NASC, in Ortega’s nomination package.
In 2010 Ortega coordinated and supervised
65 volunteers for Miracle Camp,
which is dedicated to raising the morale of
children afflicted with multiple disabilities
ranging from arthritis to cancer. His efforts
in this venture culminated more than 520
hours directed toward cleaning, organizing
and preparing the camp prior to its opening.
His leadership also led 15 volunteers in
planning and executing a carnival for children
of deployed service members.
Ortega also coordinated 32 volunteers to
help run the Helen Caro Elementary
Carnival. These volunteers helped set-up,
organize and run the carnival. These efforts
also provided key safety observers on rides
at the carnival, cooked food and ran booths
for the children, ensuring a successful carnival
for parents and children.
Ortega personally dedicated more than
500 volunteer hours implementing a weekly
volunteer program, responsible for more
than 3,200 man-hours in restoring the USS
Alabama.
Ortega’s accomplishments have
allowed him to shine above his peers, proving
that his leadership, devotion, dedication
and commitment offer an unparallel standard
for all Sailors to emulate. Because of
these achievements Ortega has received the
honor of the Margaret Flowers Civic
Award for 2010.
separate, three-story dorms, connected by covered
breezeways. A large “Heritage Hall” will be located in
the center building, serving as hospitality room for
friends and family of the officers in training.
This project is unique to the base as it will abide by
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Silver standards, an internationally recognized
“green building” certification system. The LEED initiative
uses strategies aimed at improving performance of
energy conservation, water efficiency, reduction of carbon
dioxide emissions and improved indoor environmental
and E-7s in the AZ, AT, AO, AM, LS and
YN ratings.
“Applicants do not need to have F/A-18
experience,” Hosterman explained. “The
Blue Angels have a very comprehensive
preparation process that new team members
go through. We are looking for the
most qualified men and women in the
Navy and Marine Corps. Team members
exceptional communication skills, the
ability to work as a team and the desire to
Blue Angels CMC (AW/SW) Yoshimi
Core said enlisted applicants should be
exemplary Sailors and Marines, who are
willing to work outside their area of expertise
and enjoy traveling.
“Our command mission is to enhance
recruiting and retention efforts, but we also
serve as ambassadors of goodwill, and bolster
pride and patriotism in American citizens.
It takes a special person to be able to
do that naturally,” said Core.
Tomaszeski echoed the master chief’s
call for applicants and how selective the
process of choosing future team members
is.
“All officers who meet the required
qualifications are encouraged to apply,”
Tomaszeski said. “Even if you are not
interested, maybe you know someone who
is. The opportunity to demonstrate the
teamwork and dedication of our military to
its citizens across the country is a rare privilege.
We represent the Navy and Marine
Corps, and it is important to us that the individuals
selected are the most balanced and
proficient in their fields.
“Applying is easy; however, once we
enter the decision-making process we take
a lot of time to ensure the right applicant is
chosen. We have a 65-year tradition of
excellence to uphold,” Tomaszeski said.
NMCRS from page 1
Over the past few years contributions have been
decreasing while the amount that the NMCRS has disbursed
has been increasing.
During 2010, NMCRS disbursed $49.9 million in
interest-free loans and grants in response to 99,854
requests for assistance. In comparison with 2009, those
numbers represent a 5.3 percent increase in financial aid
and nearly a 10 percent increase in cases.
NMCRS helped nearly one in every five active duty
Sailors and Marines during the past 12 months. Those
numbers include $15.1 million in quick assist loans to
51,309 clients, $1.3 million to assist 771 widows and
$220,000 in combat casualty assistance to 585 clients.
These numbers reflect the capacity in which the
NMCRS is utilized within the naval community.
