Fitness & Wellness (Zumba)<br />

Ditch the workout, join the party! This high intensity<br />

workout includes dance moves and the latest music. We<br />

will dance to all the latest songs, utilizing different styles<br />

of dance such as latin, hip hop, bollywood. You will<br />

sweat, have fun and shake shake shake!<br />

Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding - Intensive<br />

Downhill skiing and snowboarding; open to all skill<br />

levels from beginner to advanced. The course takes place<br />

during the winter break in early January. Students<br />

will improve their skills through student centred teaching<br />

and increase their knowledge base by becoming familiar<br />

with the Canadian Technical Approach to skiing and<br />

boarding. This course is a three-day overnight trip to the<br />

Mont Blanc and Tremblant ski areas. There is an<br />

obligatory transportation, ski-lift ticket, and<br />

group instruction fee associated with this course which<br />

includes meals and lodging. Ski or board rental is extra.<br />

Group Fitness<br />

This course is designed to offer the student an<br />

opportunity, in a group setting, to learn sequences of hi<br />

and lo impact aerobic routines, cardio-box to music and<br />

the many uses of the step and sequences to work with it;<br />

to explore the options of circuit and interval training and<br />

to learn to work with heart rate and rate of perceived<br />

exertion as a means to reach objectives. Muscle<br />

conditioning and flexibility will also be included.<br />

Weight Training<br />

This course will teach basic exercises using both free<br />

weights and machines. The primary emphasis will be on<br />

using correct technique and improving muscle tone and<br />

strength. Students will do a variety of weight training<br />

programs and will progress at their own rate. Theory<br />

topics include guidelines for beginners, rules of safety,<br />

principles of weight training, the relationship between<br />

the number of repetitions and the weight lifted, and<br />

physiological benefits of weight training.<br />

Ultimate Frisbee<br />

This course is designed to introduce students to the skills<br />

and strategy involved in ultimate Frisbee. An emphasis<br />

will be placed on learning different throws, as well as<br />

offensive (i.e. the stack) and defensive tactics (i.e.,<br />

marking, the force). The underlying principle of ultimate,<br />

the spirit of the Game, will be stressed.<br />

Yoga<br />

The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible;<br />

it also improves the functioning of the respiratory,<br />

circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems. Yoga brings<br />

about emotional stability and clarity of mind, enhancing<br />

the mind-body connection. In this introductory course,<br />

students will experience yoga postures (asanas) and<br />

breathing techniques (pranayama) as well as meditation<br />

and deep relaxation. Students will learn how the practice<br />

of yoga can reduce stress and anxiety, and improve<br />

concentration and focus. Through sequenced exercises<br />

(vinyasas) and movements, the student will come to feel<br />

more balanced, centered, coordinated, flexible and<br />

strong.<br />

Badminton<br />

The objective is to introduce the basic skills and strategy of<br />

recreational badminton. The following skills and theory will<br />

be covered: grip, services, forehand and backhand<br />

underhand shots, overhead clear, smash and drop, net play,<br />

rules, scoring and tactics for singles and doubles play, and<br />

the purchasing and maintenance of equipment.<br />

Basketball<br />

This course is designed to develop and improve various<br />

technical, tactical, physical and psychological skills<br />

enabling the student to enjoy the game on a recreational<br />

or competitive basis. FIBA rules, regulations and<br />

organization of basketball will also be covered.<br />
