Career Planning<br />

students only)<br />
This course provides students with the necessary job and<br />
career management tools they need to reach their full<br />
career potential. Self-assessment exercises, company<br />
research, networking, job search strategies, letters of<br />
application, resumes, interviews, and follow-up<br />
techniques will ensure students have the knowledge, the<br />
skills and the strengths to begin their professional career.<br />
Methodology: lectures, research of the workforce and<br />
employment agencies using the Internet, interviews<br />
including both information interviews and videotaped TV<br />
studio interviews conducted with professionals in the<br />
field.<br />
3 hours/week Units: 2.33<br />
Prerequisite: Successful completion of all courses from<br />
semester one to semester four with the only exception<br />
being two core courses.<br />

Business Centre II<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
Students will continue to work with clients to apply<br />
graphic design, marketing and management techniques<br />
while operating and staffing the Business Centre. Design<br />
teams will be responsible to bring several client projects<br />
to completion over the course of this semester.<br />
Methodology: Hands on experience in operating a small<br />
graphic design business, assistance from design experts<br />
and guest speakers, as well as extensive experience in<br />
working with Mac and PC platforms will give students the<br />
tools and know-how to get started in the graphics design<br />
industry.<br />

Corporate Design<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
Branding is the art of creating widespread recognition for<br />
a company’s products and services. In this project-based<br />
course, students will learn the fundamentals of effective<br />
brand design for print media and the Internet. Topics<br />
include: the history of corporate identities, an overview<br />
of the brand design process and the challenges of<br />
changing corporate identities. Working in teams students<br />
will plan and design various corporate documents and<br />
build online branding tools using Photoshop, Illustrator,<br />
Dreamweaver, and InDesign. Projects will involve<br />
research and sketches while communication skills will be<br />
evaluated through written rationale and oral<br />
presentations.<br />
Methodology: Web research, lectures, practical<br />
applications and theory tests.<br />

412-613-LA<br />
Multimedia and Print Portfolio<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
Students will design and produce a portfolio that will<br />
demonstrate their professional expertise, technical skills<br />
and creativity by showcasing selected works. This course<br />
provides students the opportunity to use all the skills<br />
learned in the Graphic Communications program by<br />
producing both print and multimedia portfolios.<br />
Methodology: Guest speakers and creative projects.<br />

semester one to semester five with the only exception<br />

412-614-LA<br />
Graphic Communications Externship<br />
(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />
students only)<br />
This externship gives students the opportunity to apply<br />
their skills and knowledge in a professional environment.<br />
Students will actively participate in the job placement<br />
process and work with the instructor to find employment<br />
for an eight-week stage in the graphic communication<br />
field.<br />
Methodology: experiential learning through on-the-job<br />
training and employer evaluation, project management<br />
and, written experiential report.<br />
Class: 1 hour/week (Total 180 externship)<br />
Lab: 17 hours/week Units: 4.33<br />
Prerequisite: Successful completion of all courses from<br />
semester one to semester five with the only exception<br />
