Page Layout II: Advanced Adobe InDesign<br />

This course builds on the skills learned in Page Layout I<br />

and is designed to teach students advanced page layout<br />

techniques using Adobe InDesign. Classes focus on the<br />

development of effective page layout and design<br />

techniques through hands-on exercises and creative<br />

design analysis. Topics include: working with long<br />

documents such as booklets, catalogues, manuals and<br />

annual reports. Students will produce press-ready files.<br />

Methodology: Multimedia presentations, hands-on<br />

computer tutorials, theory and practical tests and design<br />

projects.<br />

Animated Graphics II: ActionScript<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

ActionScript is the programming language that<br />

empowers Flash and helps designers create highly<br />

interactive multimedia web sites, games, educational<br />

tools and more. Students will learn and apply<br />

ActionScript to develop interactive Flash projects and will<br />

produce a multimedia portfolio showcasing the body of<br />

work they have produced in the Graphic<br />

Communications program.<br />

Methodology: on-screen computer demonstrations,<br />

hands-on exercises, creative projects and tests.<br />

Business Centre I<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

In this course, students will learn how to establish and<br />

organize a graphic communication business. They will<br />

work with clients to apply design, marketing and<br />

management techniques while operating and staffing the<br />

Business Centre. Emphasis will be placed throughout the<br />

course on pricing client projects, organizing personnel<br />

resources, as well as on managing the finances of the<br />

business.<br />

Methodology: Multimedia lectures, case studies, videos,<br />

creative projects including sketching, team projects,<br />

theory tests and hands-on experience in running the<br />

Graphic Communications Business Centre.<br />

Magazine Publishing<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

This project-based course provides first-hand experience<br />

in producing multi-page print documents. As members of<br />

a creative team, Graphic Communications students will<br />

develop skills as decision-makers, media writers, editors,<br />

designers, page composers and pre-press specialists.<br />

Students will also develop their typography and layout<br />

skills by producing a newspaper, a print magazine as well<br />

as a Web-based version (E-Zine). Projects will involve<br />

research and sketches while communication skills will be<br />

evaluated through written rationale and oral<br />

presentations.<br />

Methodology: Multimedia lectures, journalistic writing<br />

assignments, guest speakers, team work and real life<br />

exposure to the importance of meeting deadlines.<br />

Prepress<br />

(Concentration course for Graphic Communications<br />

students only)<br />

Students will be introduced to the preparation required<br />

to output professionally printed files on both Macintosh<br />

and Windows platforms. The following topics will be<br />

covered: the production process, technical constraints<br />

and how to accurately prepare images and files with<br />

respect to anticipated methods of production for the<br />

service bureaus and print shops. Several team projects<br />

will integrate research, sketch, design and technical skills.<br />

Methodology: Demonstrations, lectures, practical<br />

applications, critique sessions, theory tests, and guest<br />

lecturers or site visits.<br />
