Coupon # 20 (Re-<strong>in</strong>jection well): A very dark grey deposit on the test pl<strong>at</strong>e. The deposit is very f<strong>in</strong>e<br />

gra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> does not show any flow b<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g. It is adherent to the coupon pl<strong>at</strong>e. The coupon is fully<br />

covered with f<strong>in</strong>e white gra<strong>in</strong>ed deposit.<br />

Coupon # 10 (Well NJ-14): The coupon was completely covered with dark grey f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> coarse<br />

deposits. The coarse deposits flake off slightly but the f<strong>in</strong>e deposit is very adherent to the coupon. The<br />

flakes are f<strong>in</strong>e gra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> dark grey <strong>in</strong> colour. Sulphide crystals are abundant.<br />

Coupon # 25 (Well NJ-22): Dark grey to black deposits formed on the pl<strong>at</strong>e. On some parts of the<br />

pl<strong>at</strong>e the deposits are r<strong>at</strong>her thick. The thickness was not uniform. Occasionally the deposit flakes off<br />

though <strong>in</strong> most <strong>in</strong>stances it is adherent onto the pl<strong>at</strong>e. Sulphide crystals not nearly as abundant as <strong>in</strong><br />

scale from NJ-14. Very f<strong>in</strong>e gra<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

Coupon # 17 (At entry to re-<strong>in</strong>jection well): A very f<strong>in</strong>e th<strong>in</strong> sheet of deposit on the pl<strong>at</strong>e. The deposit<br />

was light grey <strong>in</strong> colour, had partly peeled off from the pl<strong>at</strong>e when the coupon holder was be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

removed from the <strong>in</strong>sertion po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>at</strong> the delay tank. No signs of flak<strong>in</strong>g. White to brown coloured<br />

crystals.<br />

Coupon # 18 (At entry to re-<strong>in</strong>jection well): Dark grey <strong>and</strong> white crystals were distributed on the pl<strong>at</strong>e:<br />

The white crystals have different shapes <strong>and</strong> sizes <strong>and</strong> are widespread on the coupon pl<strong>at</strong>e. Some<br />

crystals are glass like, some are white but not sh<strong>in</strong>y, occasional brown crystals probably silica or pyrite<br />

<strong>in</strong> the scale. Some reddish crystals were present <strong>in</strong> this coupon scale probably haem<strong>at</strong>ite. Some white<br />

crystals embedded <strong>in</strong> the background.<br />

Coupon # 5 (At entry to re-<strong>in</strong>jection well): The deposit was dark grey <strong>and</strong> non-uniform whitebrownish<br />

crystals were widely embedded <strong>in</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>er background. Some crystals look glass like.<br />

Coupon # 19 (At re-<strong>in</strong>jection well): A very th<strong>in</strong> layer of f<strong>in</strong>e dark grey to black evenly distributed<br />

deposit on the coupon.<br />

7.3.2 Fourier transform <strong>in</strong>frared measurement<br />

IR spectra of scales formed <strong>at</strong> the wellheads of <strong>wells</strong> NJ-14, well NJ-22, separ<strong>at</strong>ed w<strong>at</strong>er after the he<strong>at</strong><br />

exchangers, <strong>at</strong> entry to the retention tank <strong>and</strong> just upstream of the <strong>in</strong>jection well are shown <strong>in</strong> Figure<br />

34. The spectra of the samples from the wellheads show strong similarities. So do samples of scales<br />

formed from separ<strong>at</strong>ed w<strong>at</strong>er. There is, however, a considerable difference between the two groups of<br />

samples. The IR spectra largely reflect Si-O bond<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> do not provide <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion on the presence<br />

or absence of sulphide phases.<br />

Molecular w<strong>at</strong>er is present <strong>in</strong> all the scales as <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ed by vibr<strong>at</strong>ional b<strong>and</strong>s <strong>at</strong> 1630-1641 <strong>and</strong> 1410-<br />

1443 cm -1 . In the region 2923-2842 cm -1 the wavelength b<strong>and</strong> could be associ<strong>at</strong>ed with C-H groups<br />

<strong>and</strong> this could be due to oil or grease <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>e contam<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion. The b<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the region 3533-3541<br />

cm -1 is caused by OH-groups <strong>in</strong> the crystal l<strong>at</strong>tice of bonded H 2 O. Wavelength <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> scale samples<br />

from separ<strong>at</strong>ed w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>at</strong> 1100 cm -1 with shoulders on both the low energy sides reflect a Si-O-Si<br />

structure characteristic of amorphous silica. In the scale samples from the wellheads, these b<strong>and</strong>s are<br />

shifted to about 1030 cm -1 due to the presence other silicon compounds, e.g. silic<strong>at</strong>es. They resemble<br />

those of the analcime-leucite group Na, K <strong>and</strong> Mg may have entered the structure. Medium strength<br />

peaks <strong>at</strong> 442-465 cm -1 are presented <strong>in</strong> all scale samples. They are caused by bend<strong>in</strong>g vibr<strong>at</strong>ions of an<br />

O-Si-O structure. In the scale samples from the wellheads, the wavelength b<strong>and</strong>s <strong>at</strong> 723-790 cm -1 are<br />

probably due to symmetrical stretch<strong>in</strong>g of tetrahedrally co-ord<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ed Si <strong>and</strong> Al.<br />

7.3.3 X-ray diffraction measurements<br />

X-ray diffraction p<strong>at</strong>terns revealed by all the scale samples except from the re-<strong>in</strong>jection well are<br />

shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 35.<br />
