The term “innovation” is closely related to the word “novelty,” since the
ideas generated should introduce a sense of freshness. At Apple, the
late Steve Jobs made this happen with the creation of the first
handheld touch devices with single-button functionality. Apple was not
the first to make a touch-based handheld device, but it added novelty
through its iTunes business model and single-button operation.
In yet another instance, the smartphone caused a paradigm shift in the
way mobile communications (both interpersonal conversations and
commerce) ensued. Innovators preserved the unique features of a
telephone, while combining it with other personal and professional
features.
