barn Dance was held in the School Hall on Friday, 17 September 2010. Although some of the
participants who had never experienced barn dancing before, might have wondered just what was in store for them, they
soon found out that it is pure, unstoppable FUN. One of the dancers was overheard wishing that Barn Dancing could be
part of Phys Ed class………. Thanks are due to all those parents, staff and learners who worked together to ensure that
the evening was a success.
GRADE SEVENS TOUR THE GARDEN ROUTE
Each year Grade Sevens look forward with excitement and expectation to what is surely a highlight of their final year at
BPS – the Grade Seven Tour. The four-day and three-night itinerary this year encompassed Oudtshoorn, Knysna and
Mossel Bay. The touring party departed from school early on Monday, 20 September, a rather wintery, drizzly start,
and returned on Thursday, 23 September 2010. The learners enjoyed four days packed with fun and new experiences,
including visits to Monkeyland, the Elephant Park and the Featherbed Reserve in Knysna, and the magical world of the
Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn. In summing up Mr Hill felt that it was a most memorable trip, with no problems
encountered, and a wonderful, hands-on learning adventure of great pleasure for all participants – in short an absolute
success!
THANK YOU BERGVLIET PRIMARY
We received a letter of warm and grateful thanks from the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association for the collection
of tinned food which our learners donated to this organisation. There are many people in the cerebral palsy community
who are in desperate need of assistance in obtaining the bare essentials of life, commodities which many people would
take for granted. The collection tins which were circulated amongst the classes also generated a most gratifying amount
of cash. The breakdown of the contents of the collection tins is as follows:
Grade One R118,10
Grade Two R218,30
Grade Three R 61,95
Grade Four R313,10
Grade Five R255,35
Grade Six R 85,24
Grade Seven R 66,40
TOTAL : R1 118,44
Thank you SO MUCH to our wonderful caring, giving community of parents – we can always rely on your unfailing
support.
Holistic Education to be proud of.
EARLY MORNINGS: SAFETY AND SECURITY
We understand that due to travelling time, traffic congestion and other work-related time-frames, some parents are
compelled to bring their children to school earlier than they would prefer. Although the official time of entry into the
building for learners is 07.45, when Educators commence their daily duties, the school gates are unlocked by our
Maintenance Staff at 06.45. From 07.00 onwards the front (Childrens Way) and back (Alphen Way) gates are manned
by our Maintenance and Security Staff. Children who are dropped at school early may wait in safety in the area of the
Hall Quadrangle, under the shelter of the roof if it is cold and wet. The Administration Staff begin work at 07.30 and
would be available to deal with any problems or emergencies which may occur. We urge parents to impress upon their
children that if they are to be at school before the arrival of their classmates, they remain in the Hall Quad and keep
away from the fence and gates. This would be an excellent opportunity to enjoy some quality reading time.
Whilst on the subject of safety, it has become necessary to remind all parents of the need to exercise extreme caution
when driving, parking, reversing, stopping and starting your vehicle in the environs of the school. On Friday, 17
September 2010, one of our mothers was walking with her son on the pavement outside the school when they had a
close call with a vehicle which was reversing from a parking place whilst the driver was conversing on her cell phone.
The vehicle actually brushed against the mother who was fortunately sufficiently vigilant to have held her son back,
otherwise the child may actually have been knocked down. The vehicle, a white Polo 1,6 had the registration No. CA
508 615. We cannot over-emphasize the need for vigilance, caution and slow, safe driving – children, especially the
younger ones, are not always aware of everything else which is happening around them, and peripheral vision is still
developing in Foundation Phase learners. LET US ALWAYS BE SAFE SO THAT WE DO NOT HAVE TO BE
SORRY!
Bergvliet Primary School is situated in the heart of a residential area and we always endeavour to be good neighbours to
the families who live in close proximity to our school. Please remember NOT TO HOOT to attract your child’s
attention and encourage quiet and orderly behaviour on the pavement when dropping and collecting, especially in the
early morning hours when some of our neighbours may still be sleeping.
COMMUNICATION WITH SCHOOL
Please read the attached iText information sheet carefully to ensure that your communication lines with the school work
at optimum level.
COMMUNITY BUZZ NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWSLETTER
One of our BPS parents has started a new venture, a community newsletter which is distributed solely through e-mail.
This community service will be absolutely FREE to all subscribers who choose to sign up for it. The average monthly
newsletter will cover only one or two A4-size pages (making it a very eco-friendly and sustainable method of
communicating) and will keep readers in touch with all sorts of community happenings, including church, school and
business announcements, forthcoming events and a monthly prize giveaway. We are assured that should parents decide
to join up to this community project, they will not be bombarded with spam nor will any private information be shared
with a third party. Community Buzz is sponsored by local businesses who are given advertising space on the newsletter.
This advertising space is limited to a set amount per newsletter. The necessary subscription form is attached to this BPS
newsletter for your completion and return via Mrs Bettie Shaban at the school office.
