3. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS<br />
3.1 Sample collection<br />
At Reykjanes, Svartsengi <strong>and</strong> Nesjavellir,<strong>and</strong> other Icel<strong>and</strong>ic fields both steam <strong>and</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er are collected<br />
<strong>at</strong> the same pressure us<strong>in</strong>g a Webre separ<strong>at</strong>or.<br />
At Olkaria various<br />
methods have been<br />
applied to collect<br />
samples of w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>and</strong><br />
steam from the wetsteam<br />
well discharges.<br />
Some of these methods<br />
are described by Ellis<br />
<strong>and</strong> Mahon (1977) <strong>and</strong><br />
Arnόrsson et al.<br />
(2000). One of the<br />
methods <strong>in</strong>volves the<br />
use of a Webre<br />
separ<strong>at</strong>or, which is<br />
connected to a twophase<br />
pipel<strong>in</strong>e th<strong>at</strong><br />
conveys the total<br />
discharge to an<br />
<strong>at</strong>mospheric silencer<br />
(Figure 8).<br />
By this method<br />
sampl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volves the<br />
collection of steam samples<br />
under pressure from the<br />
Webre separ<strong>at</strong>or <strong>and</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er<br />
from the weirbox. Steam<br />
samples collected <strong>in</strong> this<br />
way are mostly from the<br />
<strong>wells</strong> th<strong>at</strong> are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
discharge tested or<br />
explor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>wells</strong> <strong>and</strong> a<br />
number of production <strong>wells</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> the Olkaria East<br />
production field th<strong>at</strong> share a<br />
common separ<strong>at</strong>or st<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
In the Olkaria North East<br />
Field which produces steam<br />
for the Olkaria II power<br />
plant sampl<strong>in</strong>g of steam <strong>and</strong><br />
w<strong>at</strong>er will be carried out by<br />
FIGURE 8: Steam is collected from a Webre separ<strong>at</strong>or on a two-phase<br />
pipel<strong>in</strong>e upstream from the <strong>at</strong>mospheric silencer <strong>and</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er from the<br />
weirbox, a part of the steam (X w-a ) discharged from the <strong>at</strong>mospheric<br />
silencer is not sampled, i.e. the steam which forms by depressuris<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
boil<strong>in</strong>g from the pressure <strong>in</strong> Webre separ<strong>at</strong>or to <strong>at</strong>mosphere<br />
FIGURE 9: Steam is collected from the steam separ<strong>at</strong>or <strong>and</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er<br />
from the weirbox, the steam (X s-a ) discharged from the <strong>at</strong>mospheric<br />
silencer is not sampled. This steam forms by depressuris<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
boil<strong>in</strong>g from pressure <strong>in</strong> the steam separ<strong>at</strong>or<br />
to <strong>at</strong>mospheric pressure<br />
the use of a Webre separ<strong>at</strong>or. For production <strong>wells</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Olkaria East Production Field, steam<br />
samples were collected from the steam l<strong>in</strong>e downstream of the wellhead separ<strong>at</strong>or us<strong>in</strong>g a sta<strong>in</strong>less<br />
steel tub<strong>in</strong>g (Figure 9).<br />
W<strong>at</strong>er samples were collected from the weirbox. A fraction of the discharge is not sampled when the<br />
w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>and</strong> steam samples are collected <strong>at</strong> different pressures as expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> Figs. 8 <strong>and</strong> 9. As<br />
expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> section 5.2 below, it is assumed when calcul<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g aquifer w<strong>at</strong>er composition th<strong>at</strong> the<br />
