History of Sport<br />

(History for Sport Marketing students only)<br />

This course will take the evolution of the ideas and<br />

practices of sport from Prehistoric times to our own<br />

contemporary era. It will focus on the “Age of Progress”<br />

(1860-1914) and the extraordinary leap forward in<br />

leisure and affluence that lead to the regularization of<br />

rules and codes. During our own Global Age, aspects of<br />

professionalism, the growth of expectations and<br />

motivation will supplement views on sportsmanship,<br />

fitness and recreation.<br />

Western Civilization<br />

(Level I History for Social Science students only)<br />

This course is an introductory survey of the main<br />

developments in the West from Paleolithic times to the<br />

present. Beginning with the momentous Neolithic<br />

Revolution, it traces the origins of Civilization through<br />

the River Valleys and its expansion during the great<br />

Mediterranean era of Greece and Rome. The Middle<br />

Ages are examined, leading to the Renaissance and the<br />

Age of Exploration and Discovery. European State<br />

building during the Enlightenment lead up to the<br />

enormous changes brought about by the Industrial and<br />

Political Revolutions, whose ripple effects on Science and<br />

Technology, Liberalism, Socialism, Nationalism and<br />

Imperialism have worked themselves through the<br />

tremendous upheavals of this century.<br />
