Liberal Arts Program (700.B0)<br />
The ability to understand and evaluate important ideas in<br />
Western religious, philosophical and scientific thought,<br />
and value their character and influence in Western and<br />
other societies. Students will be able to:<br />
• Make connections between important ideas in Western<br />
thought.<br />
• Analyze the significance of religious, philosophical and<br />
scientific thought within any given historical period.<br />
• Develop an awareness of the importance of<br />
mathematics to Western thought<br />
• Assess the contribution of religious, philosophical and<br />
scientific thought to its own period and to subsequent<br />
eras.<br />
• Approach ideas deductively and inductively<br />
• Synthesize the details in order to make a judgment<br />
about the impact of the respective ideas upon the<br />
specific period in which they appeared as well as upon<br />
subsequent periods.<br />
• Develop critical thinking skills<br />
• Assimilate and present ideas logically<br />
The ability to communicate clearly and coherently in both<br />
written and spoken English. Students will be able to:<br />
• Determine a focus for communicating<br />
• Choose ideas relevant to the topic<br />
• Structure the ideas around a main idea or thesis<br />
• Present the ideas in a logical order<br />
• Use terminology appropriate to the topic and the<br />
discipline<br />
• Use an acceptable academic tone<br />
The ability to demonstrate analytical and knowledgebuilding<br />
skills, and apply these skills in creatively solving<br />
problems. Students will be able to:<br />
• Pose pertinent questions related to a task<br />
• Investigate ideas related to a topic using a reasonable<br />
number of sources<br />
• Assess the relevance and limitations of sources by<br />
comparing different views about an issue<br />
• Evaluate details for accuracy<br />
• Synthesize all information in order to make a reasoned<br />
judgement<br />
• Reflect on the significance of ideas and their<br />
contribution to Western civilization, in general, and to<br />
each individual as a member of our society.<br />
The ability to use established bodies of work and<br />
appropriate methods of research specific to various fields<br />
of learning. Students will be able to:<br />
• Follow the processes accepted by the specific discipline<br />
in order to find appropriate information<br />
• Use multiple sources in order to develop an appropriate<br />
understanding of the material<br />
• Record bibliographic information in the form accepted<br />
by the discipline<br />
• Keep accurate reading and research notes<br />
• Organize information logically and efficiently<br />
• Use the format, tone and terminology accepted by the<br />
discipline<br />
• Express results and ideas in clear, accurate terms<br />
The ability to use word processing, e-mail, the Internet<br />
and online research through the library. Students will be<br />
able to:<br />
• Perform elementary tasks using computer software<br />
packages to create a document on the computer<br />
• Use the Internet and e-mail to locate and communicate<br />
information as well as to send files<br />
• Apply general technology skills to become<br />
knowledgeable about legal and ethical aspects of<br />
information issues<br />
• Search online databases, and use technology to support<br />
written and oral presentations<br />
• Demonstrate respect for careful adherence to ethical<br />
standards such as intellectual integrity and academic<br />
research work<br />
The ability to demonstrate awareness of the importance<br />
of the skills necessary to deal with academic and life<br />
challenges. Students will be able to:<br />
• Cope with a variety of life’s challenges, to support the<br />
development of a well-balanced lifestyle and to<br />
