Introduction to Psychology<br />

(Level I Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

How do people learn? What is memory and why do we<br />

forget? How do brain processes affect my behaviour and<br />

even my moods? These and many more questions will be<br />

addressed in Introduction to Psychology. This course is<br />

compulsory for all Social Science students and will provide<br />

you with a strong basis in psychological concepts, theories<br />

and research methods. Equipped with this knowledge, you<br />

will be able to pursue further studies in Psychology.<br />

Lifespan Development<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

This course will explore the changes and challenges across<br />

the stages of development of the human life span. We will<br />

begin with prenatal development and continue through<br />

infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and death and<br />

dying. Specific issues surrounding psychological<br />

development, including the impact of heredity and<br />

environment and the role of the family will be addressed.<br />

Psychology of Sexual Behaviour<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

There are many myths and prejudices surrounding sexual<br />

behaviour. The goal of this course is to provide, in place of<br />

these, an understanding of sexual behaviour that is both<br />

flexible and scientifically based. This will involve an<br />

examination of the following topics: Psycho-physiological<br />

and socio-cultural factors in sexual behaviour, psychosexual<br />

development, varieties of sexual orientations, psychological<br />

aspects of marriage, family life, and parenthood,<br />

contraception and abortion, venereal diseases, and failures<br />

in sexual response.<br />

Social Psychology<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

As one branch of the larger discipline of Psychology,<br />

Social Psychology seeks to understand and clarify the<br />

influence and power that the group and individuals have<br />

over us. This course will, in effect, look at how what is<br />

going on outside of you affects what is going on inside of<br />

you.<br />

Psychology of Human Relations<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

This course is designed to help you identify, understand<br />

and analyze the factors that influence your relations with<br />

others. The basic idea of this course is that this<br />

understanding will lead to clear communication. Class<br />

exercises will focus on self-observation, on awareness of<br />

communication styles and on strategies to improve<br />

human relations.<br />

Psychology of Mental Health<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

This course is designed to examine the relativity of the<br />

mental health - mental illness continuum. The historical<br />

roots and myths of mental health will be studied, and<br />

special treatment will be given to interventions used by<br />

psychologists to deal with the wide range of mental<br />

health issues. Topics discussed will focus on personality<br />

theories, stress and stress management, psychological<br />

disorders, psychotherapy and treatment, and the<br />

psychological aspects of physical health.<br />

Psychology of Learning<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

This course will allow you to explore how learning occurs<br />

as well as some of the unique social, cultural and<br />

psychological factors in the student that affect learning.<br />

You will analyze different theories of learning, gain<br />

insight into your own process of learning, and apply<br />

principles of effective learning to concrete situations.<br />

Child and Adolescent Development<br />

(Level II Psychology for Social Science students only)<br />

This course will study children and adolescents by<br />

exploring their physical, cognitive, social and emotional<br />

development. These changes will be analyzed within the<br />

contexts of family, peer groups and school. Since this is a<br />

required course in the Education Option, particular<br />

attention will be placed on the factors that influence<br />

adjustment within the school setting.<br />
