Tourism Management (414.A3) - Tourism Program (414.A0)<br />

Entrance Requirement<br />

In order to be admitted to a program leading to a Diploma<br />

of <strong>College</strong> Studies (DEC), candidates must possess a<br />

Secondary School Diploma or have completed a level of<br />

education that is deemed equivalent by the <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Student should have completed Math CST 4. Additional<br />

admissions requirements can be found in the admissions<br />

section of this calendar.<br />

General Program Goal<br />

The Tourism Management program will prepare students to<br />

the level of competency required for entry into the Tourism<br />

Industry. Through practical application of program content,<br />

it equips students for their integration into professional life.<br />

Throughout the six semesters of specialized study, it fosters<br />

the acquisition, development and personalization of the<br />

knowledge required of students as future professionals in<br />

the Industry. Ultimately, students are trained to apply<br />

knowledge and skills acquired in the program into the<br />

various and successive employment areas in which they will<br />

work. The specialization at <strong>Champlain</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Saint</strong>-<br />

<strong>Lambert</strong> focuses on the development and promotion of<br />

travel products.<br />

Graduate Profile<br />

Students who complete the D.E.C. in Tourism Management<br />

will have received a comprehensive education providing<br />

them with a wide choice of employment opportunities. At<br />

<strong>Champlain</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Lambert</strong>, student preparation will<br />

focus on the areas directly related to the development and<br />

promotion of travel products. Therefore, students will<br />

acquire the following knowledge and skills:<br />

Develop the ability to transfer the following skills into<br />

their work environment:<br />

• communication skills in French, English and a working<br />

knowledge of a third language<br />

• group interaction<br />

• critical thinking<br />

• stress management<br />

• time management<br />

• information retrieval (research skills)<br />

Perform efficiently in a business environment through:<br />

• knowledge of business practices<br />

• interpersonal skills<br />

• mastery of problem solving<br />

• ability to apply the basic principles of Sales, Marketing<br />

and Promotion<br />

• ability to use modern technology<br />

Develop and integrate a personal code of ethics.<br />

Apply an extensive knowledge of world tourist<br />

destinations.<br />

Have a practical knowledge of the structure and operation<br />

of the following sectors of the Tourism Industry:<br />

• Accommodation<br />

• Adventure Tourism and Recreation<br />

• Attractions<br />

• Events and Conventions<br />

• Tourism Services<br />

• Transportation<br />

• Travel Trade<br />

Comprehensive Assessment<br />

All Tourism graduates are required to complete a<br />

Comprehensive Assessment process prior to graduation.<br />

This will allow students to demonstrate the personal and<br />

professional skills they have developed during their six<br />

semesters in the Tourism Management program at<br />

<strong>Champlain</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Lambert</strong>. It reflects the attainment<br />

of the competencies outlined in the Graduate Profile. This<br />

Comprehensive Assessment will consist of the total<br />

evaluation of the following three basic components:<br />

• Tourism Showcase Portfolio<br />

• Work-study (an 8-week in-industry work study<br />

experience)<br />

• Exit Interview<br />

Additional activities designed to recognize the<br />

achievements of Tourism Management students<br />

Students will have the opportunity to participate in valueadded<br />

activities that may lead to industry certifications<br />

and/or experience. The nature of these activities may vary<br />

from year to year, but will include opportunities such as:<br />

The Certificate of Recognition for Tourism Work Experience<br />

Tourism students will be encouraged to work in the tourism<br />

industry during their two summer holidays. A set of specific<br />

guidelines and criteria for determining the type of work and<br />

other conditions to be met will be provided to all students<br />

in their first year. A committee of the faculty will evaluate<br />

the work activity of each student to determine each<br />

person’s eligibility for the certificate.
