The data center is frequently referred to as the heart<br />
of a business, as it is from here that production and<br />
administration processes are controlled. Failures lead to<br />

Single cables – laid-worn out-forgotten<br />
Not only is the laying of new cables difficult and time-consuming,<br />
but it is also virtually impossible to remove old cables, with<br />
the result that they often end up simply being cut out or left in<br />
place. This means that there is no possibility of reuse or recovery.<br />
An unobstructed flow of cooling air is out of the question in<br />
this case. Only a higher volumetric flow rate and/or a lower<br />
air temperature – both of which involve additional costs and<br />

The structure<br />
Generic communications cabling systems are defined in<br />
standards EN 50173-1 and ISO/IEC 11801. In addition, specific<br />
requirements for data centers are defined in EN 50173-5<br />
and ISO/IEC 24764.<br />
The cabling used in data centers consists of three<br />
subsystems:<br />

Fiber types<br />
When using MM fibers, the requirements of class OF-300, using<br />
OM3 fibers, must be met as a minimum. Single-mode fibers<br />
must comply with category OS1 or OS2, whereby OS1 fibers<br />
do not meet the attenuation requirements in each case.<br />
The max. extension is 2,000 m. In data centers the main<br />
distribution cabling is frequently designed using fiber optic<br />
technology, while in smaller networks the external network<br />
interface (ENI) is connected directly to the zone distributor (ZD).<br />
The standards describe various models for flexible and fixed<br />
connections in and between the subsystems.<br />
The cabling of the main and zone distribution must, according<br />
to ISO/IEC 24764, meet the requirements of class E A<br />
for copper<br />
technology and transmission classes OF-300, OF-500 and<br />
OF-2000 for fiber optic technology as a minimum.<br />

In office cabling (EN 50173-2), consolidation points (CPs)<br />
between floor distributor (FD) and telecommunication outlet<br />
(TO) offer extremely flexible solutions for rapidly changing office<br />
configurations. The CP can be installed in raised floors, inserted<br />
ceilings, columns or ducts. From there, flexible cables (CP cables)<br />
lead to the data outlets at the workplace.<br />

on the floor or zone distributor side makes troublesome screwing<br />
and the use of special tools unnecessary. The patch side is covered<br />
by a hinged cover with a strip bush as dust protection. The incoming<br />
cables and the CP/patch cords can be held by cable ties. The housing<br />
can be earthed if necessary.<br />
In data centers, CPs as local distribution points (LDP) can provide<br />
an additional patching option between zone distributor (ZD)<br />
and equipment outlet (EO) (EN 50173-5). The CPs are connected to<br />
the EO using flexible pre-assembled cables fitted with jacks and<br />
connectors, known as consolidation point cables.<br />
The CP cables pass through the raised floor via the necessary floor<br />
outlets which are installed in the base plate. VarioLine ® CP floor<br />
outlets can be closed flush with the floor when they are not required<br />
and are set upright to pass cables through. The cover then also<br />
protects the cables as they come out.<br />
The robust VarioLine ® CPs are made of zinc-plated sheet steel and<br />
are available in three sizes for 6, 12 and 24 channels. The modular<br />
structure ensures that most Cu and FO systems are suitable for<br />

To meet the extensive requirements for fast point-to-point<br />
data transmission applications in modern data centers,<br />
<strong>LEONI</strong> offers fully pre-assembled high-speed cables that exceed<br />
the requirements of the IEEE 802.3-2005 Type 10GBase-CX4<br />
standard and of the IBTA (InfiniBand Trade Association) standard.<br />
Compared with conventional CX4 and InfiniBand ® cable solutions,<br />
<strong>LEONI</strong> patch chords offer improved electromagnetic compatibility,<br />
which is achieved using special dual screening. This technology<br />
ensures interference-free and complete data transmission across<br />
the entire transmission path, right up as far as the connector.<br />
Thanks to the use of high-quality <strong>LEONI</strong> ParaLink ® cables,<br />
the systems have typically low attenuation characteristics<br />
at transmission distances of up to 17 m (10GBase-CX4) and a data<br />
transmission rate of 10 Gb/s per channel.<br />
CX4 patch cords<br />
<strong>LEONI</strong> CX4 and InfiniBand ® patch cords are manufactured semiautomatically.<br />
Manual production has been reduced in order to<br />
achieve a high level of uniformity in the manufacturing process.<br />
EDS patch cords can be used in data centers for cabling switches,<br />
routers and servers in Storage Area Networks (SAN) or High<br />
