Various Events At The Courthouse
Studios And Gallery
The Courthouse Studios and Gallery is located
in a late Georgian courthouse built c. 1800. It
has been sympathetically converted to its
present use by architect John O’Reilly. The
building retains much of its original fabric
such as its walls of locally quarried stone as
well as its original scale and form. Interesting
architectural features include its original
Georgian windows and fanlight. It was opened
as visual arts space and a gallery in 2007 with
the aid of access funding from the Department
of Arts. Contact the venue for details of events.
Famine Memorial Mass
The Poor Law Guardians purchased three acres
to facilitate the burial of famine victims as the
existing graveyards of Moynoe and St. Cronan’s
were beyond capacity. This particular site has
become known as the Casaoireach. The name
is derived from three Irish words, ‘cath siar-iad’,
which means throw them back. It came about
as a result of a scarcity of coffins. The coffins
were rigged with a hinged bottom. When it was
lowered into the grave, a lever was pulled
which opened the bottom and released the
body. Even in death, those poor misfortunate
people suffered indignity. This Mass is held to
remember the victims of the Great Hunger and
is held at the burial grounds of the famine
victims at Casaoireach, between Tuamgraney
and Bodyke. This site was eventually taken over
by East Clare Heritage who cleared it by hand.
The trenches into which our ancestors were
dumped can still be clearly seen. The site has
been planted with 18 varieties of the
indigenous trees of County Clare and some
shrubs. What better way is there to remember
the forgotten and unfortunate victims of the
last Dark Age in Irish history than with the
living gift of trees?
