AFTERSCHOOL<br />
SNACK SHACK<br />
Fast Turkey Chili<br />
INGREDIENTS: 1 tbsp. vegetable oil; 1 medium onion (chopped); 1 medium red bell pepper;<br />
1 medium green bell pepper (both peppers - cored, seeded and diced into 1/2 inch pieces);<br />
2 celery stalks (thinly sliced); 1lb. ground turkey; 4 cloves garlic (minced); 1/4 cup mild<br />
chili powder; 1 28-oz. can <strong>of</strong> crushed tomatoes; 1 15-oz. can <strong>of</strong> pinto beans<br />
(drained); 1 tsp. oregano; 1 9-oz. bag <strong>of</strong> frozen corn.<br />
DIRECTIONS: Heat a large pot over high heat and add the oil -<br />
spreading it to evenly to coat the bottom. When the<br />
oil is hot, add the onion, peppers, celery and turkey to<br />
cook - stirring <strong>of</strong>ten until the turkey has been cooked<br />
through (approx. 2 min.). Add the garlic and cook<br />
for an additional minute. Then add the chili powder<br />
and cook, stirring continuously, for 1 minute.<br />
Add the tomatoes, beans, oregano and salt -<br />
stir well to combine. Bring the entire chili<br />
mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low<br />
and simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes<br />
while stirring occasionally. Then add<br />
the frozen corn - stir to combine -<br />
and cook for 10 minutes.<br />

Halloween Health & Safety Tips<br />
S: Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, s<strong>of</strong>t and flexible.<br />
A: Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.<br />
F: Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.<br />
E: Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them.<br />
And make sure to limit the amount <strong>of</strong> treats you eat.<br />
H: Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you.<br />
A: Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to<br />
prevent skin and eye irritation.<br />
L: Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks.<br />
L: Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.<br />
O: Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge <strong>of</strong> the road facing traffic to stay safe.<br />
W: Wear well-fitting masks, costumes & shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips & falls.<br />
E: Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats unless<br />
you know the cook well.<br />
E: Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Otherwise, stay outside.<br />
N: Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear<br />
flame-resistant costumes.<br />
