By: Wei Fong Kam
By Jaen-Eun Lee
The Singapore Nautical Run, organised
by Port Authority of Singapore, held
on 10 October 2008, drew more than
1,300 participants from the Maritime
Community and raised S$330,000 for
the President’s Challenge and the
Straits Times School Pocket Money
Fund.
Odfjell was invited to participate and
with a donation of S$10,000; we could
nominate a team of up to 6 runners in
the competitive team race and have our
logo displayed at the Start/Finish line.
Bow Peace - The Atlantic Shots
By Wpr. M.S. Orti
To support the company’s program
on physical fitness, the Master of
Bow Peace, Capt. Armando Antenor
suggested to set up a basketball team
to play for the so-called “Cross Atlantic
League”.
A basketball court was prepared at
the bridge deck. Nets were raised and
fastened to the rails to stop the ball
from falling into the water. The floor
area was made oil-free and water-free
to avoid accidents. The bridge and the
engine watch were on their respective
place so as not to make violations on
the STCW.
The Cross-Atlantic League started while
Bow Peace crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
Four teams articipated: The Graco
Electrostatics, The PV Breakers, The
Piston Hotrods, and The Power Packs.
What an entertainment to see the crew
members showing their skills and style!
It was like watching the game of players
on the television screen and it took
one Saturday and two Sundays of fatburning
action before the league ended.
Chong quickly volunteered to do their bit
for charity and although they were not
competitive runners and despite the hot,
humid weather, they did a wonderful
race, became 29 out of a total of 89
teams. Cheers and well done.
This is a wonderful chance to promote
our company and to show our
appreciation to MPA for their support to
the maritime industry in Singapore. But
best of all, we contributed to charity!
Odfjell, being one of the key donors, was
awarded a token of appreciation. On stage
Gareth Williams receiving the token from
Minister Raymond Lim.
An awarding ceremony gave credit to all
for being good sportsmen throughout
the game and a certificate of recognition
was given to each team. The successful
event was concluded by a lively Saturday
party making everyone satisfied and
happy.
During the 8th Foreign Company Day
2008 on October 30, Mr. Han-Kyu Lee,
President/CEO of Odfjell Terminal
(Korea) received the 2nd Foreign
Investment Award from the Prime
Minister of Korea for his contribution of
foreign investment inducement.
It is rather hard to get nominated
to receive such an award but this is
actually the second time for OTK, as the
previous President/CEO of OTK Mr. Rob
Meijboom received a bronze medal in
2003.
The Foreign Company Day is organized
by Korea Foreign Company Association,
Seoul and is attended by investors,
diplomatic representatives and around
500 CEO’s of foreign investment
companies. The contribution of foreign
companies has an impact on foreign
exchange reserve effect, production
and employment effect, abroad
balance effect, technology transfer
effect (70% R&D investment by foreign
companies), facilitating corporate and
industry restructuring (global standard
management) of the Korean economy.
In Memory of Milko Tercic
By Dan Odfjell
Milko, our Chief Corporate Engineer for
more than 30 years, passed away on
July 14 at the age of 82. Milko, whose
full name was Remigio Carlos Tercic,
came onboard in Argentina in 1969
when we were constructing Tagsa, our
terminal in Buenos Aires. I hired him
and liked him instantly, and learned
to respect him more and more as the
years passed by. Milko, the iron man, as
I used to refer to him, moved with us to
Brazil, for our Granel Quimica terminal
project in Santos, and subsequently
on to what became his permanent
residence Houston, Texas. Here for just
over 20 years he put all his talent to
good use in our building Baytank, now
We believe that the importance of
foreign companies within the Korean
economic structure will be increased.
Odfjell Terminals (Houston) Inc. At the
age of 70 the iron man even took on a
2-year assignment in North China, a
tough job of building our first Chinese
terminal, the Dalian terminal.
Milko was a demanding but kind person.
He was methodical and took his job
seriously. A bit stubborn, but I always
knew I could trust him, both personally
and professionally. I have worked with
many good men. Milko was amongst
the very best. I am very grateful to
Milko, and I suffer with all his other
friends and with his wife and his family
at his loss. God bless Milko’s memory.
We also expect that Odfjell will play a
key role in Korean economy as a FDI
company.
