School Works
During the holidays, some Department of Education approved work was completed around the
school. The COLA playground was re-surfaced. The loose pavers around the garden area near the
flag pole were removed and the garden area was extended. A garden was also established adjacent
to 5/6C and 3W classrooms. This work will ensure the removal of many trip hazards and greatly
improve the grounds of our school.
Lost Property
use a permanent laundry marker to label clothes, hats and shoes, or sew or iron on
personalised labels
go through your child’s bag with him/her each night
check that labels haven’t faded with washing
look for lost items in the lost property basket on the verandah between 1/2C and 2PR or your
child’s classroom
Parent/Teacher Information Evening
This year, our Parent/Teacher Information Evening is being held on Tuesday 12 February to coincide
with our first P&C meeting. The evening will commence at 5.45pm, with Kindergarten, 1B, 1/2C, 3W
and 3/4F holding their information sessions. At 6.30 pm, 2PR, 4P, 5/6C and 5/6P will hold their
information sessions. Hopefully parents will be able to meet all of their children’s teachers on the
night. However, should times clash, please see the teacher to arrange a before or after school time to
meet the teacher and collect any hand-outs.
The purpose of the evening is twofold. Firstly, the teachers provide general information regarding
homework expectations, work expectations, reporting to parents, excursions, interviews with
teachers and other general matters. Secondly, the class teachers outline general class and school
routines, an overview of each Key Learning Area and class related information. This is an information
evening and not an opportunity to discuss individual student progress. For individual student
matters, interviews may be arranged with the class teacher.
The P&C meeting will start at 7.30pm, in the school library and it is hoped that many parents will
stay to join the meeting. At the P&C meeting, an overview of the school’s focus areas for 2013 will
be presented, as well as information regarding class structures. A note will be sent home containing
further information about the evening.
Swimming Carnival
The 2013 Galston Public School Swimming Carnival will take place on Friday 8
February at Galston Aquatic Centre, starting at 9.00am. All students from Years 3 – 6
will attend. Students in Year 2 who are turning 8 years old this year, and who can
competently swim 50 metres freestyle, are also invited to compete in the 8 years and junior events.
A note regarding the carnival was sent home today.
Newsletter by Email
The school newsletter will continue to be emailed to all households. A number of hard copies will be
held in the school office each week for those families without email facilities to collect. We are doing
this as part of our environmental sustainability focus, in order to reduce our carbon footprint and to
preserve as much of the environment as possible for our future generations.
School Information
Have you changed your postal address, email address, phone numbers or work details? It is essential
that we have correct student information. Please inform the school office if you need to update this
important information. Thank you.
Thank You
Thank you to Mrs Sandlin, Mrs Milne and Mrs Koorey who organised some plants
for the office verandah. The plants look fantastic and certainly improve the
appearance of our school.
Thank you to Neil Turrell who took some time out of his busy schedule to adjust the
front doors to the office. Thank you also to Neil’s assistant who did an amazing job
helping with the modifications.
Library
We have another exciting and enjoyable year planned in our school library. Each class spends one
hour a week in the library during which time they have lessons and borrow books to take home.
The library program aims to foster creative thinking, problem solving and information literacy and
technology skills. The students are given the opportunity to view and read a variety of types of
literature and are encouraged to be enthusiastic readers.
Children will be able to borrow books from Week 2. Please ensure that your child has a library bag.
He/she can bring a suitable bag from home or purchase a GPS one from the Uniform Shop. It is
compulsory to bring a library bag for borrowing books from Kindergarten to Year 4. It is not
compulsory for Years 5 and 6 but still advisable because it protects the books from damage and loss.
The 2013 Library Program is outlined below:
Tuesday: 3/4F, KE, 1/2C
Wednesday: 3W, 5/6P, 2PR
Thursday: 1B, 5/6C, KP, 4P
Please note that Kindergarten will not commence borrowing until later in Term 1. If you have any
concerns regarding the library, please contact Mrs Saxby.
Parent help in the library
If you would like to occasionally assist in the library (up to 4 times a year for 1 or 2 hours) please
complete the Library Helpers’ Form below and return it to the school office. We need help putting
books on shelves, putting up displays, cutting cardboard, etc. It is a pleasant atmosphere to work in
and a great way to meet other parents as well.
synchronise with the Friday trading. From next week, all online orders and payments must be
received by 5pm Wednesday to enable orders to be filled during usual Uniform Shop trading the
following Friday afternoon (from 2:30pm – 3:30pm). Orders requesting delivery to your child will
Welcome back! This week you will receive a copy of the Term 1 summer menu. If you do not
receive a copy you can always collect one from the office or from the school’s fantastic website (go
to the Parent Information tab).
To our wonderful volunteers, most of you will have contacted Kathy Ballinger already regarding
changes to the Term 1 roster that was issued last year. You will, of course, be given the opportunity
to request shifts for Term 2 as we know a lot of your commitments outside school may have
changed in the new year. Kath will be issuing a note in the coming weeks for you to nominate the
hours that you volunteer and to invite some great new volunteers. For our Wednesday volunteers,
please note there are now only two people rostered on Wednesday for lunchtime opening, therefore
it is essential that you are present for your shift.
Due to the swimming carnival being held on 8 February the canteen will not be opening fully until
Friday 15 February. The canteen will be operating on Wednesdays as usual, opening at lunch for
