is pleased to donate the proceeds of this evening’s concert
to the following organizations:
Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters
Tina Edel, Vice President
Lucia Lu, Treasurer
Mary Doughty, Secretary
C
The Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters was formed in July 1991 to advocate for music education
at Monroe-Woodbury. In this organization’s 22 years of existence, our dedicated members have made a
significant contribution in support of our exceptional music program.
The Music Boosters has established annual music scholarships that are awarded to students in
grades 5-12 each spring. The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage and reward student
involvement, development and dedication to the performing arts in the areas of band, chorus, and
orchestra.
Boosters have purchased much needed equipment not included in the school budget such as the
acoustic shells in both the high school and middle school auditoriums. Monies raised have also provided
financial assistance to students for competition trips.
Music Boosters also funds special projects and events. Most recently, the organization has
sponsored programs by the New York Philharmonic Brass Quintet, the Western Michigan Jazz Quartet,
Barrage, the Potsdam Brass Quintet, the West Point Clarinet Quintet and many others, which were
enthusiastically received by Monroe-Woodbury students and teachers alike!
The Monroe-Woodbury Music Staff applauds the Music Boosters for their tireless effort,
contribution and dedication to the music department and to the Souza Scholarship Committee for their
commitment to the arts!
Robert W. Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts, Inc.
Bob Curtis, Chairman Janet Gorgone, Secretary Ronnee MacDonald, Treasurer
Committee Members:
Sharon Belnick, Lauren Buono, Maureen Burt, Michele George, Peter Giorgio, Laura Kling,
John MacDonald, Nicole Regan, Al Snider, Sally Stanton, and Erich Tusch
Robert W. Souza came to Monroe-Woodbury Middle School in 1966 as an instrumental music
teacher. With his rare blend of personality, warmth, and unwavering dedication to his students and his
vocation, Bob was known among faculty and friends as a “teacher’s teacher.” His untimely passing in
1980 prompted the creation of the Souza Scholarship Fund in memory of this very special man.
Since its inception in 1980, the scholarship fund has awarded nearly $300,000 to deserving
students from this district in grades seven through twelve. Its fundraising activities, in addition to this
faculty concert event, include theatrical presentations, such as the 2005 production of “Seussical,” 2006’s
“Mr. Dickens Reads A Christmas Carol “, the recent summer productions of “Godspell,” “Brigadoon,”
and Secret Garden,” and previous presentations of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and
“The Wizard of Oz,” among many others. And we hope to mount another Souza show this summer -- stay
tuned!
Scholarship awards are based on other-centered service to school and community and a
demonstrated interest in the performing arts. In a small way, these scholarships serve as a living reminder
of a man who unselfishly gave so much to the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District community.

Did you know?
Research shows when a child listens to classical
music the right hemisphere of the brain is
activated, BUT when a child studies a musical
instrument both left and right hemispheres of
the brain light up. Significantly, the areas that
become activated are the same areas that are
involved in analytical and mathematical
thinking.
~Dee Dickinson, Music and the Mind, New Horizons
for Learning 1993

“...go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life
more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in
the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly
can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”
― Kurt Vonnegut

The end result is clear: students who take part
in music education are more likely to succeed
in school, and throughout their careers, because
music is a much-needed curriculum that
establishes the pattern of learning for life.
