This course is designed to introduce students to some of<br />
the most important works of theatre through a study of<br />
critical theory and representative works. Studied plays<br />

The Western<br />

This course studies the conventions of Western novels<br />
and/or stories by representative authors. Issues to be<br />
explored may include the captivity narrative, the conflict<br />
between whitemen and redmen, the pioneer experience,<br />
law and order, justice, and the role of the cowboy.<br />

English for Tutors<br />
This course is both an English course and a tutoring<br />
course. Students will study literature and work as writing<br />
tutors in the Writing Center. By the end of the term<br />
students will have written a 1000 word literary analysis<br />
essay. This course requires a serious commitment from<br />
the student as it requires good leadership abilities in<br />
addition to a strong background in English. Students will<br />
be recommended to the course by their English teacher.<br />
Those eligible will receive a letter inviting them to apply<br />
for the course.<br />
NOTE: This course will fulfill either the student's 603-102<br />
or 603-103 diploma requirement.<br />

Through the study of various genres of literature--the short<br />
story, the play, the novel, the poem, and/or the essay--this<br />
course will help students understand how meaning is<br />
influenced by different forms.<br />

The Essay: Ideas on Trial<br />
(Literary Genre)<br />
This course emphasizes the diversity and liveliness of the<br />
essay genre by examining its various structural patterns.<br />
Though studying essays will help students improve their<br />
ability to plan and write essays that present convincing<br />
arguments and that are logically organized and clear in<br />
expression, students should be aware that this is not a<br />
remedial essay writing course.<br />

This course examines various literary genres and the<br />
musical forms to which they have been adapted.<br />
Students may study the differences between a musical<br />
play or a musical comedy and its literary model, and may<br />

music is required.<br />

This course focuses on establishing the components of<br />
the Gothic genre, from the haunted setting, to the<br />
villainous hero, to the related romantic yet deadly<br />
entanglements. A series of historical and critical<br />
approaches may be introduced to unravel the mystery of<br />
the Gothic text.<br />
