Nursing<br />

Fundamentals of Nursing<br />
This course is delivered in the first semester of the<br />
program and provides the nursing student with an<br />
overview of nursing, including the role and<br />
responsibilities of the nurse from a professional, ethical<br />
and legal perspective. The student is introduced to<br />
fundamental nursing concepts, basic skills and the care<br />
context. The student will focus on caring for the older<br />
aged patient in long term care settings.<br />

Fundamentals of Nursing II:<br />
This course is delivered in the second semester and<br />
builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in<br />
Fundamentals of Nursing I. The main focus of the course<br />
is on the care of the adult patient and family with<br />
frequently encountered medical-surgical health care<br />
needs.<br />

Pharmacotherapy:<br />
This course is delivered in the second semester<br />
concomitantly with the Fundamentals of Nursing II<br />
course. It provides the student with basic knowledge and<br />
skills in pharmacotherapy and complements the<br />
pharmacotherapy component of Fundamentals.<br />

Mental Health Challenges; Care of the Aging Client:<br />
This course is delivered in the 3rd or 4th semester. It<br />
builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in the<br />
Fundamentals of Nursing II and Pharmacotherapy<br />
courses, as well as the courses in Lifespan Development<br />
and Sociology of Families. It is focused on the care of<br />
elderly clients in acute-complex care and geriatric-long<br />
term care settings, and on adults with mental health<br />
problems in acute care centres.<br />

Care of the Childbearing and Childrearing Family:<br />
This course is delivered in the 3rd or 4th semester. It is<br />
focused on the nursing care of the childbearing and<br />
childrearing family and addresses the major phases of<br />
human development from conception through infancy,<br />
early childhood and adolescence. The course builds on<br />
the knowledge and skills acquired in the Fundamentals of<br />
Nursing II and Pharmacotherapy courses, as well as the<br />
courses in Lifespan Development and Sociology of<br />
Families.<br />

Care of Persons with Complex Health Problems:<br />
This course is delivered in the 5th semester and is<br />
focused on care of adults with complex health problems<br />
and multisystem disorders of a medical nature, and<br />
adults undergoing major surgical interventions in<br />
ambulatory and in-house settings. The course builds on<br />
the knowledge and skills acquired in preceding nursing<br />
courses and courses in the physical and social sciences.<br />

Nursing Integration:<br />
This course gives the student an opportunity to integrate<br />
knowledge and skills learned in the courses of the<br />
previous five semesters and demonstrate achievement of<br />
the competencies of the nursing program (see <strong>Course</strong><br />
Plan in Annex VIII). This course prepares the student for<br />
the end-of-program comprehensive assessment that is<br />
conducted upon completion of the course.<br />
