th<strong>at</strong> of sea w<strong>at</strong>er. Carbon dioxide is the most abundant gas, > 95 %, correspond<strong>in</strong>g to ~2000 ppm <strong>in</strong><br />

the reservoir fluid. Compared to Olkaria, H 2 S <strong>and</strong> H 2 concentr<strong>at</strong>ions are rel<strong>at</strong>ively low.<br />

The reservoir w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>in</strong> Svartsengi is two-thirds sea w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>and</strong> one-third meteoric w<strong>at</strong>er by orig<strong>in</strong> as<br />

<strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ed by its Cl content. This parent w<strong>at</strong>er has also been modified by reactions with the basaltic<br />

rock <strong>in</strong> a fashion similar to the w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>at</strong> Reykjanes. As <strong>at</strong> Reykjanes, CO 2 gas makes up the major gas<br />

<strong>in</strong> the steam , ~ 95 vol.% . The concentr<strong>at</strong>ions of H 2 S <strong>and</strong> H 2 are low rel<strong>at</strong>ive to Olkaria.<br />

W<strong>at</strong>er discharged from <strong>wells</strong> <strong>at</strong> Nesjavellir, which is meteoric by orig<strong>in</strong> is very low <strong>in</strong> dissolved solids<br />

(Table 1 b <strong>in</strong> Appendix A). Silica is the most abundant dissolved solid. The chloride content is 100-<br />

200 ppm. The cause of the low Cl concentr<strong>at</strong>ions is the low Cl content of the basalts with which the<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er has <strong>in</strong>teracted. Carbon dioxide is the major gas component <strong>in</strong> steam. Hydrogen sulphide <strong>and</strong><br />

hydrogen concentr<strong>at</strong>ions are rel<strong>at</strong>ively elev<strong>at</strong>ed compared to well fluids <strong>at</strong> Olkaria, Reykjanes <strong>and</strong><br />

Svartsengi.<br />
