contribution of the nursing profession to health-related<br />

initiatives.<br />

7.6 The graduate nurse co-operates with members of the<br />

health care team to ensure that patients constantly receive<br />

quality care.<br />

7.7 In the context of professional practice, the graduate<br />

nurse:<br />

• helps to train nurse externs;<br />

• shares expertise and makes constructive comments to<br />

nursing colleagues;<br />

• is proud of the nursing profession.<br />

7.8 The graduate nurse is well informed about:<br />

• the functioning of the health care system;<br />

• the major problems affecting changes in the health and<br />

welfare policies;<br />

• the social situations affecting the health system (e.g.,<br />

shortage of resources, aging population);<br />

• the progress of the discipline of nursing.<br />

7.9 Together with members of the interdisciplinary team<br />

and the administrative leadership team, the graduate nurse<br />

participates in promoting legislative and social measures to<br />

improve health and social services (representatives to<br />

amend or adopt health policies, draft bills, regulations, etc.)<br />

7.10 The graduate nurse acts responsibly by:<br />

• making sure that he/she has the necessary competencies<br />

before intervening in a clinical situation;<br />

• using human, material and financial resources wisely;<br />

• taking into account his/her own health-related rights and<br />

obligations.<br />

7.11 The graduate nurse is responsible, at all times, for the<br />

care and treatment of patients in his/her care.<br />

Comprehensive Assessment<br />

A comprehensive assessment is conducted at the end of the<br />

6th semester and is attached to the Nursing Integration<br />

course. A major component of this evaluative phase<br />

includes successful performance by the student on a series<br />

of complex clinical case scenarios; reflecting attainment of<br />

the ministerial competencies and the elements of practice<br />

of the seven aspects of nursing practice of the Ordre des<br />

infirmières et infirmiers (OIIQ). These elements of practice<br />

are described in detail in the Exit Profile.<br />

Entrance Requirement<br />

In order to be admitted to a program leading to a Diploma<br />

of <strong>College</strong> Studies (DEC), candidates must possess a Quebec<br />

Secondary School Diploma including Math CST 4 or have<br />

completed a level of education deemed equivalent by the<br />

college. Nursing applicant must also have the following<br />

courses:<br />

Science 558-404 or 402<br />

Chemistry 551-504<br />

or<br />

Physical Science 436 (416 and 430)<br />

Chemistry 534<br />

or<br />

Physical Science 982-003-50<br />

Chemistry 202-001-50<br />

Math 436 or Math TS 4 or SN 4 is highly recommended<br />

Applicants must have a working knowledge of French.<br />

(In order to become a practicing nurse, graduates must pass<br />

the Order of Nurses of Quebec (OIIQ) licensing examination.<br />

In occordance with the Office québécois de la langue<br />

française (OQLF), each member of a professional order must<br />

possess a working knowledge of French.)<br />

Applicants must submit a letter of Intent.<br />
