Practicum 1: System development<br />

(Concentration course for Computer Science students<br />

only)<br />

The practicum 1 sets up a typical environment for the<br />

development of a detailed proposal for a softwarebusiness,<br />

multimedia or web related real life system<br />

project. The instructor will assist each group of student in<br />

choosing an appropriate project topic and in refining the<br />

proposal through all stages from initial outline to final<br />

formal design specification. The completed proposal will<br />

serve as the blue print of the project to be implemented<br />

in the Practicum 2 – System implementation. The course<br />

involves scheduled milestones, periodic meetings, group<br />

discussions, and walkthrough sessions. The practicum is<br />

graded on theory on systems principles and usage of<br />

CASE tools and a project document encompassing the<br />

milestones completed during the course.<br />

Work Study: Career Planning<br />

(Concentration course for Computer Science students<br />

only)<br />

The course is designed to provide a strong finish to your<br />

college career, while introducing you to opportunities in<br />

a variety of business environments that depend on<br />

information technology in their daily activities. The<br />

understanding of industry trends in those businesses and<br />

developing verbal, written and visual communication<br />

techniques applied to professional situations, including<br />

professional development and career planning are<br />

covered.<br />

Prerequisite: 350-921 and successful completion of all<br />

420 program courses from semester 1 through 4<br />

Scripting Languages<br />

(Concentration course for Computer Science students<br />

only)<br />

In this course students will learn advanced JavaScript and<br />

AJAX and how to use them to suit their training and<br />

creative goals. Students will learn how to use the HTTP<br />

request object to communicate with both XML<br />

documents and scripts. They will learn the importance of<br />

validating forms before storing data and how to search<br />

for the data using both full and partial search strings. In<br />

addition, students will learn about APIs and how to use<br />

cookies to store and recall information.<br />

From beginning to end participants will learn by doing<br />

their own JavaScript-based using AJAX and then handing<br />

them in for instructor feedback. These will result in an<br />

impressive final application which will add to the<br />

student’s portfolio and will contribute to certificate<br />

completion.<br />

Work Study I: Externship<br />

(Concentration course for Computer Science students<br />

only)<br />

This twelve week work study experience provides the<br />

student with the knowledge and skills acquired within a<br />

real‐world situation, and to become familiar with one<br />

company’s approach to the IT industry. Students will gain<br />

invaluable work experience and hone their<br />

communication, time management, planning and group<br />

interaction skills.<br />

Successful completion of all 420 program<br />

courses from semester 1 through 5 with the only<br />

exception being 1 general education course in<br />

either English, Humanities, French,<br />

Complementary or Physical Education and not a<br />

block-B in English, Humanities or French.<br />
