COMMUNITIES
2011 ANNUAL REPORT
PENINSULA METROPOLITAN YMCA
ANTICIPATING
MOBILIZING
GROWING
Dear Friends,
Our cause is substantial - to strengthen the foundation of
our community. For more than 116 years, we’ve listened and
responded to the needs of Peninsula-area residents. Our local
presence enables us to mobilize our communities to effect lasting
and meaningful change. Our work provides the opportunities
needed to succeed.
Within our 15 YMCAs, and more than 49 program sites, we are
excited to continue providing our service area more communitycentered
opportunities for the future.
Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in America
and here in Virginia. In answer to the crisis, we have incorporated
our IGNITE program into all School-Age programs and served over
16,000 children. In 2012, we are launching 95210, a program
designed to educate kids and their parents about the importance of
sleep, exercise, diet and less TV and computer screen time.
Our day camp programs thrived this summer, serving 13,759 kids,
averaging 1,300 campers a week. Summer Camp allows our youth to

gaining independence.
Bright Beginnings hit an all-time high, equipping 1,018 students
with much-needed clothes and school supplies for the new year.
We offered more than 2.3 million dollars in membership
scholarships this year. The growing diversity of our membership
strengthens us while reinforcing our commitment to building a
healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Our Strong Communities annual giving campaign, which helps us
ensure that everyone, regardless of economic circumstance, has the
opportunity to thrive, grew again this year, raising $1,098,347, the
largest amount in our history.
We wrapped up improvements at our Victory and Luter branches
and are opening our new branch in Northumberland in February
2012. We relocated Branch Services from the Victory branch
and now have a complete training facility back in the city of
Newport News, where we started so many years ago. Our capital
improvements topped 6 million dollars this year and, as a result,
more children and families have a place of their own at the YMCA.
Your donations help the Y meet our mission, and we are thankful
that the communities we serve and advocate for trust us to be good
stewards of their resources.
While helping to form communities that support the success of all
children, the YMCA encourages the development of positive values,
a commitment to service, and motivation to learn.
As our communities change, the Y continues to anticipate and meet
the ever-growing needs.
I had a godchild who needed full-day child care, but their family was
unable to pay the full program fee; the Y helped us and our godchild’s
family to overcome that barrier. We were able to receive help from
the Guardian program to get him enrolled. I said then that, someday,
I would pay it forward and be able to give back to the Y a portion of
what they had given to me. Chairing the Festival of Trees committee
I choose to volunteer my time at the Y because it’s fun and I thoroughly
enjoy it! As a mother of 6 children, we come to the Y to swim and work
out, and I love that the Y supports healthy habits for all of us. I truly feel
that we are part of a family composed of members and staff that cares
for all of us, and will continue to support the Y any way I can.
GETTING THE GOLD STAR
IN EDUCATION
The Y believes that all kids deserve the opportunity to
discover their full potential, so we set out to develop a
program model that would help those schools where kids
need a little extra help to make the grade.
In 2002, the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA initiated

Elementary School in Hampton, Virginia as a target
school for the model. Cooper was a Title I school where
75% of the children come from single-parent homes.
The students were struggling in all areas and were
experiencing an increase in school violence and had one
of the lowest promotion rates in the city of Hampton.
Today, Cooper, known as William Mason Cooper
Elementary Magnet School for Technology, is a shining star of the Hampton City Schools. Star Achievers
Academy YMCA, together with the support of the Peninsula Rotary Club, Hampton City Schools, Huntington
Ingalls Industries, and a volunteer board of management, have created a model that weaves technology and
science throughout the curriculum, resulting in staggering successes.
Students at Cooper have YMCA mentors in engineering, medicine, mathematics and science. They practice
character education, learning and practicing the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. And
they participate in IGNITE, which teaches students how to implement healthy activity and eating habits into
their lives. The Y also provides intercession, after school and summer camps for the children, and provides
professional development for the teachers.
Cooper is now fully accredited on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) and making adequate yearly
progress.
Joining the Y movement was one of the best decisions of my life. The
kindness, positive attitude, and general feeling of happiness does good
for one’s soul. And knowing you are contributing to the team’s mission
I thank you, YMCA, for the good friends I’ve made, the new concepts
one that matched her likes and needs. She tried Silver
before she tried water aerobics, which turned out to
be a perfect match. “When I went in the water, I just
absolutely fell in love with it; it was so much fun,” says Susan. “You can get a lot of good exercise and you don’t
sweat; it’s low impact, or no impact depending on which end of the pool we’re in, so it doesn’t hurt my joints.
And the class is as much about the socialization as it is about the exercise, I think,” laughs Susan. “I’m really
glad my husband made me join!”
Two years passed by quickly, friendships deepened, and Susan’s love of water exercise never waned once. When
door is knowing how many people depend on me - and me on them, it turns out. I don’t know how I would have
handled everything without everyone here at the Y. My coworkers and my friends from class have truly been a
blessing; I think God had a plan when he had Herbert trick me into joining the Y.”

goal is to still be doing this when I’m 85!”
I am extremely happy to be able to give my time to the YMCA, and
especially the First Tee program, knowing the potential impact golf and
the character development curriculum will have on the youth we serve.
The First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula program has allowed me the
opportunity to channel my enthusiasm for the game of golf by helping
children of all ages to not only enjoy golf, but to learn important life
lessons and the nine core values of the program.
2011 Teen Volunteers of the Year
“I have learned that I like working with kids, and I have learned
about how they are and act, and how I can help them.”
Jonathan Williams, NEWPORT NEWS FAMILY YMCA
“I’ve learned that not only do I care for my close friends and
family, but that I can be open and caring towards a child I just
met or another leader that I work with.”
Shannon Spence, HAMPTON FAMILY YMCA
“Volunteering at the Y in Youth Super Sports gave me more
patience and understanding in working with young children
and taught me how to handle more responsibilities.”
Danny McGrath, NORTHERN NECK FAMILY YMCA
Young people need a variety of positive experiences and qualities to grow up to be caring, competent, and responsible
members of the community. A healthy outlook on themselves, their role in the community, and how they can have impact

surrounding us today and to become our community leaders in the future.
I absolutely love the Y and the great friends I have come to know
in the “6 a.m. fun bunch!” I love Mathews, and whatever I can do
to make this a better place to live and improve the quality of life
for its residents, I am on board.
Nelda Gibbs, MATHEWS FAMILY YMCA
Club, but I continue volunteering for the people I have met
at the Y. Everyone is so kind and friendly; it’s like having a
second family. The Y has taught me many different ways to
help the community, one of them being how to interact with
all types of people.”
Jakob Torres, R.F. WILKINSON FAMILY YMCA
“I chose to be a volunteer YMCA counselor because, when
I was younger and went to the Y, I had a positive and fun
experience. I loved it so much, I decided to be a role model
for kids, and do my part giving back through the Y.”
Haley Allen, RICHMOND COUNTY FAMILY YMCA
“Volunteering at the Y has always been something that I’ve

in my abilities through the Y’s Leaders’ Club. As a volunteer
coach for swim team, I have learned how to interact with kids
in positive ways that allow them to accomplish their goals.
Most importantly, I have experienced the satisfaction that
comes with volunteering.”
Blair Nelson, LUTER FAMILY YMCA
“I’ve learned that volunteering doesn’t take a huge heart, only
an open one.”
Zachary Crawford, VICTORY FAMILY YMCA
The Y is a place where you can develop a healthy lifestyle and have a
sense of responsibility, all while making new friends. Volunteerism is a
wonderful way to give back to our home county.
- Shirley
My summer job during college was serving as a camp counselor for youth,
so from an early age, I believed in what the Y offers a community. Several
years ago, when I heard Northumberland County was planning to organize
a YMCA, I was ready to do what I could to make this a reality. - Edee
The team of Shirley Haynie & Edith Withers, NORTHUMBERLAND FAMILY YMCA
“I have learned there are opportunities for me to be a role
model for kids. Volunteering for camp this past summer, I
had the chance to hold some responsibility in the program
and I felt proud knowing I was a part of the team. This is the
kind of career I’d like to have one day.”
D.J. Hall, NORTHUMBERLAND FAMILY YMCA
“Volunteering at the Y has taught me many things. I have
learned how to be more responsible and that I am capable
of being a leader. I have also learned that I can make a
difference in peoples’ lives. When you see the little girl or
boy’s eyes light up and a smile spread across their face, you
realize everything that you do is worth it!”
Molly Perkins, MIDDLESEX FAMILY YMCA
“It’s fun to give something back to others and rewarding to
see the change in them and myself.”
Aja Jackson, WESTMORELAND FAMILY YMCA
“I like volunteering because it’s a way to help the community.
Also, it’s a great way to spend time and help others. Blue
Ridge Leaders’ school really opened my eyes to other ways to
get out and help others in our community.”
Tatyana Gresham, GREATER WEST POINT FAMILY YMCA
I choose to volunteer for the Y because the Y provides so much for
such a broad range of our community. Children and adults of all ages
have a place at the Y that is safe, inclusive, active, and grounded
in the principles of building strong kids, strong families and strong
communities. I feel my efforts at the Y have a direct and lasting effect
on our community, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of
the Y.
SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE
THROUGH BRIGHT BEGINNINGS
I walk away completely humbled, knowing that
just one thing you can do can impact someone
so much.
- Alan Cole
The Y believes that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are
and what they can achieve, and the Y listens and responds to our communities’
most critical social needs. “That’s why Bright Beginnings is so important,” says
Alan Cole, a husband and father of two, who has both contributed to and been
a volunteer shopper with the children in the Bright Beginnings program for the
last six years. “No child should have to worry about where their next meal is
coming from, or have to go home to an empty house, or worry about having
the clothes they need for school.”
“In their formative years, all kids need someone standing behind them to give
them a boost; I think the Y does that. The Y acts as a safe house for kids; they
know it’s a place where they can go and be just a kid. I volunteer with Bright
Beginnings in particular because all children deserve an equal opportunity to
do well, and they need to start from that gate of the
beginning of a school year with the same opportunities.
“I have to tell you that I am not a shopper when it is
for me, but it’s a big kick for me to go and help the kids

home and told my wife, Tanya, about it and told her she had to go with me; we scheduled ourselves to go with
another shopping trip that same week.
“I think the thing I take away most from my experiences spending time with the kids on Bright Beginnings’
shopping days is the sheer delight in just seeing that child feel so much better about themselves. I see their

some new nice clothes to start school with and spending a few hours with someone who listens. I talk with
them through the day and tell them, ‘You can do whatever you set your mind to do.’ It is very important to
me to be a part of that. I walk away completely humbled, knowing that just one thing you can do can impact
someone so much. It’s an honor to spend time with young folks and see them respond in a positive way, and see
a brighter future for them.”

few years ago, but Alan has stayed loyal to the Bright Beginnings program. Alan spoke with Freddy Cobb about
the Y’s Bright Beginnings program, and now Cobb makes contributions to help with buying the supplies. Alan
personally invites others to get involved with Bright Beginnings, either by being a volunteer shopper, donating

will remember the goodness that came to them; and when they grow up, they will be the generous people.”
I volunteer because my kids love being at the Y after school and the Y
teaches life values to the kids.
YMCA Programs Strengthen the Core of Your Community
People are the core strength of every community, and when people are strong and healthy in spirit, mind and body, they are able to
work together better, to help each other more, and to make positive changes to make their community an even better place to live
and work for everyone.
With a presence in thousands of communities across the nation, the Y works every day to make sure everyone has the opportunity

and social skills and develop positive values. Kids want to exert energy, discover who they are and what they can achieve, and be
accepted among each other. Adults want to learn more, do more, and live more healthily. We nurture life lessons in kids, foster
health and well-being among people of any age, bring people together to pursue passions old and new, and provide mutual support
for everyone in our neighborhoods.
As a Y volunteer, I’ve been fortunate to work with a great group of
leaders that serves the community. I have made many friends through
my involvement, but I’ve also been able to make a difference in peoples’
lives. Volunteering at the Y is a real blessing for me, and a rewarding
experience that I’ll never forget.
