The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea and the<br />
Red Sea and extends for a total length of 101 miles (162km).<br />
The Mediterranean entrance is situated at Port Said and<br />
the Red Sea entrance at Port Tewfik.<br />
There is no restriction on the length of a vessel, max beam<br />
is 70.1m and max draught is 17.68m. These dimensions<br />
can vary as the Canal Authority operates a breadth and<br />
draught table. The Canal is dredged to a depth of 25m.<br />
The Canal operates a lock-free transit system with passage<br />
by convoy, 2 southbound and 1 northbound daily, max 40<br />
vessels per convoy except the 2nd southbound convoy<br />
which has a maximum of 15 vessels. The average<br />
transit time for the southbound convoy is 14 hours<br />
and for the northbound is 10 hours.<br />

There are three crossing points under construction at<br />
present. A bridge over the Canal at Km48, a railway<br />
bridge also over the Canal at Km64 and a tunnel under<br />
the Canal called Ahmed Hamdi close to El Shallufa.<br />
