Drawing<br />

The first step in learning to draw is learning to see and<br />

translate. Working primarily from observation students will<br />

learn a variety of visual skills and approaches to drawing.<br />

There will be experimentation with such things as color,<br />

perspective systems, and the description of light. The<br />

concepts of illusion, abstraction, and realism will be applied<br />

and reinforced. Finally, students will learn about critical<br />

language used to discuss the formal aspects of artwork in<br />

relation to meaning.<br />

Painting<br />

(Concentration course for students in Creative Arts -<br />

Digital Imaging/Studio Arts profile only)<br />

During this course students will be exposed to painting as a<br />

means of exploring and understanding the external and<br />

internal worlds. They will learn how colour, composition and<br />

imagery can be made expressive of ideas and feelings.<br />

Through critical process, they will develop a language to<br />

discuss formal aspects of painting in relation to meaning.<br />

Sculpture<br />

(Concentration course for students in Creative Arts -<br />

Digital Imaging/Studio Arts profile only)<br />

Sculpture is a discipline where space, volume and content<br />

can be approached in a variety of ways. Building on the<br />

experiences of the second semester courses, students will<br />

develop a practical understanding of sculpture as a<br />

contemporary practice in art. Students will learn about<br />

concepts and techniques in sculpture which they will be<br />

able to apply to the 3D Computer and Advanced Studio<br />

courses in their fourth semester. They will also further<br />

develop critical language by analyzing and critiquing their<br />

own process and production in written form.<br />

3D Computer Imaging<br />

(Concentration course for students in Creative Arts -<br />

Digital Imaging/Studio Arts profile only)<br />

Alias/Wavefront Maya is a recognized 3D modeling<br />

animation tool in the film industry. This course will be an<br />

introduction to the ways in which Maya can be used to<br />

create objects and scenes. Students will complete a<br />

series of class activities that will be geared towards<br />

making the student familiar with this digital sculptural<br />

environment. Students will learn to create objects in<br />

nurbs and polygons, they will also be introduced to<br />

animating. They will develop a personal project,<br />

integrating notions acquired in the Digital Imaging and<br />

Studio Arts profile. Students will be graded on their<br />

mastery of technical skills and their creativity at finding<br />

solutions to 2D and3D design projects.<br />

Advanced Workshop: Studio Arts<br />

(Concentration course for students in Creative Arts -<br />

Digital Imaging/Studio Arts profile only)<br />

In this advanced course, students will be asked to produce a<br />

personal body of work in response to thematic parameters<br />

established by the instructor. The themes introduced will<br />

attempt to address issues pertinent to contemporary art as<br />

a fluctuating entity in the post modern era. Materials and<br />

techniques will be dictated by the students’ interpretation<br />

of the theme, and should not be limited to those previously<br />

learned. The student will be required to do readings to aid<br />

in situating their interpretations in relation to current art<br />

discourse.<br />

3 hours/week Units: 2.00<br />

Prerequisite: {510-204 and 510-205 and 510-301} or<br />

with written permission from instructor (any<br />

prerequisite failed may be taken concurrently with 510-<br />

401)
